Daily Times Greg Bassett Responds To Jim Ireton

"Hi Jim.

Thank you for your kind inquiry.

In the court of public opinion, people are free to make their own determinations and offer their opinions via many public forum opportunities. This applies to countless issues affecting countless public personalities and public officials; it happens all the time every day.

As always, the opinion pages of The Daily Times and DelmarvaNow.com are open for you to offer your viewpoint at anytime.

Cheers!

GREG BASSETT
Executive Editor
The Daily Times/Delmarva Media Group"

Mr. Bassett/Daily Times Staff:

Your response does not answer any part of any of my questions: The Daily Times did not state my position, hence misinformation is out in the public realm due to your error. I have no intention or need to get into a Grapevine war, or spend precious time crafting a letter to the editor stating my position when I have already done so. If you, and the staff at the Daily Times, are proud of this coverage - than I assume you, and Mr. Penserga, had an ulterior motive in not printing my clearly stated opinion, and approved a damning Grapevine that is so patently untrue. Salisbury collectively mourns your decision to sell newspapers and lower the quality of journalism in this community. It looks as if Mr. Comegys, Mr. Caldwell, and Mr. Della Penna are not the only opponents I have on the ballot this year. Thank you for your time.

Jim Ireton - Candidate for Mayor

  1. Bassett knows full well his response was total BS. We know who they endorse, they know who they endorse, and we know who gets the shaft due to their slanted coverage (you and me). Telling a mayoral candidate to take it up in the Grapevive? Are you kidding? Pure disrespect.

In the words of Dennis Green:

"They are who we thought they were"

  3. Two Sentz thats a great quote from Dennis Green. Again, we find slanted information, half truths and down right lies from this paper. Put everyone on a level playing field, thats all anyone ask for with any integerity. This is total disrepect and poor journalism. I ma totally disgusted.

  4. Mr. Ireton,

I believe Mr. Bassett is still upset you supported Frank Kratovil and this is his way of getting back at you. Remember, he's the one who has to go home to the wife that no longer has a job in Gilchrest's office.

  5. I have to ask. How does Greg Bassett look his self in the mirrow? I just can't imagine
    going thru life printing false
information like this. How do you go home to your family at night.
    Is that a lie also.

  6. Guess I have to sign this one....

Greg Bassett and others at the Daily Times (and their other E.S. papers/reporters)have chosen to do whatever they want, including purposely not getting public information out correctly, or just not putting it out at all, putting their spin on what was said (even when they are provided printed copies of EXACTLY what was said) and just doing what they can to cause a stir in many instances.
I have said it before, and I will say it again....
Being from Delmar AND being a former Councilperson AND being former Chairperson of the largest community event in Delmar (Day in the Park)AND being involved with the Greater Delmar Chamber of Commerce, in my opinion, the Daily Times has not reported anything coming out of Delmar, for many years, which they did not put their negative spin on.

I believe people WANT to be involved in their communities, but when you have the largest newspaper in the area flat out not caring about the communities and not running your information, that is awful.

As I have been told, Delmar is not the only community treated this way by the Daily Times and their other papers.

Heck, the LAUREL Star covers Delmar, and Laurel is our rival town! Go figure!

Is Joe's blog any different? YES IT IS. Sure, Joe can be biased at times with his posts, however, a blog is set up so that all sides get reflected, either by Joe, or by the people who post on here.
AND...AND....Joe has made the decision to not only be just another run-of-the-mill blog...he has chosen to also provide much needed community announcements so more of us will know what is going on.
Best of all....IT'S FREE. Joe didn't raise his price (LOL) to give us all LESS like the Daily Times did.

It is no surprise to me that Mr. Ireton is having issues with this newspaper. Mr. Ireton, just find another way of getting your word out. There ARE better ways and those other ways will probably not try to change what it is you're saying only for you to find it was changed after it is in print

I may not always agree with what Joe has on here, seriously, but I do appreciate what it is he's doing.

Sorry for such a long response Joe, but I felt I had to say it.
I'm am definitely not the most eloquent writer and don't claim to be but I feel I made my point.

