Salisbury Fire Department Celebrates Dave Merritt's Retirement

Station 7 in Pittsville was the chosen place to host Dave Merritt's Retirement Party Sunday evening. If you don't know Dave personally, he's one hell of a guy and the SFD has lost one of the finest Firefighters ever to walk through their doors.
Dave was injured two years ago on the old Ladder Truck and was unfortunately forced into early retirement. Dave did a lot of their computer work for the SFD, so it always blew me away as to why they forced him out when he could have simply stayed and continued doing the work he had been doing.
Nevertheless, Station 7 seemed to be the perfect place to hold such a Party and we at Salisbury News wish Dave the very best.

  1. Kara does all our computer stuff (though she's not wonderful, she is effective) for less money. Thats why he was forced to go.

  3. 8:31: I thought that was probably the reason when I read Albero's statement. Many agencies, especially police departments, have civilianized many positions formerly held by sworn officers. Manning the front desk is one such position.

  5. I am not with the fire department, but was honored to attend. I have read and heard alot of what goes on there and yesterday proved its true. All of Daves closest friends were in attendance and enjoying themselves. Over in the corner was Chief See and I believe his date, all by themselves. I only saw one fireman walk up and speak to the Chief during the event. It was painfully obvious that his men didn't care for him and he has no people skills. The Deputy Chiefs did not attend. As I mingled around the room with various groups you heard the same comments evrywhere. They didn't care for him and each had a story to tell about him. Soon after he handed Dave a plaque of appreciation, he departed with his date. The tension lifted off the room like a balloon. Until you have witnessed the dislike for this man, you cannot grasp the depth of the troubles in the SFD. Hopefully new leadership will bring harmony among these fine men and women.

  7. He is lucky that he has a retirement that he can use since he got injured. That is exactly what the Wicomico Sheriff's office wants. Thanks for the service Dave and be thankful you got that retirement.

How is it more affective and with less money? Dave did a great job with basically the same pay.

  9. The comment about the chief's date was out-of-line; don't degrade this lady just because you don't like David See, Mr. Annonymous 11:48

  10. Joe,

This was an "invitatilon only" event. Dave wanted Chief See to be there or he wouldnt have been. He has stated that to me directly.
David and his wife have also spoken directly to me regarding their wishes that this thread NOT turn into a SFD Admin bash fest. I relay that to you as both David and his wife are dear friends of mine and I have no issue discussing this w/ you on their behalf.
I ask that you please refrain from allowing such comments based on the Merritt's request for such.
It's your call, but that is true and you may contact David directly should you question my integrity or intent regarding this post.

    Thanx again...

    JG
