While people are coming out of the wood work to run for Mayor and no doubt we'll see more putting their name into the hat, including current Mayor Barrie Tilghman, the City is in major debt. Businesses are leaving much faster than they're opening and I don't care what the Chief of the SPD says, CRIME REPORTS ARE DOWN 4%.
So how can we afford to hire additional Police Officers and pay Public Works what they deserve? You MUST lower crime and encourage new businesses and taxes into the area.
Mayor Tilghman has done just the opposite and my guess is because they lied about the capacity available at the new WWTP and they're more interested in driving out Perdue and other major users of water and sewer in the City.
Barrie Tilghman can't hide it any longer. That new Waste Water Treatment Plant was supposed to be 100% on line months ago, yet the local MSM has conveniently ignored the lack of any ribbon cutting.
No one is going to be willing to open a business in an area with such high crime, it's not worth the risk. Our economic situation nation wide is not looking good and while I have spoken to numerous friends who are out of jobs, there's truly nothing worth while out there to replace their former positions.
Again, the Press isn't telling you the truth and exposing just how bad things are. Share your stories and or information about friends and business associates and how their job searching is coming along. At least here on the Blog you'll get the truth.
In the mean time, aggressive crime fighting is what's necessary to turn things around here. Gary Comegys asking citizens to get more involved is complete bulsh!t. It has been suggested that the SPD use "No Knock Warrants" to go after the drug dealers and serious criminals. A no knock warrant means once they receive the warrant the Police can simply go to the address and bust through the door without knocking. This has been done in Baltimore and New York City for years and it has proven to work.
One you've made your arrests you wait a day or two and go back to the same address and do it again. Then wait a week and do it again. Criminals quickly get the hint that the Police are NOT going to give in and you just keep doing this until the criminals take their business elsewhere or they all end up in Jail.
Now, we ALL know the SPD doesn't have the manpower to pull this off so one of the things I'll be looking for Mayoral wise is just how much they're going to support the Police Department, including such a Task Force. Gary Comegys and Barrie Tilghman have completely screwed up and haven't listened to taxpayers in the past by making Public Safety their #1 priority. Because of that, crime is a major issue and even Chief Webster's hands are tied. You can't say he hasn't asked for enough Staff to take on such a project.
Once you aggressively remove the criminals it's then up to our Judges to put these criminals in Jail so they don't get right back on the streets and start up business right away again. The positive outcome to all of this is that crime will drop like it did in NYC in the 80's and we'll watch businesses come back into our community raising the taxable income and we'll see less vacant real estate around the City. It's a win/win situation.
Let's see if our Candidates confront Chief Webster about such an aggressive program. Are there questions YOU would like to ask these Candidates? Are there solutions YOU have thought of that hasn't been considered by the current administration?
The part about the courts is so true. In Sunday's Court Briefs the cases were from Worcester County. About 95% of the charges listed were nol pros and ALL of the others were stet or PBJ. Not a single guilty finding in four columns. One person was charged, released, and then charged again with the exact same crimes. All of those charges for both arrests were nol pros. Some charges involved drugs, concealed weapons, etc. What is going on? Wicomico's is as bad.
ReplyDeleteI think we need more cameras. If people see cameras everywhere, they will realize there is no way to be private. Then, they won't break the law because they know they will get caught. We also need a youth brigade to spy on their neighbors and parents. They can receive rewards for turning in friends, relatives, neighbors who break the law. It has worked in other countries. We need for everyone to become so paranoid they won't even think of breaking the law. Then, we will be happy. We should use the Terrorists Laws to beat the criminals down. Who needs warrants? We can listen in on their phone calls, tape record their conversations in their homes, and watch every move they make in their automobiles. There will be no way to break the law and get away with it. That's what we need - a bigger big brother. We need the biggest big brother ever! We are a big country and we need big siblings to protect us from evil.
ReplyDeleteGary Comegys is one of the main reason Salisbury is in the fiscal shape it is in now!He approved everything the mayor wanted from the tifs for the developers to the slum lords. He is truly one big piece of Chit.He voted against everything positive proposed for the city.Maybe he will not hide his take home state vehicle in Parsons cemetery anymore. Still not sure how he has been to so many city meetings and his boss at the state level says his time is accounted for.Well we all know the sorry asss shape the state is in.
ReplyDeleteIreton confronted one of these issues this morning on WICO. Ireton said it was unfortunate that the administration is making Chief Webster run against him - by making Webster the attack dog.
