I am wondering how many readers are appalled at Royal Farms for firing the clerk, who was robbed the other night, for having more than $50 in her register. It's my understanding that this Royal Farms has been robbed many times in the past. It makes one ask why they only have one clerk working and why they are doing more to protect their employees. Obviously Royal Farms puts very little value on their employee if they would fire someone for the reason they have stated. I hope the citizens of Seaford, DE rally behind this young woman and boycott the Royal Farms store. If both Seaford Royal Farms are owned by the same owner, I would hope everyone would boycott both stores. I would also suggest the readers take a minute and email their complaint to corporate@royalfarms.com, and let the corporate office know the actions of this store are unacceptable.

Show me any business that cares about its employees these days. Sadly, that sentiment left along time ago, when all the Mom and Pop stores closed shop.
ReplyDeleteYou know I work for a large company that is family owned and its true that places like royal farms and the wawa's, the walmart's they don't care about you like a family owned business do...I saw this story on WMDT this morning and was totally outraged over it....this girl did the best she could given she was the only one there!! I wouldn't go into another royal farms ever if they don't hire her back....the reasons for firing her in this situation is just outrageous...I hope she fairs well over this and her family comes out on top....
ReplyDeleteIf the company has a rule about only keeping a set amount of money in the drawer, and she kept more than that, then she should be reprimanded some how. Has she violated this or other policies in the past? I don't think we have all of the info to make a sound decision.
ReplyDeleteIf this store has been the subject of previous robberies, then I'm sure the management made it quite clear to only keep change for $20. By keeping more, the robbers will keep coming back because they know they can get more.
If you owned a convienence store that was robbed and the employee violated the rules, what would you do?
Show me an emplyee that can't follow instructions that you let stay.. they have a standing hard rule to empty the drawer to deter robberies for everyones safety, she couldn't follow it. see ya!, bet that was not the only thing she did wrong.
ReplyDeleteAll late night conveience markets are subject to crime from the drug addicted criminal element that infests our society. As 20 year, everyday, customer of a local Royal Farm Store, I know that they have a zero tolerance policy for employees not making safe drops and keeping too much money in the register. I've known of numerous cashiers and one store manager who were fired for stealing, (caught robbing the till on camera), and of others, the manager, being in on robberies by making sure that the "helper thief" showed up at times when money was being counted or an unusually high amount was out of the safe. Of course, NO innocent employee is responsible for being robbed, but they are responsible for adhering to the cash available limit. I strongly agree with the ZERO tolerance policy as it limits the amount of loot and incentive for druggies to rob the place. I'm fairly certain that all employees are covered and sign paperwork that they understand of the risks of having too much cash on hand and that it is an automatic dismissal violation of company rules. The employee in question should accept his or her failure to follow this VITAL policy and look for another job.

I feel sorry for her being in that situation but Royal Farms had every right to fire her. I used to work for them (Bridgeville store, over-night, with one other person). As large as that store is there was only 1 person in the deli area & myself on the register to do everything from 11p-7a. I was able to keep my drawer at the required amount even on busy nights/mornings. You just have to know how to manage your time. I seriously doubt she was alone either. The other person may have been in the deli or on break - but I doubt she was the only employee working. I have substituted in both of the Seaford stores before & the safe is located close enough to the register to drop 1 bill at a time, between customers, if need be.
ReplyDeleteTo Mardela, since this is about rules, and you see them as cut and dry, then you must be content with your Propane pricing and not complain about the Gas Company's rules. Right?
ReplyDeleteTo Anon 10:29, the company has had an opportunity to offer clarification but has refused comment. So at this time, that IS the reason they are standing behind.
Think about this, you're standing behind the register, with today's pricing, how many customers do you think come through before you have made $30 (the difference between the $50 rule and change for $20). Now do you choose to move the money while someone, who is shady, is in the store, or do you wait until you feel safe?
Yes, there are rules, but there are also circumstances. I believe most would agree this was a poor decision on Royal Farms part.
Don't be so quick to judge the young woman so harshly. When you are the only person working, there are bound to be times that certain tasks cannot be carried out due to all the other responsibilities you have. Perhaps if businesses would stop cutting payroll hours to save money (what I call the "shoot yourself in the foot policy") people would be able to fulfill all the duties they have. It seems that these businesses, including the one I work for, care far more for making money than they do for the people out there making that money for them.
ReplyDeleteUnless I had the whole story, I wouldn't make rash decisions such as declaring that I'd never shop in a Royal Farms again. If the young lady did, indeed, violate the employer's policies, then she should be reprimanded at the very least and fired if she has received previous warnings. Of course, we feel for the young lady, but there may be more to this story. I do think, though, that convenience stores need to have at least two people on duty at all times, even if it does cut down on the profit. How many of you remember the lady clerk who was killed a number of years ago in the store on N. Salisbury Blvd. Her employer had her working all alone. How dangerous is that!

