BEND OVER MARYLAND -- FOR BARACK

Next week's presidential inauguration of Barack Obama has already cost Maryland at least $11 million, state officials said today.

The unbudgeted spending, mainly for transportation and security, is part of some $75 million that Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia have already had to absorb, Washington Mayor Adrian Fenty told reporters.

The $11 million figure also includes costs associated with Obama's Saturday train trip and scheduled stop in Baltimore.

  1. All that money for security to protect what? A president of the United States? Terrible!

And all that transportation for what? The result of a historic inauguration? Awful!

DAMN that man for being so popular! DAMN him for making history!

I'm going to start a new political party to ensure that we only elect status quo candidates with no ability to inspire anyone so we don't go to all this expense.

  2. Try not to forget that these three areas have always had to provide this type of security during inaugurations.

It is part of the price of being that close to the festivities.

    Stop pretending to be insulted.

The inaugral could occur -- in DC, I think -- without the need for the State of Maryland to provide the special security, etc. for him to put on a show in Balto.

Did you hear that Maryland is already facing an almost $2 Billion deficit?

  5. The state and federal government are facing deficits okay. Well just a hypothetical question here:
You are facing foreclosure on your house because you didn't make your $1200 mortgage payment for two months. Your checking account is drained, out right nodda dime you can take out, BUT you have $4000 in your savings account. Do you use $2400 from your savings account to pay your mortgage? Or do you sit and whine because you can't pay your mortgage and are going to be living on the streets? Any person with any sense would take the money from the savings account to pay the mortgage because you don't want to be left homeless and you don't want to lose your house that you have invested in for say 15yrs! You don't run out and try to buy another house real quick, you don't pay your neighbors mortgage while they are staking a foreclosure sign in your front yard right? Of course not. So the federal and state governments are supposedly screwed for money right now. Well the president still gets his salary, the government officials still get their salaries, as the state workers are being laid off. There are still supplies being shipped to Africa to help the AIDS victim kids, there is still cargo ships taking supplies to other countries that America is paying for. Malaysia is still getting aid from the US. If the US wants to make a difference in peoples lives how about starting right here on our own land? How about worrying about our people before feeding, clothing, and medicating people in other countries?
It is a crock of crap! Let's try this just once, put America and it's people first! I don't know just seems to me with all the every day Joe's being laid off and forced out of their homes that the economy is never going to rebound. But those darn government officials they sure are getting their pay and not having to worry about mortgage payments and utility bills, even though they get their raises every year they are requiring that others in government are given days off. They are surely denying a minimum wage increase every session. The government is shafting anyone who makes under $75k a year and sadly the majority of those people are too stupid to do anything about it.

  8. But lets look at the "bright" side....98.5 f.m. radio station is giving tickets to the free Bruce Springsteen concert for caller # Nine all day long.

  9. It is beyond me why anyone would want to put the blame of Maryland's financial state on a new president. Maryland has been in a deficit since before the election and before 2008. We can thank our governor for that. Now, I will say that Obama is soon to be the President of the UNITED STATES, so why shouldn't ALL states have to provide security and money for the inauguration?

  10. In 10 year increments this is the surplus/deficit of the US (in billions)
    1960:+0.3, 1970:+2.8, 1980:-59.5, 1990:-220.5, 2000:+237.0, 2005:-318.0

There has been deficit under both republican and democrat. There has also been a 100% increase in population over that time period. The point of the matter is the government needs to be held accountable for their actions. Whether it is spending tax payers money here at home or overseas. There needs to be accountablity among ALL people. I am sure there are people who read this living in a house they can't afford and driving a car that looks good but they also cannot afford. It isn't just the governments fault, the every day people need to see many of them are contributors to the decline of the American (true American) way of life. Stop trying to live outside of your means.

As far wasting all this money for Obama's inauguration, that is jsut insane. There are ways around all that spending the problem is people don't look for the lower cost options, they take what is thrown at them and say Okay.
