The Daily Times ran a Front Page Article about Katie Weisner getting married and not being able to afford a new home. They're asking as wedding gifts for cash because they can't afford a down payment on a home and they're currently renting. Below is the Weisner Official Website Information. I'll leave the rest up to comments.
About Weisner
Weisner Real Estate, Inc. is a company rich in Eastern Shore history and family participation. In the mid-1930's Raymond A. Weisner moved to Salisbury from New York and began Deer's Head Realty Corporation, a property holding company. In the 1940's Raymond started his own real estate brokerage business, known as Raymond A Weisner Real Estate. Vic Stephens became a partner in the 60's, and the name of the company was changed to Stephens-Weisner Real Estate. When Raymond passed away in 1971, Vic took over full control of both companies. Raymond's nephew Michael came down in 1974 and took over management of Deer's Head Realty, becoming a licensed real estate agent and liquidating the company at the request of the trustees. In 1980, Mike received his real estate brokerage license and opened his own real estate brokerage company, Michael C Weisner Real Estate. His new company managed many houses owned by out-of-state relatives, and in 1994 the company went through a name change this time becoming Weisner Real Estate, Inc.
Michael Weisner is the president of the company, and is deeply involved with the Salisbury community. Having called Salisbury home for almost 30 years, he takes a personal interest in the changes the city has experienced over the years, and is involved in many community organizations; he is treasurer for Salisbury Area Property Owners Association, president of the Colonial Village Condo Association, active member of his church, president of Eastern Shore Hospice Foundation, and was a 6 year member of the Wicomico Library board of trustees. Mike has gained years of experience managing his company, and runs it in a manner that is both fair and trustworthy for his tenants.
Katie Weisner is Mike Weisner's daughter, and has been involved in the family business off and on since 1999. Initially a secretary, she has worked her way through the office and spent 3 years as the Account Manager. She recently stepped into new shoes as the Property Manager, and is in charge of handling rent, dealing with problems, and approving new tenants. She is also now a licensed Realtor, and can help you buy or sell your home Kristi Beauchamp is the new Account Manager, and is responsible for all Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable. She has been with the company since 2004, and works part time as she goes through school.

I know Joe, I thought the same thing when I read their "sob" story! At first I was not sure if her father was the Weisner "Tycoon"...but then put two and two together. I cant believe they made the front page!
ReplyDeleteI went a lot of years with out a nice house....lived very frugal for many years to save for a house! They are living the dream world and need to realize this is how the real world is. Many people have lived in rentals to save up for a home. To ask for money for a wedding gift to "finance" their dream home is pretty poor taste!
One thing I can't understand is that they say they cannot afford a home in their price range because they can't save enough money for a down payment. They attribute their inability to save to the high rent they pay, but they are renting from Weisner's grandmother. I think the Times should have searched a little harder for a couple with hardships rather than a Weisner!
ReplyDelete"Could Katie Weisner Be The Same "Join Our Family" Weisner Properties?"
ReplyDeleteFTFA: "'I thought I’d be able to save up and buy my own house in a year or two, but it kept getting farther out of reach,' said Weisner, who works at her family’s firm, Weisner Real Estate."
Good lord, do any of you have any reading comprehension skills?
Why doesn't she just rent from Daddy until they save enough for a down payment?
ReplyDeleteI agree. My husband and I are trying to save. Maybe we should renew our vows and ask for money to finance our home. (Just being sarcastic)
ReplyDeleteThe article said she was a member of the Weisner Real Estate family. I'm sure she's paying high priced rent - not.
ReplyDeleteThis young woman has to be kidding? Asking for money to pay for her dream house as she gets married is way beyond reason. Let old dad, take care of this problem for his daughter. My six daughters all bought their own homes on their own and we are proud of them for stepping up to the plate!
ReplyDeleteA. Goetz
Royalty must live like royalty. That includes a very nice house, expensive car and fashion clothes. Please support Salisbury's royal family.