ReplyDeleteMy husband drives a large truck and pays in cash each time he gets gas. If he purchased gas, his money alone would have put her over her limit in the cash register. Is that realisitic? The clerk suffered from being robbed (and may countinue to suffer for quite some time - ask any bank teller that has been robbed). Those things do not escape your memory quickly. Was that not punishment enough? Did she realy deserve to be fired in an economy like this? That's sad.
ReplyDeletethe same thing happen in june this year at the royal farms on south divison street in salisbury md. were a clerk was fired as well,for the same thing. saw the story on 47 news. no comments were giving from the management because it is forbidden. they would be fired as well. what the girl said in the interview was 100% correct. it is hard sometimes to drop monies when your busy and the only cashier there. you drop a.s.a.p.. i hope things work out for the young lady and her family...all the royal farms are owned by the same man in baltimore md. john kemp. talk about family business it's a shame the way the employees are treated. news is going around about the new hebron store about a boycott there. i hope the baltimore office gets this blog so that things will change..the next time the clerk may not be so lucky and get away with their life.

ReplyDeleteI would also like to add that while I was working at Royal Farms (before I worked night shift) a co-worker was robbed at gun point & had more than the allowed amount in her drawer. She was not fired. Either they've had so many robberies that their policy is no longer lax (the incident I'm reffering to was about 4 years ago) or the employee had some other infraction previously.
ReplyDeleteGreat Job royal farms!!! The 50.00 policy is great, it would prevent others from doing the same thing as this robber did. Royal Farms show be thanked by all their people for caring about them. That store never has one person working. They won't open the doors until both people are there in the mornings. They are very pleasant and always friendly. How many times have we read that the same place was robbed more than once? Maybe if these derilects get only 50.00 they will go elsewhere and stop invading our neighborhood. the way I see it is that she endangers everyone else working there. She may not be there next time and next time he may have a weapon. Great Job Royal Farms.
ReplyDeleteDid anyone ever stop to think that with the holiday season and the clerk being ALONE that she may have been too busy to make a cash drop?And while dropping extra cash is always a good idea, would that have saved her life if the robber decided to kill her because he could not get all the money he had hoped for? Royal Farms will not get anymore money out of me.

ReplyDeleteHoly cow! My truck holds between $65 and $110 dollars worth of fuel, depending on price, and I want a coffee and tastykake too. I'm in line with 5 others who need to get to work. She would have to make 3 deposits during my transaction alone. All the while others are in line. Time to either hire a deposit clerk or change the amount for the deposit. If that's not enough,, just give the clerks a right to carry permit. That will end all this crap. In fact, shouldn't this be the first choice?
ReplyDeleteThe girl that worked at the Royal Farms on South Division St. wasn't fired, she quit. The store just got robbed again tonight and instead of worrying about Royal Farms, why aren't we worried about why Salisbury police haven't caught any of the people robbing businesses and now killing (at the shell station across from the mall)?
