Hebron Fire Department

"Joe,

recently i was at the Hebron carnival and could not believe what i saw. I know several members there and while the carnivval was going on. Members were drinking beer out of pepsi cups. Some of the people in the french fry stand were just loud and obnoxious and reaked of alcohol. The kicker to this story is this. The fire whistle started blowing and the ones drinking took right off to answer the call which i heard was a structure fire in mardella. Is this the kind of stuff the fire departments are being criticized for? I am told that on any night you can walk behind the french fry stand and see them outside just having a party right in front of everyone with beer cans flying. I have lost a lot of respect for the people there and dont think my kids should be around the people drinking. Are the people running the rides doing the same as the ones in the french fry stand? I thought maybe you could look into this matter and let everyone know what really goes on up there. I wont give my name out, but i can assure you this is the gods honest truth...Also rumor has it they have their buddies from other fire departments up there drinking up a storm and riding the fire trucks.. Just please look into this matter for the sake of the community and kids at that carnival."

  1. Why wont you give your name ?
This stuff is good ole boy eastern shore stuff.
It is perfectly ok for firemen to be drunk on the job.
    Until they get into trouble.
Then it is good ole boy stuff again.
    They let em go.
NOw get with the program mister and dont spoil there drunkin fun.
Hell they posted here on this blog yesterday , that people here on the shore get 41 miles to the gallon on the alcohol they drink.

  2. I can tell you, first hand, it does go on...and has gone on for years. You should go inside the bingo stand! It has been the norm for as long as I can remember, and other "local" carnivals are just as bad.

  3. This is not a good thing. I really don't have a problem with reasonable drinking, BUT stay off that fire truck or fire scene! Joe, have at it. maybe a visit with the ole cameria.

  5. We all know where the only other "local" carnival is and I can tell you as a member that alcohol is not allowed on the premesis. Members have been released due to alcohol consumption on the carnival grounds...we can not control what they do before they come or after they leave

  7. The Fire Dept. isnt even hosting the carnival right now, I believe the Lions Club is hosting it. I can't say what someone saw or didnt see but if someone wants to have a few beers while making fries, then go ahead. But I agree, they should stay off the fire equipment.

  8. I would just like to add my 2 cents. These "holier than thou" people that are too cowardly to leave their name make me sick! I myself have paricipated in the Hebron Carnival since I was 9 years old both as a patron and a worker. I am fully aware of the alcohol consumption at these events. I do not drink at these events however I do not have a problem with others who choose to. Mr. Anonymous and others that may share his opinion should try to keep in mind that the people who VOLUNTEER their time for these events are normal people who work full time jobs, have families and households to maintain and countless other responsibilities. And still they manage to find an additional 4 to 5 hours a night for 4 to 6 days out of the week and kindness in their heart to DONOTE their time to these functions that have provided entertainment for kids and adults for more years than many of us have been on this earth! In my 30 years of participating in the Hebron Carnival, both as a patron and a volunteer, I have never witnessed or heard of an incident that was a direct or even remote result of any alcohol consumption. In addition I would like to add that I have 3 children that thoroughly enjoy the carnival and they and myself have always been treated with nothing but respect from the volunteers at the carnival. I consider myself a pretty good parent and if I thought for a second that my kids were being exposed to anything that would cause them detriment they would not be there! And to answer your very accusing question sir, NO the people who run the rides are NOT ones that choose to consume alcoholic beverages. Please keep in mind that along with your children being on those rides, the children of the volunteers are on those same rides. So whether you believe it or not there is a standard of responsibility and accountability that is maintained quite strictly. So you can just take your insinuation and shove it! Maybe Mr. Anonymous you should have a stiff drink (or stiff something...) and relax a little! And tell me, kind sir, how many hours have you donated for the good of your community!?!?!?!? and for the record my name is Crystal Helms and I'm not scared to say so!!!

  9. Im curious to know exactly when this happened. I dont remember a structure fire call for mardela in the last few weeks that would have been at the same time the carnival was running. The only one I remember them being hit for was scarborough, and I might be wrong, but I dont think that was while the carnival was running.

  10. We were at the Chincoteague Carnival last summer and when we asked a young man working there why so many of the kiddie rides were shut down he replied that the individuals who were supposed to be manning the rides in mere 4 hour shifts were not present because they had gotten too drunk that afternoon.I dont know if it was just a disgruntled member venting or what but it made an impression on me.

  11. If i had to guess when it happened, I was there saturday night and the fire whistle went off and several volunteers were RUNNING to the station next door. Only to return shortly after however. But if they were so intoxicated or whatever... then would they be able to RUN through crowds of people and not fall over? Their bodies seemed to be functioning properly to me. Remember some of these people probably sit back and enjoy a few beers often...so i doubt 1-2 would affect the french fry stand.

  12. OK I have had enough of all the critics out there. Yes the people cooking food at the Hebron Carnival, drink not all of them but some. Why shouldn't they be able to have a drink if they want after all they are donating their free time to cook in a hot and humid kitchen...The Bingo assistants should have the same courtesy. These volunteers for the most part are not the firemen/women that would be operating equipment. They are family and friends of fire dept. members. Lest we forget that while the carnival is operating another fire station usually comes and does stand by for Hebron/Sharptown. I am so sick of all the hypocrites out there. Yes I understand all organizations are suffering for membership because of people like you anonymous. Everyone is scared to crap sideways for fear of being sued! What a society we are creating for the next generation. I feel sorry for the children of tomorrow who are going to have nothing to do but be tethered to Mommy and Daddy because they might be exposed to "LIFE"

  15. It was saturday night. Westside FD was on standby. There was a reported structure fire in Mardela. Units cancelled I think it ended up being a shed on fire. There is no excuse for drinking any alcohol and getting on a piece of equipment.

  16. If these friggin people can't go that long without having a drink, then they're in rough shape. Seek help at AA IMMEDIATELY! You people are Alchies!

  17. A good example for the children to see drunk adults operating in a job that should have some respectability. Now we know why some children make bad choices regarding their behavior.

  18. WEll I think when kids are going to ride rides then know body should be drinking. How would they like it if someone came and picked up their children and was driving them down the street and something happened to them, its the samething as what is going on at the fair grounds grown people that have our children in there hands while riding their rides. I think something should be done about this. And I will sign my mane to this TINA WHITTINGTON.
