Help Wanted

I am a Manager for a company here in Salisbury, and I have trouble finding GOOD/DEPENDABLE employees here. My question is "why are people complaining that there are no jobs here on the Eastern Shore, but yet when you offer them an employment, no one seems to want to work" ? So were can I go to find 2 good/dependable employees that actually want to make some money? If there is a place to run an add that gets a lot of traffic, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. My # is 443-944-4891, must be 18 years of age, with drivers license, reliable transportation, and must be able to pass random drug testing! I know I am not the only one hurting to find quality employees.

They are inside the Perdue Innovation Center, by the DAILY TIMES, LOL. One a dish washer and one is the Sanitation of Cooking Machinery. By no means is this center like the processing plants. Hours are 11:30 PM to 8am. They will be working with high pressure houses at all times, hard hats are required, and Perfect attendance is a must. Must comply with USDA regulations.

If you're looking for work, 40 hours a week, here's an opportunity. Spread the word to someone looking for a job.

  1. Money is why! The jobs that are left on the shore are low pay jobs. The people expect you to work weird hours. For example one job ask me to stay at home except for 20 hours a week that i worked, JUST IN CASE THEY NEEDED ME. Just in case they needed me doesnt pay much. But if you pay someone enough to live you will probably have a good ,dependable employee.
If your business cannot afford to do this ,do like most eastern shore business does. HIRE A MEXICAN!

  2. Unfortunately the system has made it easier for people to sit home and get paid!! If you don't work, and keep having babies you can get more than if you work. Food Stamps, free milk, eggs, cheese, etc. Don't work, okay you don't have to pay your child support. You can be in arrears over $10,000.00 and what happens to you in Wicomico County, nothing!!!
If all the free programs were cut out, except for elderly and disabled, maybe people would go to work! I've had people turn down a job because they can get more on unemployment, so why work before it runs out. Wonderful mentality!
And the younger generation has had everything given to them so why should they work?
If you do get someone who will work they'll fail the drug and criminal test!!

  3. Anon 7:25--If you ever again have someone that you know is on unemployment turn down a job offer, report them to the office that administers unemployment. In most states, and I believe Maryland is one, those receiving unemployment benefits must be ACTIVELY seeking work, keep a record of where they have applied, and accept a sutiable job offering, or be able to justify why they turned it down. Otherwise, benefits may be stopped, and they may even have to pay back what they received! If more employers would report these people, there would be less fraud and employers taxes would be less. I am a former employee of a state unemployment office, and former fraud prosecuter!

  4. Anon 7:53 AM - You may be a former employee of a State Unemployment Office but don't you know that the way they seek employment is let their fingers do the walking through the yellow pages and/or purposely call/visit places they know for certain are not hiring. And like Anon 7:25 AM said, if they happen to find a job and get hired they can't pass the drug screening test.

  5. It does't matter how much you pay. Money is a short term motivator. I have two employees in the field and two in the office. The employees I have in the field do nice work.....but they have "issues". I have a mechanic and a younger laborer who is trying to learn a trade. I understand that a trade is something that isn't learned overnight - and I have to pay fof that. I pay him to stand and watch. I pay him to make mistakes and I pay the machanic to go over the younger guys work and train him to do it properly. It's the cost of doing business. I pay them pretty well. I offer health benefits (blue cross/care first) which neither take because they have to contribute some of thier own money.

One of my customers read my post on this blog about WIC. While we were talking about it, my mechanic overheard our conversation. I noticed that he was a bit standoffish for a period of time. Later I learned he and his girlfriend get WIC AND his girlfriend is applying for food stamps (they have two kids and live together). Now - he works for me AND he has a job waiting tables in the evening in OC (all year round). His girlfriend works as well. I find it hard to believe that they can't make ends meet. Especially when during one of our conversations he stated that he and his girlfriend took his kids to OC and spend $80.00 on a Saturday on pizza. How can it be OK to get free moey and go out and treat your kids to $80.00 worth of pizza and soda in OC. In essence, our tax dollars paid for that Saturday outting, Right? I mean....am I wrong here?

  8. Good morning , people.
This is my first day of being unemployed as my job was sent to China.

Work hours and tasks are not an issue for me but I will not apply for this job. I doubt very seriously your job is worth the gas to commute since you didn't mention wages.

I will not be collecting food stamps or WIC sitting down. Just as your government gave my former workplace a tax break to close down, your tax money will pay for my re-training and it likely won't be a local job.

I didn't ask for free trade. I didn't miss one day of work while I was employed and was late once, fifteen minutes. But my work ethic still wasn't worth it.

anon 7:25 I'm sure you've seen the slackers but you haven't seen the category I fit in. And I don't use drugs.

anon 7:00 I've worked alongside many kind hearted and hard working illegal aliens who were hired by Perdue knowing they were illegal. One day an IRS man showed up to check their social security numbers and overnight a dozen or so were let go and one was deported.

Unemployment made me a temporary victim not a bum.

  9. To receive any help from the gov. you should have to pass a drug test. I bet a lot less people would be collecting.

  10. Anon 8:15-yes, I know how they "look for work" and there is nothing wrong with using the yellow pages. Anon 7:25 said: "I've had people turn down a job because they can get more on unemployment, so why workbefore it runs out." That's what I was referring to in my comment at 7:53.
I have prosecuted people like this. Many people don't realize that you can work AND collect unemployment at the same time if the pay is lower than the unemployment plus 1/4 (or whatever the formula is now; I had to retire on disability years ago). And I have been on the other side of the coin and have collected unemployment too. BUT, I looked for work and did not turn down any suitable work. I did turn down one job that was above my skill level and too dangerous for someone with my health problems. Since it was not "suitable" work, I was not penalized, and I was honest in reproting it.

  11. You can draw SSI if you have a drug addiction. Pays more than unemployment and its lifetime. Don't get badly hurt on the job and try to draw SSI, they'll put you through hell trying to deter you. Just tell them you're a crackhead, you'll get a check and all the bennies that comes with it.

  13. Employers around here just dont value good employees-Good business management dictates if you find a loyal, honest worker capable of doing their job without you holding their hand telling them what to do,who you can rely on anytime, they have a work ethic and won't steal you blind then you retain them any way you can.On the Shore the attitiude seems to be "F--k em.They can be cheaply replaced".

  14. OH and Bob P. is absolutely correct about the job training-Many people do not realize this but when you are unemployed through no fault of your own, there are programs thru the State of Maryland that assist people in career training for new jobs. Some can receive grants to attend workforce training at community colleges.
