BREAKING NEWS! Fatality In Ocean City

A Canada Dry Vehicle struck and killed a bicyclist just moments ago on 33rd Street in Ocean City. Information is still coming in. We have no names and or exactly how this happened or who's at fault. Coastal Highway is closed down heading south bound.

UPDATE: We're told it was a female in her teens. I had also heard from another caller that there is no ID and it could be a foreign student. We're told she rode out onto Coastal Highway, 2 vehicles were able to stop but the large truck could not stop in time.

  2. Recently I went to Ocean City (only because I had to) and I was totally appalled and disturbed with how INSANE the pedestrians are. I feel really sorry for the drivers in these cases. We had so many stupid tourists run in front of our car, not at cross walks and when they saw a "break" in traffic. You wouldn't believe how many of these idiots ran in front of us and other cars pulling their toddlers behind them or pushing their strollers out in front of moving vehicles.

I commented to my husband that I had forgotten how dumb beach tourists and teenage drivers are. Ocean City is a mad house.

Loss of any kind is tragic, but my heart really goes out to the people driving these large trucks and making deliveries at the beach and especially those who will have to live with this for the rest of their lives.

  3. We were in OC hour ago and leaving via Balt. Ave. traveling north from the south end when a guy in his later twenties allowed his young daughter run ahead of him crossing the strewet while he was at least 20 feet behind her. I was glad there was little traffic and they were within 100 feet of a crozss walk. WHAT AN IDIOT!

  4. I might not agree with the work visa at all but this is terrible for everyone involved. Its a dangerous world we live in.

  5. Sorry 3:33 PM, but it's a much less dangerous world when you cross the street when the signal tells you to, instead of trying to bolt across a busy street like Frogger. PWND.

  6. I feel really sorry for the driver of the Canada Dry truck. From the information that has been posted he did nothing wrong yet has to live with this the rest of his life.

  7. of course he was wrong.he was driving on the bus lane which he should not have. and these big trucks drive like crazy on the coastal highway.i feel sorry for the girls' parents.

  8. anonymous 5:29, you don't know that to be a fact. I heard that's just where he stopped. Look where the bicycle is in the road. Looks like it happened in the right hand lane instead.

  9. Joe, It would do the family of this victim much diginity if you would remove the pic from your site. Im not sure if you are aware, but that is the young lady laying in the road just prior to Burbages Funeral Home arriving. You do a great job of updating the public, but the least you can do is take this pic off just in case they find out that this is not a foreign student and from what i have heard, they do not believe it is.

  10. With all due respect, the body, (should it actually be the body) is completely covered. I do not feel it is in bad taste, (respectfully) and it is the scene. If I had another photo I would gladly do so but at this point this is the only photo we have.

  11. People who pull out or walk out in front of big trucks do not realize they can not stop on a dime like the new cars with anti-lock brakes. I am sorry it resulted in another death. The human body is not match for any kind of vehicle.

  12. she was crossing against the traffic signal and there was something said that she was wearing headphones. Two cars stopped, but the truck was unable. He was not high or drunk. Don't assume things like that if you have no information, it's very disrespectful.

  13. I drove a bus for OC for several years. My experience is that foreign students do not understand OUR traffic laws as they pertain to pedestrians and right of way. Most of the bus drivers there learn this and take that extra second to see where a departing (foreign) passenger goes. We have laws here governing who has the right of way and many drivers do not understand that these students assume differently. These tragedies happen simply due to a difference in understanding. It may be that some governing body takes responsibility for educating these visiting kids on our traffic rules. OC isn't doing it so who should?

  14. Respectfully,I agree that the photo should be removed. That is someone's sunshine laying in the street and this should not be exploited.

  15. Do we know any more about this? My grandson works at Jolly Roger and he heard it was a 10 year old girl on a bike!!! Do we know at this time?

  16. what is being exploited, it is news and if one person or thier child sees it and is scared into looking twice next time then what does it hurt. i see it as a way to make one think twice before biking or walking into traffic.
stop trying to make everyone live in a bubble, people die everyday. we should educate our kids visually that they are not invincable. if you dont pay attention in the highway you will pay the price!.

  20. Still no identity of this person as of this morning. OC Police reported that the girl was in a crosswalk but was crossing against a red signal. It was report also that she may have been wearing headphones.

  21. She was a Pennsylvania woman in her late teens or early twenties. She was wearing headphones at the time of the accident and listening to an IPOD. She didn't have any type of ID on her. Her roommate called OCPD last night to file a missing persons report and thats when they put two and two together.

  22. Do not remove the picture. People need to see real life for what it is. Bad things happen because of stupidity. If you can't deal with it don't look at it. But maybe just maybe some kid will see this picture and think twice about darting out into traffic. People really need to stop sheltering everyone and stop trying to save everyone from everything. JUST DEAL WITH IT. Joe do not remove this picture.
