Chesapeake Waste Removal

"Hey Joe,

I'm a customer of Chesapeake Waste Removal and I just got my bill for the next quarter in the mail today. Now I've been a customer of theirs for 3 years now, and every quarter we have a fuel surcharge added to our bill. When I signed up, I was told as long as gas stayed above $2 a gallon then they would charge a fuel surcharge. We had one last quarter but I could understand the charge still there since gas had just fallen below $2/gallon just after they sent out the bill. Well Joe as you know gas has stayed below $2 for well over 3 months and I don't see it gaining 30 cents in the next three weeks to warrant the fuel surcharge. You and many others might say "Why not just call them and complain?" Well i had a couple coworkers complain last corner, and they told me the owner John threaten to raise their rates, and that their home service was spotty at best. I love my service with Chesapeake and their rates are low, but I would rather John raise rates instead of including an unnecessary service fee. I just wonder if anyone else is a tiny bit ticked off about this like I am?

P.S. I refuse to buy a permit for the Wicomico dump, because I don't want to help fund criminal enterprises."

  1. Gasoline has been under $2.00. However, trash trucks use diesel fuel. Which for the most part has stayed above the $2.00 price..

  2. Some people believe that the words "gas" and "fuel" are interchangeable and they are not. Those large trash trucks don't run on gas. They run on diesel fuel. Diesel fuel has not fallen below $2.00 a gallon yet and I won't hold my breath until they do.

  3. first of all your complaining about $2dollars as a fuel surcharge! Now thats funny since you are asking the owner of the company to raise your rates which would probably be by more than 2 dollars. Some ppl i just dont understand. Maybe you would like to be the maintence on those big trucks! I say leave the low rates and charge me 2 dollars fuel surcharge. So they didnt do what they said they were going to do....WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD...PPL MAKE PROMISES AND DONT KEEP THEM EVERYDAY.

  4. I don't pay their fuel surcharge for anything.. and Diesel hasn't been below 2 dollars for years... but has decreased 50% from the highs

You are still funding a so called "criminal enterprises" by paying Chesapeake Waste Removal to pick up your trash. Chesapeake Waste Removal pays a tipping fee for the privilege of using the Newland Park Landfill.

  6. You should be glad you aren't a customer of Waste Management. Their fuel surcharge is absolutely ridiculous! They also significantly mark up dumping fees charged by the landfill and pass that along to their customers. Try looking into that for a shock. And, for the record, diesel prices may be higher than gas prices, but BOTH have been going down. Most trucking companies have adjusted their fuel surcharge accordingly.

  7. yes.....with chesapeake waste you are dealing with nothing but criminals. john speake and his brother run this "operation". if you check up on them you will see that they were both convicted and spent time in jail for their fraudulent practices in their family waste business about 15 years ago. maybe someone should dig alittle deeper on this?

  8. They have the best price and compared to the other two large companies. At least half of the price and my guys that pick up on my street are great, heck they even come up the driveway and get the can if I forget. Local service, local owner, local money stays local.

  9. If you have this much time to worry yourself into a borderline tizzy over something so petty; you have bigger problems to deal with than a chicken guano billing issue.

  10. They have stopped the practice now, but Chesapeake use to pay to have one of those stickers placed on the front page of The Daily Time advertising a $45 quarterly rate, even though with the fuel surcharge, the quarterly rate was actually $54. Creative, but deceptive, marketing. I don't know why they didn't just advertise their quarterly rate was $30 quarter and then impose a $24 fuel surcharge on top of that. Chesapeake will never lower or eliminate their fuel surcharge. If anything, it will simply continue going up. To be less slippery in their pricing and marketing practices, they should simply add the surcharge into the quarterly rate. The reality is, Chesapeake's rate is $54 per quarter and not the $45 they advertise. But $45 sounds much better.

  11. You know, this concerns me too, as a customer of theirs. They send out advertisements in the paper to MISLEAD customers. They post $ 45.00 plus fuel charges, when the bill is never $45.00. I am not sure that this isn't something that the Consumer Protection Division of the Comptrollers office for the State of Maryland needs to investigate. If the price is going to be $49.00 per quarter, they should come out and say that, not show you the lower figure . LET THE BUYER BEWARE!!!!!!!

  12. John & his brother aren't the only crooks there... The Roe boys (father & 1 son work at Eastern Quality Vending above Chesapeake Waste & the other son works at Chesapeake Waste - both businesses are owned by the Speakes) are just as bad. I say find another trash company. The majority of Chesapeake Waste's employees are guys on work realease. I sure wouldn't want them servicing my home!!

  13. Its not just the $9. per billing that caused me to drop them, it's the bait and switch, the dishonesty. Not to mention that nasty toxic garbage juice, purposely draining out of the truck in front of every house, threw every neighborhood, the entire length of the route of each truck. They do that to keep the weight down, removing the fluids, to cut their cost at the landfill. Think that's EPA approved?
I'd rather pay $10. more to a law abiding, honest company.

  14. Do what I am going to do, deduct
the fuel charge from the bill.
If they do not want to accept it there is another company that comes thru my neighborhood. When
I sent in my last payment, I wrote on it, I will not pay the fuel charge on my nect bill.

  16. Trash removal is just like any other eastern shore biz. They all suck. they never show up when they are supose to..and you always hear an excuse why......
Allied and Waste Managment are the same company.....
    Chesapeake is...well enough said!
Bennett......Have you ever been behind-beside or around them...WOW what a mouth on that little boy.....Maybe Grandpop should wash his mouth out with soap.....and teach all the other Drivers Road manners.....

  17. Frustrating thing is, when Chesapeake uses the little yellow stickers on the front page of the Times, it never includes the "fuel charge". They get ya with the eye catching price and then add the other later. When you call in to inquire, they talk to you like a "red headed step child" and tell you that you were supposed to have been told about other fees when you signed up. Point is: Know what it costs to do business and be profitable, and pass that on to the customer, openly and honestly.

  18. Hip Boots 2:36, I laughed when I read your comment...Chesapeake Waste Removal is the nastiest company to deal with. When you call with a complaint, the owner will make sure he gets even. About 4 years ago, we were a customer & not all of our trash was being removed from the container.

My husband called because we did pay for "all of the trash to be removed", not just part of it. Well, that did not suit John so he had the trash truck come by when we were both at work, dump the trash we had in the container and then take the dumpster away. We still had 3 weeks of service coming to us.....and he refused to give us send us that money.

My husband was mad as fire but I convinced him that it was good riddance as far as that company.

  19. Just ran across the 2/2/09 write up on Chesapeake Waste Removal. Funny how things come out. John Speake & Dean Roe are both convicted felon's. Both were convicted for involvement in the same incident & shared the same cell in Allenwood Federal Pen. Connected?? Hmmmm strange don't you think....

Anyone who knows them would figure out pretty soon their connections.

Dean Roe is the front runner. John Speake follows & has been taught well by Roe who has a past of several criminal convictions. John Speake is quite a con man. Let those involved with him beware. There is much more than meets the eye.

P.S. Speake & Roe's felony conviction involved billing fraud in the trash business...
    Imagine That....

  20. These sales people just blanketed our neighborhood in Chestertown. Their prices are 1/2 to 2/3 of Allied Waste's. AW picks up recycling; Chesapeake says they MAY do that in a few months if enough folks in the neighborhood go with them (cost factors). I think that Allied has the advantage of a much bigger customer base, which allows them to offer recycling without losing money. Can anyone shed light on recycling by Chesapeake? We have 2 days to rescind our order.
