New York City's teacher's union - the United Federation of Teachers - is suing to lift a ban on teachers wearing partisan political buttons at school. Their claim is that the ban violates teachers' right to free speech.
The rule sends "the wrong message to our students," UFT president Randi Weingarten said in a statement.
"We are just weeks away from a landmark presidential election that is being discussed in classrooms and at dinner tables across the nation," she said.
"Students can only benefit from being exposed to and engaged in a dialogue about current events, civic responsibilities and the political process."
All of this sounds lovely. If the members of the UFT were actually teaching Johnny to read, I would be far more impressed. Read More ...
The students cant vote so what's the difference?
ReplyDeleteThese radical activists don't think anyone else's opinion is worthy of consideration. Heck, they don't think anyone but themselves are even capable of thinking. Only THEY are endowed by such grand wisdom, they must educate all of us idiots. What a bunch of elitist A$$$s.

ReplyDeleteSome of those students can vote. But you are correct that this is not the point. The point is that libral groups like the UFT seem to believe that the only protected speech is liberal speech.
I am regularly dismayed by people's lack of memory. The "Free Speech movement" of the 1960's wanted to violate the rights of kids who wanted to learn by shutting down classes at some universities. The "political correctness movement" of the late '80's and '90's was about intimidating non-liberal speech by branding it as "intimidation".
In our public schools we have teachers wanting to force their political views on students.
(For purposes of disclosure, I am equally opposed to teachers forcing conservative views on students at any school)
Well GA, for purposes of objectivity, you shouldn't pigeon hole the teachers as being 100% liberal and only wanting to wear Obama pins as you did in your piece. Are you saying there are no conservative teachers in UTF? Not one single McCain supporter? Thats why people can't take you seriously. You are overtly biased...but it is what it is I guess.
ReplyDeleteNot a double standard. Conservatives can wear their buttons and t-shirts just as much as Liberals can.
ReplyDeleteThe corporate power devils that controll this once great nation want our children dump and stupid. All they care about is getting a credit card in their hands so they can turn a profit. When they cant stick it to a person anymore they want you to shrivel up and die, and they will move onto the next uneducated fool to use and abuse. The cycle continues while our childrens futures are destroyed.
ReplyDelete(Public schools are the baby sitters for the lower and lower middle class Americans children. Most of the well-to-do children have never seen the inside of a public school and they will never meet most of our children. The seperation of the American social classes starts young).
anon 9:57 I think you miss the point. It is against federal law for teachers to promote any candidate, liberasl or conservative. What the hell do you want? First our schools to start with then a short jump to having schools become like madras sas in Islamic Countries.
