The Worcester County Health Department in Snow Hill is less than five years old.
During the construction they apparently hired a landscape contractor to landscape the new building. They planted bushes around the building and contrasted them with rock.
It was very simple but very nice.
At some point recently they must have hired someone else that told them to get rid of what the landscaper had installed.
So today a crew of men showed up at the Health Department and pulled out all the bushes and with bobcats picked up all of the rock.
This was all loaded up into a truck and taken guess where?
To the landfill!
Everyone know that the county paid a premium price for all the work that was done during the construction of that building including the landscaping. Only to have it ripped out and thrown away. To fill up the land fill further on perfectly good landscaping materials is inexcusable.
Worcester County is home to the Worcester County FreeCycle, that if notified would have had people racing to Snow Hill to pick the materials .
In this day of drastic budget cuts, and no one knows if there job is next; I find this an extreme waste our our tax dollars and I expect better from the County to set a high example for it's citizens to follow.
What a waste!
Excellent Post! Excellent Reporting! Something you'd NEVER see in the Daily Times.
ReplyDeleteAs the spouse of a WCHD employee, it's so "nice" to see they can spend that kind of money while my family has to live with no pay raises, 4 furlough days and potential staff cuts!
ReplyDeleteAll of this kind of spending needs to be cut and cut now!
ReplyDeleteThere is no reason to be spending a dime on landscaping, decorating,
or even cutting the grass in the median strips.
I know, I know... What about the contractors who earn their living on government contracts?
The government is tooo big, and we can't afford to pay for it, PERIOD!
How much does the dump charge a contractor to dump at the landfill?
It is charged by the ton!
This I presume was billed to the county, by the contractor, that was paid by the county!
Times are getting sooo tight I see more and more trash getting thrown into the woods again, because contractors can't afford the tipping fees.
This utterly STUPID!
Sorry to get a little off topic here Joe - but I really felt a need to respond to
ReplyDeleteAnon 9:18 - what are you whining about here really?
Where I work, nobody has had a raise in 3 years and there have been layoffs, there was no bonus for last year and everyone knows they may just be the next one on the chopping block. Bet you have benefits though huh? Yeah, we lost those too, to keep our jobs. We all figured if we could keep our jobs, we would give a little too. We know things are slow out here in the public business arena.
So sick of hearing State/County/City employees and/or their spouses bellyaching!
I wake up every morning thankful I still have a job! Many don't.
A crew of men huh, yeah I can picture now.
ReplyDeleteIts all about spending everything they can before the physical year ends, so it dosent effect their allotted money for the next year. This is done in EVERY form of gov. since time began. There is NO incentive to save, rather spend more to get more. I lost my job of 15yrs with the state of MD, for trying to stop and/or change this corrupt practice.

ReplyDeleteYou don't get it! How is it whining when all that I'm doing is making a comparison? How about no raises for 8 years, every year worrying if the governor is cutting your program thus your employement, AND no bonuses EVER! It's no different from you so why not learn some compassion for your fellow human beings.
I am thankful for our jobs, glad you still have one since our governor will be eliminating more.
If you could read the post and my comment, you would see the comparison between the county wasting money versus taking care of their employees, that's what I'm discussing.
Stay on subject, leave your venting behind and you'll be a better person for it.
As I see it, 9:18 was the one not on subject. Had to bring in the personal side which is not what the post was about.
ReplyDeletewhat they did here is wrong. No doubt about it, but there is waste in EVERY branch of government and until the people rise up and vote in elected officials to take care of the waste, it will continue.
It will be political suicide for the one(s) who do it, but it would better the people as a whole.
