About the time our original thirteen states adopted their new constitution in 1787, Alexander Tyler, a Scottish history professor at the University of Edinburgh , had this to say about the fall of the Athenian Republic some 2,000 years earlier:
A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government.'
A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury.'
From that moment on, the majority always vote for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.'
The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history, has been about 200 years'
During those 200 years, those nations always progressed through the following sequence:
1. From bondage to spiritual faith;
2. From spiritual faith to great courage;
3. From courage to liberty;
4. From liberty to abundance;
5. From abundance to complacency;(somewhere along here we loose our nationalism)
6. From complacency to apathy; (The USA is here in 2008 and is headed to #7)
7. From apathy to dependence;
8. From dependence back into bondage
Professor Joseph Olson of Hemline University School of Law, St. Paul, Minnesota , points out some interesting facts concerning the 2000 Presidential election:
Number of States won by: Democrats: 19 Republicans: 29
Square miles of land won by: Democrats: 580,000 Republicans: 2,427,000
Population of counties won by: Democrats: 127 million Republicans: 143 million
Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by: Democrats: 13.2 Republicans: 2.1
Professor Olson adds: 'In aggregate, the map of the territory Republicans won was mostly the land owned by the taxpaying citizens of this great country.
Democrat territory mostly encompassed those citizens living in government-owned tenements and living off various forms of government welfare...'
Olson believes the United States is now somewhere between the 'complacency and apathy' phase Tyler 's definition of democracy, with some forty percent of the nation's population already having reached the 'governmental dependency' phase.
If Congress grants amnesty and citizenship to twenty million criminal invaders called illegals and they vote, then we can say goodbye to the USA in fewer than five years.
If you are in favor of seeing the end to our country as we know it, then by all means, delete this message.
If you are not, then pass this along to help everyone realize just how much is at stake, knowing that apathy is the greatest danger to our freedom.
WE LIVE IN THE LAND OF THE FREE, ONLY BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE
Courage is a door that can only be opened from the inside.........
The USA is a Representative Republic, not a democracy. But it is fast going towards being a democracy, and the ills associated with it as was pointed out here.
ReplyDeleteThe electorial college and the reason why Bush was elected president in 2000 is the main reason why our founding fathers produced this method of electing our president. To prevent mob rule. There are many who propose to do away with this process, and make the US a direct democracy.
You can see what the results will be if this is allowed to happen.
I believe that soon the constitution will be hanging by only a thread -- literally destroyed by these tendancies.
In the end, it will only be the voices of good people who speak out that can save our country from this cancer.
Joe, I was getting back to my car yesterday, when all of a sudden this woman gets out of her car and start screaming OBAMA OBAMA. Wasn't sure it was me at first, but then I realised, heck she's screaming at me. Do you think it was my McCain bumper sticker???
ReplyDeleteIt didn't bother me, but I thought to myself is this what we can expect if Obama wins: In your face intimidation attempts? Pretty sad actually.
Democracy , as we have known it , will end if Obama is elected.
ReplyDeleteLook at our nations capital
and see what Marion Barry did to it. Google Marion Barry and start reading!!!

ReplyDeleteYell back at whoever next time , are you afraid? I'm not!!
Think about it , Obama is a very very very very brave man.
The way I see it is either we sit back, whine & Lament or we get out there & work to get our people elected.
ReplyDeleteI don't mean you Joe, because No One has stuck his neck out more than you. I am asking all your readers, WHAT ARE THEY DOING?????
anon 9:22 I personally have attended the fund raiser at the park of which I brought two of my three children. I feel it is important to teach our children how to think politically for themselves instead of having them brainwashed by the liberal education system. Remember children are our future so teach them well.
ReplyDeleteIt ended a long time ago, Its been a corporate controlled republic for decades.
ReplyDeleteIn 2004, voter turnout was 64%. Compare that to other industrialized democracies and you'll see how far behind Americans are.
ReplyDeleteApathy, yes.
Which is why I don't get why people are blaming Obama for the end of democracy. Isn't he inspiring many people to actually get involved in the political process? Isn't that what democracy is all about?
I don't get what's the fuss about direct democracy either. When the electoral college was established, getting everyone to vote wasn't either desirable nor practical. It is my impression that democracy is about getting everyone to vote, and have their vote count. With technology, can't we do just that?

