Come here little child, I have some candy for you!
While we were all raised to stay away from predators like that, just what do you think the County Council is doing to all the little children being taxed an amusement tax for team sports at the Crown Center in Fruitland.
Some Council Members called the proposal a "Bailout." I'm starting to see how it works now. You see, all you have to do is pass off a tax on children. You know, those kids UNDER 18 years old, because they have NO SAY. Come here little child, I have some candy for you.
The Wicomico County Council is actually considering charging the Hearne Family and the Crown Sports Center the back taxes and continue to tax them because the Amusement Tax the County receives is desperately needed in this very trying economy and even if it means punishing the children, they're going to do whatever it takes to gain back funds, even if it means taking from the children.
When I spoke with County Executive Rick Pollitt recently. he saw my speech on PAC 14 and firmly agreed 100% with my views and even suggested the Council look at that speech again because Albero was right on target and 100% correct.
My hope is that the Council allows public input at their next meeting and the Citizens have the opportunity to show their support in the relief of these taxes. Time will tell.
While I do not agree with it, a tax is a tax is a tax. Putting your personal affinity for the Hearne family aside here, they should not get a tax exemption. It is in the tax code, thus should be enforced. I do not agree with it, but it is what it is.
ReplyDeletethe kids arent being taxed, crown is being taxed...get a life
ReplyDeleteHearne is being taxed for providing a place for organized youth sports. Is the complex on Naylor Mill Road taxed? Is Cherokee lanes taxed for league bowling? Is Mitchells taxed for team karate events or the daycare services they provide?
ReplyDelete10:48, the answer is NO.

ReplyDeleteWhen a tax is unfair, it doesn't matter if it is on the books or not if it's being there is wrong in the first place. If you don't agree with it then why aren't you trying to get it removed? Obviously you don't disagree with it that much.
most people don't have a problem with taxes usless it involves them
ReplyDeletePeople are to passive. They also know that Politians will do what they want. Has anybody complained about their Property Taxes. No. Why not? We are paying Taxes on inflated property values that have reduced dramatically. My property has been devalued due to this financial crisis by 50,000. But my taxes have not been adjusted. Is this fair or am I being royally screwed by the Politians greed of money instead of them Governing with respect for the Tax Payer. This is the same concept as the tax they want to enforce on Bill Hearne. Politians will not work within a budget when they can revise the rules any time they want and raise taxes just about at will with the excuses of pity and not the truth.
ReplyDeleteIf you read the tax law, it seems to want to tax sports that are presented for entertaining a crowd, or presented as a show. It also mentions that if these are paid for as a la carte, it's an amusement. Paying for a game of golf is an example to be taxed. If yearly dues allow one to play golf as often as he liked, then it's not taxed.
ReplyDeleteIt just seems to me that the law was written before Crown's venue became what it is, and adjustments could be made on both sides to make things more clear.
For instance, Soccer leagues could practice using crown's equipment for a yearly fee per player, and avoid the tax. Likewise, tickets sold to soccer games and playoffs would be taxed.

Could just having to look at the Mare and her lacky's count as an amusement tax? I know I get a laugh which is amusement everytime I see or hear them!
ReplyDelete5:32, if tickets were sold, they would need to be taxed!!!!

This just makes no sense. Instead of trying to add some bs tax, the politicians should be trying to figure out how to help this kind of business. If this place succeeds it could draw in tons of revenue for the city/county.
ReplyDeleteNot many ice rinks around in this area. Get the college involved. Start a hockey league. That is alot of money being brought into the local economy and taxed.
The real problem it seems is that all the local politicians are morons who couldn't give a sh!te about any of us...much less our community. I mean an amusement tax, the name even sounds crazy.
Let's not forget what this building used to be. Crown cork and seal (sp?). Local gov ran them out of town too (more or less).
Perfect example of Love my Country (or local state/county/neighborhood), hate my government (local/state/federal gov). Do politicians want us to hate them or do they just really not care?

Make sure everyone understands the truth about this tax. This is a tax from the state!!!! This is not a new tax but one that has been in effect for years. The fact is that Crown either didn't know it was a tax or decided to attempt getting by without paying it. Please put the truth out there instead of blaming the local officials.
ReplyDeleteOK, Mr. M, or anonymous 8:06,
ReplyDeleteLet's talk about that tax.MOST of it goes to the County, not the State. Secondly, tell me another business of its kind that you know of that pays this tax for team sports in the County.
I'll bet you shut up now.