ReplyDeleteLet her ask the former developers of the old mall site for some of the TIF money to buy a house! She and her fiance' must have taken lessons from the mare. What a scam!
ReplyDeleteNot only are they in the Real Estate business, but they are slum lords in the rental business as well. If things are that bad for her why doesn't daddy give her one of the rentals around Smith Street as a wedding present to live in. What a Joke this story was!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Joe, once again, for uncovering another of the Daily Times' gambits. A very sympathetic piece. We all feel very badly that the families of real estate speculators cannot afford to buy their own product.
ReplyDeleteI'll have real problems sleeping tonight.
Which governmental officials approved these unaffordable projects anyway? Let's name names, including planning commissions and staff members.
To think that "this" is what the Daily Times would call journalism.

ReplyDeleteWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAA....
ReplyDelete"Poor little rich girl"
Daddy took the T-bird away, right?
I cant believe the Daily Times is this hard up for a front page story about the Weisner gal! Michael Weisner must have paid the Daily Times some sort of kickback! I would rather read about the ponies of
ReplyDeleteAssateague than read such a soap opera, Poor little rich girl!
Amen to A. Goetz! Sounds like you raised your six daughters the right way instead of looking for
ReplyDeleteHand outs from others. If I would receive an inviation requesting money for a dream home, I would probably have to send an "empty" card, And forget about attending the wedding! Her Daddy did not raise her very well to even "ask" for money! Is the real estate market in THAT bad of shape?
Also notice how the Daily Times always parades the resident genius from SU out to comment on local economics. This guy is rarely, if ever, critical of the Powers That Be.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know where this "strength" of the local economy is, if we exclude the local hospital, university and government workers?
Perhaps that IS the economy, here as well as nationally.
I saw this article on the web but chose not to read it...I thought it was tacky just from the headline. There are lots of programs out there, still, that allow people with good credit an opportunity to become homeowners. I'm not sure I know anyone who started out with their "dream", most of us start out with something more modest and work our way up into better, then onto best.
ReplyDeleteNot even addressing the family connection, this was TACK-EEE.
SHAME ON THE DT FOR ENDORSING THIS.
The DAILY TIMES does not believe in marriage or in the old morality of America. They chose 2 people shacking up for their front page story. Young people read this and assume that this is what you are supposed to do .Most people believe what they see and read in the newspaper. It's like the story the little girl asked about --Is there a real Santa Claus? And of course it had to be in Sunday's paper for me to read after returning home from church.I assume atheists must operate the Daily Times. They can't operate the presses either. What am I to do Joe?
ReplyDeleteTacky-tacky-tacky!
ReplyDeleteIf they cannot pay rent and save for a down payment, then closing costs, insurance, taxes, furnishings, utilities, maintenance and mortgage should be a snap once they get that down payment gift!
Oh please!
Learn to enjoy renting!
tackytackytacky...
This is a very interesting little article! Wow the nerve of some folks!
ReplyDeleteSnippet from the article:
"Since 2000, the cost of renting in Wicomico County has skyrocketed nearly 50 percent. In 2000, the median rent was $567. By 2006, it jumped to $834, according to the U.S. Census. The same data shows nearly three out of five county renters pay about $750 or more per month."
Okay, I live in Waldorf and my 22 year old daughter cannot afford to even RENT a place around here. She lives with us part time and at her boyfriend's mother's house part time. In fact all of my daughter's friends who are still living in Waldorf, live with their parents. None of them can afford a place of their own.
I WISH there was an apartment they could rent for $800 a month. Rents in Waldorf (not even in the lux places like Katie was complaining about) start around $950 and go up from there!
My husband and I couldn't afford to buy a house until we were in our mid-thirties and had been working since we were teens. Even when we bought our house, it sure wasn't the house we wanted! We has to "settle" for something that we could afford.
