For the second day, Salisbury citizens were treated to more whining and foolish babbling by two members of Mayor Barrie Tilghman's "council leadership". What was initially amusing has become a source of pity for those of us who aren't governed by this local brain trust.
It seems that Salisbury council members Gary Comegys and Shanie Shields are upset because the two council members who consistently listen to the citizens of Salisbury are reaching out and willing to interact with the folks who do the working, the living, and (unfortunately) the dying in Barrieland. Councilwomen Debbie Campbell and Terry Cohen have printed a newsletter, set up a website, and (sin of all sins) are going to actually meet with the great unwashed and listen to what they have to say.
Comegys is right! Those two women should be publicly flogged!
Of course Comegys would NEVER do anything like that. When he takes time to meet with citizens, he meets with the people who REALLY COUNT, like special interest groups. Voters shouldn't forget his now infamous meeting at the Fountains with area developers. Comegys and (then Council President) Mike Dunn didn't invite the public. No, that's a waste of time. Of course we should never forget Dunn's last comments to the Camden Neighborhood Association - "We won, you lost, now get over it!" This typifies the feelings of the now defunct "Dream Team" towards those that actually live in Salisbury.
I wonder if there are any audio or video records of that meeting?
Shields, for once, poses an interesting question - "Why won't they (Campbell and Cohen) reach out to the rest of the council?" I think that the answer is quite clear. How do you "reach out" to people who's minds are already made up? The "nouveau Dream Team" (NDT) of Comegys, Shields and Louise Smith are merely a rubber stamp for the Empress of Barrieland. The "council leadership" has rarely failed to give Tilghman exactly what she asks for. On the few occasions where the Mayor was routed it has only been because Campbell and Cohen have forced the NDT to publicly own their actions. The Mayor's 10% Water and Sewer rate increase is a case in point.
I have only one criticism of Daily Times reporter Greg Latshaw's coverage of this matter. He should have asked Shields if she feels that the newsletter produced by Wicomico County Councilwoman Sheree Sample-Hughes, as well as her quarterly constituent service meetings, should be criticized as decisively as the actions of Campbell and Cohen. Of course the answer would be no! Why? Because Shields is a hypocrite of the highest order.
Many, if not the vast majority, of Wicomico citizens respect Mrs. Sample-Hughes for her efforts to communicate and reach out to her constituents. Talk to people in her district, black or white. They appreciate the job she does and her efforts on their behalf.
Yet for some bizarre reason, meeting and communicating with constituents somehow becomes "evil" upon crossing the Barrieland borders? Of course, what can we expect?

Sir:
ReplyDeleteComegys should let his pal Lynn Cathcart take the lead on this -- she really knows how to whine in public about Ms. Campbell and Ms. Cohen.
So I called the Daily Times because I am furious about the comments from NotNuts referring to Debbie and Terry as "C"'s and "B"'s. "Brian" 410 749 7171extension 226, does NOT think that the "C" word, you know rhymes with punt is particularly offensive, certainly not worth any admonishment to NotNuts. However they did slap ComeHere for his linking to the blog site. I asked how he would like his wife being referred to as a "C" . It is not relevant, this is America with freedom of speech etc. But you can't post a link to a website? It is absolutely despicable that a commenter refers to any female this way.
ReplyDeleteCato: Your still on target in my thinking. Mr. "C" and Ms. Shields are both total closed minds when it comes to ethics for the citizens of this town and have no right to question the rights of the two fine ladies (Debbie & Terry) to meet with their constituants! You would think Mr. "C" would be able to understand that, at least!
ReplyDeleteA. Goetz
Art,
ReplyDeletereferring to your reference to Mr."C"...
Good one!
