The 6th Annual Pork In The Park Barbeque Festival
Follow Your Nose to the 6th Annual Pork in the Park Barbeque Festival
(Salisbury, MD) Wicomico County Recreation, Parks & Tourism invites you to the 6th Annual Pork in the Park Barbeque Festival April 17th to 19th, 2009. The festival offers a weekend of live music, unique vendors, cold beverages, and mouthwatering BBQ the whole family will enjoy. Pork in the Park will be held at Winterplace Park (6737 Blue Ribbon Road) in Salisbury on Friday from 4pm to 10pm, Saturday from 10am to 10pm, and Sunday 11am to 5pm. Tickets are only $2 per day and children under 12 are free.
Pork in the Park offers three days of great events the whole family will enjoy. Live entertainment will kick off as soon as the festival gates open. This year’s line-up includes the musical entertainment of The Crossroads, Tom Principato and the Crawdaddies among many more. As a new entertainment component to this year’s festival, JJ and Whiskey of the 96 Rock morning show will host the 96 Rock Battle of the Bands. 96 Rock is already accepting submissions from local artists, and the top four will perform in front of the crowd during the 96 Rock Battle of the Band’s debut on Saturday, April 18 at 8:30pm. Entry information can be found at www.96RocksYou.com.
While listening to the sounds of the main stage, guests can peruse the booths of craft vendors selling unique artwork, pottery, jewelry, and much more or indulge in mouth-watering barbeque and other trademark festival food. On Saturday, attendees can witness history in the making as the Red Knights Maryland 3 will end the ‘World’s Largest Poker Run’ at Pork in the Park. This motorcycle ride will benefit the Fallen Fire Fighters Survivors Foundation and be recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records. On Sunday, car enthusiasts can check out the wheels on display during the Car Cruisin’ from 11am to 5pm.
Children and families can enjoy amusement rides and games throughout the weekend. On Saturday, a special children’s area will open. Piglet’s Korner, sponsored by Delmarva Power, offers performances by local dance troupes, martial arts demonstrations and cheerleading demonstrations along with face painting, arts & crafts and a Baby Rest Stop area.
Although it takes place behind the scenes, the focal point of the festival is a barbeque competition sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS). Close to 100 competitors are anticipated for this year, making Pork in the Park the largest barbeque festival east of the Mississippi. The smell of BBQ will have your mouth watering as competitors sizzle, smoke, and slice in hopes that their entry will win a portion of the $18,000 in prize money up for grabs.
Amateur backyard barbeque experts are invited to put their skills to the test during the first amateur Backyard Barbeque on Sunday, April 19. Barbeque enthusiasts can enter in the chicken and/or pork ribs (spares) categories and demonstrate their skills using wood or charcoal cookers. The first place winner will receive a trophy, a one year membership into the Kansas City Barbeque Society and free entry into the KCBS Barbeque Competition at the 2010 Pork in the Park. Download an entry form at www.PorkinthePark.org.

This just gets bigger and better every year! I love riding my bike around and the BBQ is way too good to choose between the competitors. Didn't I read somewhere that this was the brainchild of Urban Salisbury?
ReplyDeleteThis is a really affordable way for the family to have fun. This is what the city needs, more of this. That is if the vendors arent sticking you in the rear with the food cost.
ReplyDeleteI got a meal at one of the vendors that was more than I could eat for about 8 bucks, I recall. My son and I bought at different stands and shared so we could do our own "judging". We should have brought more people with us!
ReplyDelete8 Bucks is reasonable, as long as the flavor is there. I have a hard time eating food others prepare, Im getting crazier because germs are starting to bother me. I am really a stickler for proper food preperation.
ReplyDeleteStay away from them farmen if you go Joe. They're mean and nasty.
ReplyDeleteWe have gone to this event for the last three years.
ReplyDeleteEvery year, I think, maybe this is the year they will actually have BBQ pork vendors!
But noooo. Only TWO. One is not worth the paper plate they put it on and the other has a line which is about an hour long.
I refuse to stand in a line like that.
If you're gonna keep calling it Pork in the Park, then dang it, make the BBQ pork accessible to visitors!
I will not be going this year and wasting my time. I'll cook my own.
What happens to all the pork that is cooked for judging? They should be allowed to sell their product as well as be in the competition.
Get the FLIES off the meat STEWY.
ReplyDeletepork in the park is the only reason i still live in the uninted states.
