Daily Times covers Ireton Press Conference, Slants it for Comegys

While Jim Ireton's Saturday press conference was devoid of televised media coverage (WMDT & WBOC), it was covered by me and a reporter from the Daily Times. Today I decided to search for anything the Daily Times might have run.

The Article

The article starts off with a pretty clear and telling title "Mayoral candidate criticizes stormwater upgrade". OK, cool.

It goes on for about 160 words, including one quote which was only two words long, explaining some of the points Ireton made during the press conference (though the reporter didn't actually stick around for it).

Then comes the kicker: An abrupt shift in topic and tone as the author completely switches direction and sounds off for Gary Comegys complete with a much lengthier quote than the one attributed to Jim Ireton. So an article supposedly about Ireton turns out to merely be a setup to plug Comegys?

We all know the Daily Times has been a henchman for the Barrie/Gary crew, unfortunately. I guess they don't feel the people of Salisbury need or deserve equal, unbiased news coverage? With the media bias clearly slanted against Jim Ireton, we will have an uphill battle over the next several weeks but say it with me, "Help is on the way!"

  1. Mr. Comegy's is most likely a nice enough person. Being a nice person, however, does not qualify him as and astute council person.

Watching Mr. Comegy's over the last several years I am convinced he is 1. unqualified to be on the City Council 2. He like several other Council persons appears to be a pawn for the Mayor.

Were Mr Comegy's to be elected as Mayor he would be nothing more than a puppet for the current Mayor.

Salisbury deserves the effort and energy of a young visionary. Someone who has demonstrated a willingness to serve the entire community. Lastly someone who is intellectual capable of serving the City's needs as opposed to the wants of individuals.

I believe Mr. Ireton has and does possess the skills required to be a top notch Mayor.

  2. You ain't seen nothin yet, kid. Wait until Greg Bassett and Joe Carmean start printing flat out lies about Jim and/or Bob Caldwell. Hopefully, they won't let them get away with it this go round. Hopefully, they will sue them for slander and libel. Tim Spies should have sued the paper and Barrie Tilghman.

  3. Two Sentz, I agree wholeheartedly.

IF an opposing comment were to be in this article, it either should have come from the current mayor or from all THREE of the other mayoral candidates.

Heck, they didn't even mention Della Penna in their editorial Sunday.

And you can bet they'll go after Bob Caldwell, too. He's been an outspoken critic and has a voting record.

I think both Ireton and Caldwell are great. I have nothing against Della Penna, but he didn't even make it through the primary last time.

Comegys? Just Gary=Barrie. And he may be a "nice enough person," but not from what I've seen from watching those meetings.

  4. If you research the qualifications to be a Editor the foremost qualities are " a strong sense of fairness and ethics.

Wow!! I guess the Bassettman and his henchman Mr. Carmean missed those classes.

The only appropriate manner to editorialise a biased position is to declare your biases.

  5. How can any grown person with free will and, at the very least, peanuts for brains allow themselves to be a "pawn" for ANYONE?

Everyone says these folks are "pawns" for BPT but I don't buy it. People don't play ball like that unless they too have something to gain.
