As a practicing Addictions Counselor and Wor-Wic Alumni, I am offended! What about teaching students about consequences? How can he honestly look his students in the eye and speak to them about proper professional behavior?
I can't believe that. If I was a student or teacher I would be DEMANDING my money back or a new teacher...preferrably one who doesn't have a pending DWI and criminal charges. I don't think that is too much to ask. Has he been reported to the State for this? If not I think he should!
And, as if him actually still being in the classroom isn't enough to make you scream, he's actually making light of it to the students? If thats true, he needs to be fired immediately.
They can't fire him until he is found guilty!! Remember Innocence UNTIL proven guilty!! I agree that he can't affectively do his job, but they can't fire him.
I don't know the incident at hand, but what I would comment on is what happened to innocent until proven guilty? Let's fire everyone who is picked up or accused of a crime. I'm guessing there'd be a lot of job openings!
How politically correct we are...but would you want your tuition money going to him with these "pending charges." I don't think you would want your child to be educated on what he thinks is moral and just behavior. You can't get licensed in this state with these character flaws. I personally don't think it's funny that he risked the lives of many visitors to this area last weekend. So what about the difference between pending charges and convictions. I am sure if we went to the Public Safety Building in Ocean City we would see definite damage to a vehicle that wasn't there before Joe Weker got into.
I think we should be sensitive to. And realize if you are a good ole boy around salisbury you can do what the hell you want. Especially if you are a teacher or a cop and if you are a fire fighter well ,even -------- so quit crying and go vote for that asshole john mc cain.
ok kennedy... however, the pending charge is one that indicates he is not in the position to perform his job effectively. he needs to either voluntarily take a leave of absence or be forced to leave until the court proceedings are finalized. probably will find himself with a suspended license. also, i believe he needs to notify the Board that he has an arrest and pending DUI. if you were paying for a college to educate your child wouldn't you want someone who is effective. drunk one day and in class the next teaching chemical dependency counseling...doesn't make sense.
Yeah, he has not been proven guilty of anything yet. Maybe it really wasn't him behind the wheel and maybe it was his evil long lost twin brother that did the damage to the police car in the drunkin rampage. Inocent until proven guilty.
I know that he was joking about his arrest in class because one of his students told me. Suck on that for a while. Quit apologizing for him and GET REAL.
I know at least one of the 2:19s is NOT Mr. Weker. But I am supportive of the rights of ALL those who may face court in the NEAR FUTURE while their alleged charges are just that; not yet formal. proven convictions...
Those that are perfect among you cast the first stone. I don't know the person here but I would hope that if I made a mistake that I could be forgiven, learn from it, and move on. Funny how now a days as soon as you do something everyone wants to throw you on the chopping block. Those living in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.
hey New guy "Not to mention a DUI is not an offense that is serious enough to end someone's career. Come on now lets be realistic." actually when you are a licensed addiction counselor that is exactly what will happen. let's not forget this guy taught one day about how to effectively treat addicts and the next he is driving bloody drunk and then kicks out the window of a patrol car. and New guy, the defendent went into a classroom of students and began the class with "most of you didn't know me until last weekend..haha." Nice way to defend himself. but your right innocent until proven guilty. i am so glad he is taking his responsibility so serious. i think you should take his class, "Driving Drunk with Joe"
Traditionally , all employment in Maryland is "At Will Employment". An at- will employee could be fired for a good reason, or for any reason. This theory still exists in Maryland today. He can be fired or replaced by someone who they feel is more qualified . Joe Weker should be fired now!!! This school will suffer long term.
4:05. If you have a phone/internet access, and are being defamed/terminated without just evidence-by a school allegedly having deep pockets (despite what you think on the surface about the "at-will" employment doctrine), you have a lawyer (BTW...comparing me to Kennedy is only encouraging me to become more incorrigible). He may end up being found as guilty as hell-that is for the finders of facts, but are YOU judgment proof enough to risk walking the walk here yourself REDNECK IDIOT!! ****Mobile home wheels are a depreciating item and are not counted as appreciating assets.
I am sure Wor Wic Directors would like to be rid of this disgrace. I also think it was wrong for the media to force them into the spot light over one of their instructors. If any one here that keeps saying fire this guy footed all of their legal bills for firing him they would probably do it. Fact is we do live in a state that would let this p.o.s. sue them for firing him. It has been said many times before though that the best advisers in addictions are the addicts themselves. We also live in Wicomico county the best place in Maryland to commit a crime and get away with it.
Do what the Wicomico County Board of Ed. does when a teacher is accused of an offense. Keep them on the payroll but in a job where they do not have contact with students. Of course, sitting at the Staff Development Center doing nothing for months and getting full salary should be considered a crime in itself.
He also kicked out the side window of a cop car and it took 4 Officers to get him under control. He also tried pulling away after the Officer stopped him.
Look, I firmly agree that he is innocent until proven guilty. However, he was not at all cooperative and should be setting examples.
Having known Joe for several years, I can assure you that he is at this moment kicking back with a nice drink and LAUGHING at everyone. Wor-Wic brought him back, he has had no immediate consequences. By the time that he gets to court, everyone will have forgot. We need to let Wor-Wic know that we will not forget their cavalier attitude.
What did 6:37 (not me..just curious how other people could be so negative during happy hour on Friday) do, other than to offer an offer to chill (possibly have a chilly in your own home; as far as I know-still not against the law here in Cuba-Sounds like what I like to call it, well what is the term? Oh, yes, a GREAT friend or neighbor). You guys have got your priorities and "boogie-man-in-my closet" hatred focused in so so wrong places. You probably couldn't kick Bea Arthur's ass with a fist full of foiled knuckles! So so lame!!
Get your story straight. The brethilizer read .19, not 1.9. If you had any medical background whatsoever, you would know that 1.9 means DEAD. Get your story straight!!!
As a former high school teacher (now retired), I cannot imagine my being allowed to stand in front of a class after a DUI arrest. I would probably have been suspended with pay pending the outcome of a trial. Of course he shouldn't be fired until and unless he is found guilty, but neither should he be permitted to continue teaching.
HELLO!!!! What do some of you freakin people not get???? Can you really be that dense? He is an instructor of addictions counseling!!! It is unethical for a person who is getting drunk, getting arrested ect. to be teaching a class on addictions counseling (which he himself is in need of). I know Joe Weker and he is arrogant as hell and is loving all that he is getting away with. He joked with his class about how famous this has made him and how nobody in his class had probably not heard of him prior to his arrest and laughed his ass off. I think it is shameful that Wor-Wic is allowing him around students right now.
Joe Weker was a jackass when he first started teaching at Wor-Wic three years ago. He provides little to no help to the students and has extremly poor reviews from the students on ratemyprofessors.com and myspace.
What is sad is that the administrators and staff at Wor-Wic are perched on that damn hyphen in that perfect little teal box that they do not see what happens in the real world. They do not care about the students because they are growing so rapidly and every student is just a number. There primary focus here as of late has been to get that wonderful donation of a golf course up and running so it can make them so money. That school needs some negative publicity to wake up the proper people....
There are a few things I would like to address in this comment.
Firstly, as a secondary education major at Wor-Wic, I am aware that in the state of Maryland, as an educator, after a year and one day you receive tenure. Since Wor-Wic is a state funded institution, I am assuming that this is true for there as well. Therefore, the “fired for no reason” law may not apply here.
Secondly, as a past and present student of Joe Weker’s, I can tell you that he is NOT joking about this with his students. On the first day of class he told us the situation up front and confessed to the acts and told us that if we had any questions he would answer any and all. This incident has not affected his teaching abilities, so why should the current class I’m taking with him be approached differently then the classes I have taken with him in the past? Because he had a lapse in judgment? You must be crazy if you think he’s the first professional to make a wrong move (or perhaps even hypocritical?).
I don’t condone his actions and more importantly, neither does he. Get your facts straight before you begin making accusations. Joe Weker is a great teacher, contrary to previous comments, and this situation has no direct correlation to his skills or ability to educate.
How can one say a chemical counselor should be fired for getting a DUI charge when the field is mostly made up by recovering addicts.
Arrogant, Weker is, but he is Human just like everyone else. He is probably able to keep is job because he is informative about the information he is teaching
First of all, the field is not made up mostly of recovering addicts, and secondly, I work in the field and would AT LEAST be suspended for getting a DUI. But then, maybe my employer expects better decision making from it's employees than Wor-Wic does. I am so glad to hear that JOe is "informative about the information he teaches". You are an idiot.
As a current student of his I have first hand experience with him. First of all, I wouldnt say he was joking about his situation. He was just bringing it up in class to get it out in the open. He did so because he wanted to give anyone who was uncomfortable with it the chance to drop his class, and because he wanted his students to know what happened and not be going off gossip and hearsay. He is a good teacher and i would recommend him to a fellow student as a professor. He knows his material well and knows how to teach well (a trait not every professor has). I agree it was wrong and someone in his position should be held to a higher standard, but just because he is human does not mean we should crucify him.

