Soldier Subdued By Stun Gun Killed Florida Deputies

By MELISSA NELSON
Associated Press Writer

NICEVILLE, Fla. --

Two deputies from a troubled sheriff's office in Florida had no warning a confrontation with a National Guard soldier accused of beating his wife would turn deadly, the sheriff said.

Deputies Burt Lopez and Warren "Skip" York used a stun gun to subdue Joshua Cartwright, but he was able to start shooting at them from the ground. Both Lopez and York died.

"Within seconds he sat up and began firing a weapon that came out of nowhere, it was somewhere on his body we assume," Okaloosa County's Interim Sheriff Ed Spooner told more than 300 sheriff's office employees who gathered Sunday night to pray and hear an explanation of the shootings.

Cartwright was killed in a shootout at a roadblock after a car chase into a neighboring county. The deputies had gone to a shooting range to arrest him after his wife sought treatment for domestic abuse injures at an area hospital.

Spooner said the deputies had no information to make them think Cartwright would turn his weapons on them.

"This went from zero to 100 in a matter of minutes. In three minutes it turned from a passive discussion to a shooting, it was one heck of a mess," the sheriff said.

He only worked at walmart for 2 days but sold cds as a second job on Baker and anne. he also fathers 8 kids by 7 different females in the salisbury area. 2 of the females worked at walmart as well. during a search of his person, officers recovered a walmart discount card that led to believe that he did in fact wroked at walmart. he was also charged with threft. he failed to return the discount card. he was transported to wcdc for processing.

  4. What this article doesn't mention is that this wingnut has been "distressed" by the election of Barack Obama. Yet another wingnut wound up by the likes of Beck, O'Reilly, Savage, Limbaugh, Hannity, Bortz, Levine, Malkin and the list goes on and on. Wake up, this hate filled rehtoric is not helpful.

  6. OK now I can say it! TASERS?????? didn't someone want to know why some people didn't use tasers during a deadly force situation??? Yea I thought so. Now it has been a few hours since this was posted and still no comment from the person who suggested Tasers. ANYWAY tasers as you can see don't always work, very good tool for the tool box, but you are a tool box if you use the taser against an armed suspect that wants to kill you (not monday morning quarterbacking this situation because I of course was not there) "Zero to 100 in a matter of minutes" huh sound familiar, probably should be zero to 100 in amtter of milliseconds. That is the amount of time a cop has to recognize the threat, determine that it is a legitamate threat, determine what type of force is warranted, determine what is behind the suspect (don't want any innocent people hurt), then decide which weapon to pull from his/her gun belt and then use that weapon accurately and to its' fullest capabailities. And then determine if there are anymore threats. MILLISECONDS!! It is just a sham that another cop had to die for this point to get across, even it got across this time I don't know!

You missed judged me right off the bat because I said they should have tazers. You took that I quess to mean I was something Im not. Ill say it again, I would of shot him dead and tryed not to get any on my shoes. Im not at all what you seem to think I am.

  9. I read 'em, Doug. I was just so shocked that you would suggest tasers at all.

Peace out. We will shake hands one day.

  11. Whoever trained these dead officers should be fired. Respond to a domestic at a shooting range, and you don't search and cuff a known violent man? It cost them their lives, RIP.

Its the police who will pay a continuing price for this rhetoric. It's happened before and it will happen again.

...and people wonder why these guys are on a DHS possible terror list???