ReplyDeleteI lost my job at the end of September, having relocated to the area for my company, when they "restructured".
ReplyDeleteI am having no luck in my job search, even with "networks, connections, and contacts" in the area. I was recently at a workshop mandatory for DLLR, and found a roomfull of others in the same situation. They were from all areas of business, had various skills levels, and all agreed with me, the economy is not good here, and businesses are not hiring.
Joe, I have to remind you (and you know this) that municipal debt is directly related to taxes as well as spending habits. Everybody wants these upgraded amenities (such as the WWTP) but nobody wants to pay for them because the improvements don't directly benefit them; they benefit new residents and businesses. If Salisbury is to grow, money has to be spent. Impact fees alleviate some of the cost burden but let's face it, taxes are inevitably going to have to increase for everybody. A lot of people don't understand that if they want that new restaurant or that new specialty store to come to down that they will be paying for the infrastructure and impacts somehow. Any mayorial candidate that claims that he/she can lower taxes, put money back in your pockets, and still solve the municipal debt issues is a liar.
ReplyDeleteAs for crime and policing powers in Salisbury, I must admit that we are a little better now (in the manpower field) than we were 2 to 3years ago. SPD is a young police department that should prove to have some longevity. In addition, Mike Lewis has done a great job over at the Sheriff's office. He might be a big spender over there, but atleast he knows how to get the funds and distribute them where needed.
While policing can always use upgrades, no matter where you reside, the real problem lies within the Judicial system. Like the guy said in the 7:59 am post, people are getting off with PBJ and light fines for drugs and weapons charges. Drug dealers are making a good living off of destroying our streets and the court system is basically saying its legal to do so. Let's lock some of these scrubs up or did we waste the money on the detention center for it to be empty? Let's let a local cop get killed by one of these guys that got off easy for carrying a concealed weapon-I bet his/her family would be pretty upset at that judge for letting a potential murderer go...People carry guns for two reasons-to protect yourself and to kill...

Joe:
ReplyDeleteHave you not heard -- or don't you get it -- the Barrie-Bubba Comegys solution for saving Salisbury:
Dump millions of dollars into the North Prong area and drive the business there out of town.
No Knock is not the answer. It was not effective in the 60's and 70's. The effect it had was lawsuits, police brutality, violent retaliation, riots, killings of police, corruption. It wasn't effective then and it won't be effective now.
ReplyDeletePut a toll booth on route 13 and route 50.
ReplyDeleteput one on the by-pass to.
ReplyDelete"No-knock warrants" are a TERRIBLE idea..has anyone forgotten that a 90-something great-grandmother was gunned down in her own home by overzealous cops who LIED about probable cause to obtain one of these questionable warrants???
ReplyDeleteIs SPD or WCSO prepared for the potential consequences if they bust down some innocent homeowners door?At the least,a major lawsuit-or at the worst,a bloodbath.WOW.Lets just throw up a damn iron curtain at the borders of the US now-you thought Obama and his ideas was dangerous?Giving police UNLIMITED and UNCHECKED power is a recipe for disaster. You dangle a tasty carrot like forfeited property(which is REALLY what its all about) without the efforts of a real investigation or any concrete proof of criminal enterprise in front of some of these "supercops",well, they are going to do whatever it takes to break down doors in hopes of "finding" drugs with no real probable cause for doing so.Sorry but this just stinks and bad.Too bad the same effort isnt put into securing our borders and nailing pedophiles?I am more afraid of an unregulated, rogue police state than I am of a street criminal.
Right on 8:09! Too bad people are too stupid to grasp what you said.
ReplyDeleteQuestion: If property values have dropped to all time lows; why haven't property assessments dropped in kind? They seem to be able to come up with how many percent the values have dropped so it should be easy enough to reduce the assessments by the same percentage don't you think?
Yes they had that timed just perfect, O'Money O'Mally hiked our assessments up just before the bubble burst, raised sales tax and now he has slots. AND they want to tax us to catch crabs, license, tax it's all the same. O'Mally is soooooo far in my pocket he could scatch my kneecap if I let him. Got his cake and ate it to and now he wants some damn ice cream. @%&#%$&
ReplyDeleteNo knock warrants are not a complete solution. They have their time and place but are rarely needed and must be approved by a judge. The first problem is that the criminals must be put in jail for a substantial time for their crime, not slapped on the wrist and given endless continuances for a court date. All of the police agencies here do their job, no the judges need to do theirs!
