Did you know they charge $1,400.00 a year to park your Boat at their Marina? Did you also know that they keep raising their rates 10% every year?
I happen to have a friend who used to dock his Boat there but after so many problems with Coastal Property Management they chose to say enough is enough. While they owned a $300,000.00 Boat, they had just pre-paid 6 months in advance and signed a contract. During the winter they would periodically stop by to check on things and every time they went onto the Boat they found there was no power. Mind you, this is the winter months and on a Boat you must keep the heat running so things don't freeze up.
After a couple times this happened, they went to the management company and asked what the problem was. Their response was, you're using too much electric. They replied, no I'm not. I'm barely keeping it warm enough to keep things from freezing. The next time they came back, the breaker was cut off again. After enough complaining the management company actually had a meter placed on their breaker box and ultimately came to learn they were NOT using too much electric and in fact according to their contract, they could use as much electric as they wanted anyway.
Their other major issue was fuel. Most of the time the Marina didn't have fuel in the tanks. Remember now, this is a $300,000.00 Boat and when they would fuel up, it was quite a bit of money. They had asked the management company to at least provide a schedule of when they might expect to receive fuel and one was never sent out.
This particular individual slip renter went out and purchased a brand new Boat a few weeks ago and chose to never return to Salisbury because of so many issues. They said to me, where's all their money going? They rarely have fuel. There's no maintain ace done there. They rarely ever see them power washing the docks and theirs pigeon crap everywhere. But he kept saying, where's their money going? They usually hire a College Student to work their and they actually provide a place to live upstairs, so they can't be paying them too much money, where's the money going?
You, the taxpayers, have in act been providing between $30,000.00 a year to $50,000.00 year just to keep this management company going, yet no one can understand where the money is going? Doesn't this management company PAY the City every month for leasing this space? It can't be much, if the taxpayers are forking up to $50,000.00 a year to keep them afloat.
Shanie Shields mentioned, maybe we should provide a pavilion and a grill so the Boaters can have a place to hang out. Well Shanie, not for nothing but, where's their money going? She also mentioned holding an event down there with a Jazz Band once a year. She said, don't hold it right at the Docks, hold it across the street. Shanie, wouldn't that event be called, "Riverfest?"
Anyhow, the whole thing stinks. If they had cut my electric off to my Boat several times, let me assure you, there would have been some serious issues right then and there. They treat their customers poorly and have no respect for their property. I have also heard numerous times that they would regularly go on board, (perhaps it's in their contract) and look around. I can remember being on a Boat/Yacht a few years ago with someone else who leased a slip there and when we pulled in, all the gates were locked. It took us almost an hour to get someone out there just so we could get off the docks.
So when the Daily Times writes an article about the Marina the next time, maybe they should talk to some of the Boat Owners out there and see just how many issues they have experienced too.
Where in the hell would they hold any promotional events except Brew River?? I would not feel safe anywhere in that neighborhood in broad daylite.

Jimmy, are you listening?
Let me add something here. Maritime law differs from many of the other laws that guide our country. If I recall correctly, there are laws that prevent the endangerment of a vessel. Such endangerment could stem from the disconnection of electrical service to said vessel. Once electrical service is disconnected, the vessel switches over to battery power as the converter/battery charger is now inoperable. The batteries are now used to power systems such as bilge pumps and other nessary systems needed to keep the vessel alive. As the batteries discharge from current drain, the vessel becomes endangered to the point it might even sink.
ReplyDeleteIt may also interest the readers to know that if they were to wake up some morning and find a boat at their dock, it is against the law to untie it. If you were to do that, you are responsible for the vessel. The same holds true for disconnecting the electrical service.
Hence the current SFD Fire Boat sinking TWICE in less than a week at the same Marina!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteYeah, and they want another fire boat so it can what - sink too?
ReplyDeleteThe Wicomico Yacht Club has covered/uncovered slips available right now!!!! They always have gas, and it is discounted for members. The food gets better every year, and there is a friendly atmosphere to go along with it. Call them today 410-219-5148.
ReplyDeleteForgot about WYC. Great place to tie your boat and enjoy boating activities.
ReplyDeleteI've been in this area for about five years and have never seen a jurisdiction under use or misuse prime water-front property as Salisbury does theirs.
ReplyDeleteWell, one of the functions of a marina is to attract people to an area. Boaters are, for the most part, a group of affluent people who come to an area to spend money and possibly return to invest in an area. This is one of the reasons for the marina in Crisfield and the attention it has been given, yet it has failed to do that. Salisbury's deal is a little different. You are almost at the head of a long river, and it is not a great destination given the neighborhood it is located in and the time it takes to get up the river. Crisfield is much more open and accessable but as I said earlier, it has yet to achieve the desired effect on the community. If memory serves me correctly, it takes about an hour to get up the river at Salisbury, going through areas where you have to run slow due to "no wake" areas and the two ferrys that operate on the river. Believe me, one of the last things a powerboater wants to do is run slow and allow the boat to fill up with green headed flies. After navigating the Wicomico River for about an hour, what are the attractions? Crisfield is a little different as the boater can operate at high speeds for most of the trip until the final approach to the marina. And when they arrive, the only attraction is a great marina situated in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do except go down town and look in the windows of closed stores. Marinas have to attract people to provide an economic advantage to the area they are located in to justify their existance. To my knowledge, neither have done that yet. While I can believe both started out to be a great idea, neither has been successful in that respect. I cannot comment knowledgeably on Salisbury's Marina, but Somers Cove in Crisfield stays about 70% occupied in the summer with permanant slip holders and the transent docks are only occupied on the 4th of July, Clam Bake, and Crab Derby. The rest of the time you will see one of the nicest marinas on the bay deserted, and trust me, I have traveled to several. Somers Cove has most all marinas on the bay put to shame.

ReplyDeleteThis post must be one of the Marina Committee members they have always kept the Marina prices higher then the WYC where they keep there boats.
why put 860 thou into a new fire boat when:
ReplyDelete1) they couldn't keep the inflatable equivalent afloat?
2)there will be nowhere to dock it?
the waterfront IS under and mis used!!!
unless brew river burns, what's the point of a new fireboat, or having one at all?
ReplyDeleteA fireboat in Salisbury. Well, if someone could explain the logic of it, I would be more than willing to listen. What occupied structures are only accessable from the water? I guess I shoud say, "riddle me this fireman". You don't have a case for a fireboat, period. Although not a citizen of Salisbury, I see no reason to burden the tax payers with another toy. Crisfield has more occupied condos and have no reason for a fireboat. I don't believe Ocean City has one either.