    Sincerely,
    Diane Buckley

  7. Shrug it off, Jim. We know the DT for what it is. Your message will be heard by anyone who cares to listen. IGNBLFY!

  9. "Telling a mayoral candidate to take it up in the Grapevive? Are you kidding? Pure disrespect."

I couldn't agree more. That move shows absolutely no class, and no respect for not only Ireton, but the work that he (Bassett) is SUPPOSED to be doing. It couldn't be any clearer now. The Times has an agenda, and they're going to do, say, or spin anything they want to get their good 'ol boy elected. The cronyism in this town is disgusting.

  10. Jim, are you willing to do a live debate with the other candidates?
(everyone else calls you Jim, I took the liberty. Hope thats o.k.)

  11. It's not just an opinion, or their veiw. They have purposely in all of 35yrs that I personally can swear to, knowingly and deliberately misinformed the public. Truly, it's nothing short of treason, used exactly like war time propaganda.
To abuse public trust and lead a city and its citizens in harms way, is exactly what terrorist do. How much harm to us all have they caused since their existence here in Salisbury? I'm certain they would deserve a prison term.

  12. I see Bassett hasn't changed since he was a wise _ss in high school!

  13. The "Cheers!" at the end of his amateurish missive indicates a lightweight mind is occupying a heavyweight position at the DT. A high school journalism student would understand objectivity and professionalism better than Mr. Bassett and would probably accept a lower salary.

  14. It may have a little further to go as what to be desired.

I've never been a drummer for the paper, however the lawsuit article, no council members informed was a good article.

Now they are after the story with the county audit. You have to admit it's better than what we have been getting for years.

They have to dance with both 'Bell's' of the ball. In this case I have to agree with Jim. Misinformation is not news or good journalism.

  15. Jim

It is a sad commentary and a absolute and keen view of the obvious.

Bassett and Carmean have and agenda and they WILL use the Daily Disappointment to further their individual agendas.

If as in the current Mayors situation the Bassettman and his Crimean conspirator are determined to further her ill conceived purposes you are but fodder for their pen and ink.

They will use the "rag" unfettered by any oversight and certainly not bothered by public opinion or declining sales.

Both the Bassettman and Carmean are over educated failures. Each frustrated by their inabilities to achieve more in life than they have.

My advice to you Jim is to ignore the Daily Disappointment as so many other former subscribers are doing. If you depend on or expect the "DD", to even so much as, print the truth of what you offer as a Mayoral candidate then you are not as smart as I know you to be.

  16. It could have been predicted. I can't count all of the free political "advertising" presented on the front page as "news" has been afforded Barrie, Gary, Dunn and their ilk over the years. There have been some mighty big stories over the years - sewage in the river, late audits and financial mismanagement, the attack on Rachel Polk, none of it fairly reported in tthe DT as far as I can see.

  17. One has to wonder why the Daily Times is always in the tank for Barrie Tilghman and her minions, like Gary=Barrie Comegys.

Why does the Daily Times join in the effort to crucify Debbie Campbell, who commands so much respect in the state and country for her work, everywhere except here?

It's not just regular political bias. This newspaper participates in character assassination. Now, I suppose the same could be said of this blog, but one kind of expects things with blogs because they aren't multi-staffed corporations.

Whatever happened to the traditions of the "Fourth Estate"? Walter Cronkite and David Brinkley are rolling over in their graves.

    Daily Times has no class.

  18. Greg Bassett serves Barrie Tilghman. Shanie Shields works at the daily times serving Greg Bassett. They all three are trying to be in service of Gary Comegys. Oh what a tangled web we weave...

  19. One of the papers mainstay's is surely people new to this area. If they continue smear tactics and unbalanced coverage of candidates they stand to loose that population of readers also.

It's clear the mare is out and I doubt even gary's friends would vote for him now after raising their taxes, water bills and reversed his promise to fund police and firefighters with better pay.

Gary seems to think people may have forgoten, well, that's gary for you dumb as a box of rocks

  20. I doubt that many people really take the Daily Times seriously anymore. It's deterioration is well known in the community and often discussed.

Bassett's response was totally indicative of his ever growing arrogance and his immaturity, particularly as a so called "journalist".
