Some Doctors Boo President For Stance On Malpractice Awards

Obama Pushes Health System Overhaul
By CHARLES BABINGTON,
AP

CHICAGO (June 15) -- President Barack Obama bluntly told doctors Monday he is against their highest legislative priority — limiting malpractice awards — and earned a smattering of boos from an audience he was here to court for his health care overhaul plans.

Pushing anew to reshape the nation's health care delivery system and extend coverage to the millions who don't have it, Obama went before the annual meeting of the American Medical Association and took on others who take issue with parts of his plan as well.

  1. Let's not forget the cost to the taxpayer for this little speech was $236,000, not including Secret Service, motorcade or helicopter.

Why can't our president stop wasting money. He could have easily given speech from White House. Or do us a favor and stop reading the teleprompter and actually DO SOMETHING for a change.

  2. I didn't vote for the guy (voted for Bob Barr), but I agree that you cannot limit malpractice awards. Many med mal cases exceed the proposed 250K limit. Only 250K for the care and lifetime treatment of a baby who is now retarded because a doctor negligently used a vacuum to suction the baby out? I don't think so. Especially, when you consider a jury decides the verdict, not a bunch of trial lawyers.

I don't agree with him on much that he does and says, but he's on the mark in this instance.

Don't weep for those downtrodden MD's!

  5. don't weep until u need an MD and there won't be any or of such inferior quality.. u might as well go to Cuba... that's where there is Medical Mecca according to the left.. FREE care for everyone...

i will never understand why people say they hate MD's so much.. it truly puzzles me

The ones with all the hate are most likely the dumbest trash out there with zero education and class... but i digress

get a life and hate someone else for a change

  7. i didnt vote for him and have listened to many of his speeches and hardly ever agree with him but this time i agree with 98% of what he had to say. It was a costly speech that part i dont agree with but the speech was his best yet, lets see if he follows through.

  9. When you really watch what Obama does, it becomes clear that he is ONLY interested in protecting the special interest groups that put him in office.
Use tax money to bankrupt GM but protect the unions.
Trash the healthcare system in this country, but protect the scumbag slip and fall lawyers who have been driving up costs.
Just watch the teleprompter reader and chief in action, he's a corporation to protect special interest group in action.

  11. I do not want a government run health care system. Anything the government gets involved in they they screw up. (An example is the Housing Market) No one can deny that.

If they were to limit malpractice awards you would lower health care insurance. Many doctors will send a patience to many test they don't need just to make sure they won't get sued. This is expensive. However, sometimes I don't think this should apply in some cases such as operating on the wrong leg. When are people going to realize doctors are not god.

  12. I feel for the good doctors who suffer because of quacks, or people who blame doctors for not being God.

But as someone else said, $250,000 is absurd when faced with the kind of case malpractice is supposed to be about.

Perhaps there's another way, but that's not it. Obama is right.

  13. Isn't Obama a lawyer? I doubt he'll do anything that would hurt his own kind.

  14. What? Rich people dont agree with Obama? Your days of preying off the weak or less fortunate are over... So boo to you. Boo Hoo, deal with it.

  15. The limits on malpratice awards apply to pain and suffering, not to actual medical care costs for someone hurt by actual negligence. This will hopefully keep people from filing frivolous suits in the hopes that doctors and their insurers would settle out of court. Obama is not right, insurance is driving up the cost of healthcare, if you rein this in along with the rising cost of pharmaceuticals more people will be able to afford health care and we won't need his plan of rationed health care.

  16. 7:35,
The reason the housing market tanked is because the government GOT OUT OF IT! De-regulation allowed banks and mortgage companies to go hog wild. We needed MORE governemnt intervention, not less.

And for those of you complaining about the cost of Obama's speech, you are just being dumb. What would you rather have: taxpayers paying for a president to "clear brush" at his Texas ranch, or pay for a guy to actually do something? Either way, you are paying for transportation, security agents, and all the other associated costs of the presidency. But Bush added his ridiculous and expensive attack on Iraq, a country that had nothing to do with 9/11. Yeah, I really miss that guy.