ReplyDeleteFear was not a factor. Surprise, amusement, and then dismay were.
I simply wandered as I drove off wether this was a sign of things to come. And as you suggested i yell back, what would that lead to... because trut me I can yell!
Let's see
ReplyDeleteMarion Barry = Barrack Obama
therefore
George W. Bush = John McCain
I'm sorry, I just dont get the "logic" Try again.

ReplyDeleteMarion Barry destroyed DC. DC was the murder capital of the US under his administration (there is a reason the Bullets don't exist you know), the DC government is rampant with fraud (one person embezzled 80 million from the tax office), they couldn't pay their bills, contractors refused to work there, the school system was on brink absolute collapse, businesses moved to MD and VA, and DC has more welfare recipients per square mile than any other jurisdiction in the US.
The only thing you can blame Bush for is the war; in which a strong argument can be made that it is partially Clintons’ fault because he sat on his hands. And the economy which collapsed due to welfare of the mortgage industry pushed by Clinton.

ReplyDeleteI grew up in D.C. and voted for Carol Swartz.
No what I am saying is that you are equating one African American with another. That's just silly.
Marion Barry has nothing to do with Barrack Obama. I was just trying to be as silly as you were earler.
To try to lump together the two is desperate. To lump then together becuase they are both black is racist. And that is another post on this page.
I just don't get what people think the Clinton Administration has to do with TODAY!!! My God! Get over it you Clinton haters!
ReplyDeleteClinton was in office almost EIGHT years ago!!!!
Seems the same people who hate/hated the Clintons also hate Obama....hmmm...go figure.
Must be Republicans! They hate everybody who they can't or haven't brainwashed.
I agree our country is in real trouble.
ReplyDeleteI think which ever candidate wins this election, we will be in even deeper trouble.
The BEST we can hope for is for McCain to win and have a Democrat controlled Congress so they have to reach across the aisle.
If Obama wins, and we have a Democrat controlled Congress, you ain't seen spending yet like you will see then!
The only other option of course is if Obama wins and Democrats lose their control of the Congress (which I don't believe will happen).
Still doesn't make me feel any better about voting for either one!
Democracy ended a while ago. Tugging apart the system are:
ReplyDelete* Gerrymandering (Political districts created to protect the ruling party)
* 2 party political duopoly (why can there almost never be an effective third party candidate)
* Ineffective immigration law enforcement (destroys our national identity)
* Ineffective voter law enforcement (destroys the will of the people without the people even realizing it - Diebold, anybody)
* Large media conglomerates with an obvious agenda
* Too much political influence from large corporations
* Pansy congress which gives away it's responsibilities all the time
* Over zealous executive branch who thinks that anything is legal so long as it "thinks it to be so" and can hide the truth
* Judicial branch that thinks it's job is to make laws, rather than compare the situation to the constitution
* Government as a whole in the midst of a power grab taking away your civil liberties
I am young, educated, successful, and scared sh!tless of the current situation. This country, in the past 20 years that I can actively remember, has been sliding downhill quickly and will likely implode soon. For the past year, I've been actively researching other countries so that when the time comes I can (relatively) quickly emigrate to a more stable, free place in which to live.

ReplyDeleteOne word, Revolt; coming to a town near you.
YO! Anon 9:41am!!! - The voter turnout in 2004 was nowhere near as high as 64%! I bet it was closer to 6.4%!! Get your facts straight!!!!
ReplyDeleteYo!!! Anon 6:00pm- I agree with you!