ReplyDeleteI think all of us should be particularly sensitive this month between the very real difference between a pending charge, and a formal conviction.
ReplyDeletethey can suspend him until his case is resolved.
ReplyDeleteHey 2:19pm, or should I say JOE WEKER.
ReplyDeleteI don't know the incident at hand, but what I would comment on is what happened to innocent until proven guilty? Let's fire everyone who is picked up or accused of a crime. I'm guessing there'd be a lot of job openings!

Welcome to America Innocent until Proven Guilty!! How soon we forget!
ReplyDeleteNot to mention a DUI is not an offense that is serious enough to end someone's career. Come on now lets be realistic.
Lets not forget Wor Wic will be asking for public assist. for something this year.
ReplyDeleteI'd say what's good for Davis Ruark is good for Joe Weker.
ReplyDeletePerhaps he made a mistake?
ReplyDeleteHow do you know he is joking about his arrest?
ReplyDeleteYeah, he has not been proven guilty of anything yet. Maybe it really wasn't him behind the wheel and maybe it was his evil long lost twin brother that did the damage to the police car in the drunkin rampage. Inocent until proven guilty.
ReplyDeleteI know that he was joking about his arrest in class because one of his students told me. Suck on that for a while. Quit apologizing for him and GET REAL.

ReplyDelete"Alleged" P.O.S....Words are powerful (and potentially very costly) these days...all I am saying...Word up.
ReplyDeleteWhats wrong with having a drink or two. Plus hes not guilty yet. The stress of life permits gettin a little buzz. relax