  17. Play of words always work for con - artist and scams. I wonder why people is not comprehending what was first stated and what is now stated. Change one word and the complete meaning changes. Where are the grammar experts now? I don't see or hear any of them now. Why is evrything so urgent that there are always deadlines or disasters will occur. Another tactic used by scammers and con - artist. Obama's plan removes how many from health insurance plans they now have? OOOPS. The secrets out.

  18. Everyone should pay for medicare as the senior citizens do, through payroll deduction. Then have the option to purchase suplemental insurance, we would eliminate the big insurance companies who get rich off our premiums. The big insurance companies raise our premiums every year, but do not reimburse squat to providers. The big insurance companies do not even reimburse enough to cover the expenses of a visit. That is why a lot of doctors, book many people in a short amount of time to cover cost. Because they know the insurance companies will not reimburse close to the cost of seeing on patient in that time frame. Sorry for the long post. Health insurance companies are greedy SOBs, then they don't want to "authorize" the care you need.

"The reason the housing market tanked is because the government GOT OUT OF IT! De-regulation allowed banks and mortgage companies to go hog wild. We needed MORE government intervention, not less."

WRONG - It started in 1992 (Clinton) when the government intervened in the housing market and forced banks and mortgage companies to lower their underwriting standards to help meet federally mandated affordable housing goals. Basically help people buy homes that they could not afford...

Obama is president because of uniformed voters like this who believe the government is the answer....

  20. Tort reform WOULD reduce health care costs . Obama is not right on his plan. Uninsured people still get treatment NOW, thanks to those of us who pay taxes.Union bosses, Lawyers and Politicians make far more than doctors now a days, when are you going to go after them? Which one will you need to save your life?

I would rather have LESS "Good" doctors than MANY "Bad/Careless" doctors!
In fact, let's get rid of the local doctors who use a Medicare card like an ATM card. Order this test, that test and oh, guess what, nothings wrong with you.
What about all the ones who have had their chest cracked open lately, probably unnecessarily. I know TWO of them!
They NEVER had ANY problems, but a routine test showed "something".
Give me a break! These doctors around here just want to operate because THAT is where the money is!

  23. The AMA? Like they would actually do anything to relieve the patients of any costs. The AMA is the Gestapo of the drug companies. Do you know the also opposed Medicare in the early days, they opposed regulation of drug companies, opposed regulation of HMO's. The AMA are greedy hacks. They are part of the problem with health care costs in this country.

  24. To all you Bush haters...if you think Iraq wasn't involved in terrorism and 9/11 you're out of your dam minds!
The only reason WMD's weren't found was because YOUR liberal news media told the world when we were going in a month before we went in. They had plenty of time to hide everything so thank Dan Rather and the likes of his sorry ass for not finding WMD's. Of course this was their whole agenda because they hated Bush too and did everything possible to pull him down.
Personally, I been around this earth for many a year and the only other president I've seen that loved this country like G.W. does is Ronald Reagan...I'd pick either of them over AntiObamaChrist any day!
And that pic of him is sickening...he truly thinks he is a God! The God that will bankrupt America! The God that has spent more in 5 months than G.W. did in 8 years! So keep running your mouths but when you're living under the railroad bridge just remember you voted for him!

  25. I mistrust his healthcare plan because I have a sneaking suspicion it will do little or nothing to alleviate the high cost of medical insurance for those who are paying for their own.

  26. We need a loser pays system. That would take care of the ridiculous and frivolous lawsuits.

Anyone whow has dealt with either Medicare or Medicaide can tell you that Govt. run health care is the absolute worst.

We hear all the time about the inferior care given to Vets (Govt. run). Social Security - does anyone think that is well run?

One of Britons parliment members has said repeatedly that the worst thing we could do is implement a Govt run system.

Gee Grandma, sorry you need to have your broken leg operated on. You are only going to live another couple of years anyway so we don't want to spend any money on your care.