I try not to judge, but it sure is hard when these folks are sitting in a HOUSE that their grandmother lets them rent (is their granny gouging them? it sounds like she is the way they are couching it) and complaining!
I know it's tough. I have been there. I know it's not easy to scrape together savings. I don't see any mention of kids in the article either - so they are two working professionals without children?
I dunno, seems like a sort of high-class problem to me.
I agree, I have a very hard time feeling sorry for these two as well. The story failed to mention that the groom to be's father is the Dean of the Henson School of Technology at SU.
ReplyDeleteDidn't she stop to think how poorly this would reflect on the family business??
actually the grooms father is the Provost of SU. I have heard that the groom does have a pretty bad problem with DUI's...
ReplyDeleteI just love the "important"headlines of this town.Too bad,so sad!
ReplyDeleteLook at the nice leather furniture in the photo and the antique round dinner table in the background. These two shacker-upers must think people are stupid.Their furniture is better than mine.
ReplyDeleteWell boo hoo, poor little rich girl. Why doesn't she just go out
ReplyDeleteon the street corner with a tin cup and beg for money like the homeless do. I came out of a divorce about seven years ago with nothing, just the clothes on my back and two more trash bags full of clothes. My present wife came out of her divorce about the same time with twenty thousand dollars worth od bills. We both started over with nothing. But thanks to hard work by both of us we bought a house twoo years ago when prices were at an all time high. If we can do that in our late forties, poor little rich girl and her fiancee can do it also. It is called WORK. That is the only way to get what you want and a little hard work never killed anybody. By
the way the old man Raymond Weisner
was one of Salisbury's few millionaires back in the day. He owned half of Salisbury and lived well into his nineties. He also helped a lot of people get started by selling them land or houses at a
fair price. So I don't feel sorry for poor little rich girl get another job and work for what you want.
The "shacking up" aspect really is irrelevant to the point of all of this.
ReplyDeleteI happen to think it's ridiculous to go into a "forever" contract with somebody who you've never had sex with or lived with - to see how compatible you are. So that point is moot to me.
I do however think it's pretty stinky for this working couple to complain about not having their dream house yet - well JOIN THE CLUB FOLKS! When did people start waking up after graduating school and expecting a perfect little house be just waiting for them that they feel entitled to? This sense of entitlement is the most frustrating part - especially to folks who have earned everything with hard work.
i know mike weisner and he is a very good man.... maybe he has decided to teach his children to fish, rather than just give them a fish.... thats how i treated my kids, and they are doing fine....
ReplyDeleteExactly what sort of moral fiber and self-suffeciency are these folks showing in this article?
ReplyDeleteIt reminds me of a line from the movie Soul Man - the one where the actor who is white pretends to be black so he can get a scholarship. Anyway, before he resorted to those measures he called for student aid. The girl on the phone at the call center told him (and I'm paraphrasing here):
"I'm sorry but we can't give you the money. This program is for student's whose parents are poor, not for student's parents are assholes."
Hardy har-har. Of course I'm not saying that's the case here because I don't really know and it doesn't matter to me how fine a person Katie's dad is - I just don't like this whiney article.
Funny how you can have so much to say about people you don't even know! You assume Katie doesn't know the meaning of work. I've known Katie since middle school. She worked part-time or full-time all through high school. She worked all through college to pay her bills and maintain her grades and scholarships and extra curricular activities. Just because dad may have money doesn't mean she has her hands in daddy's pockets. She's driven the same car as long as she's had her license (which she pay's for!!) NONE of you know anything about her or anything she may have gone through in her life! Did anyone think that maybe as a member of the Real Estate community she wanted to comment on the difficulty of purchasing a home, maybe to comment on the difficulties that people face in this economy. As a close personal friend never have I known Katie to have her "hand out" or to beg for anything...
ReplyDeleteI love that the heading on this page is about an "unbiased" source of information... so far all I've read is a bunch of uninformed ignorance!! Open the doors of your life and let people judge you!!
