James M. Benett Is On The Ball!

We are very aware of it and I will share with you the information that
I have and that I have shared with the staff:

The rumors and the text messages are swirling. Let me tell you what is
happening so you can address individual student concerns.

There is a rumor that there is going to be a shooting tomorrow.

1. This rumor originated at Delmar HS when a student who was bullied
threatened a "Virginia Tech". That student was withdrawn and then
enrolled in Wi-Hi. He does not have access to weapons and his parents
and the BOE, as well as Wi-Hi admin are working to ensure a smooth
transition. He made a huge mistake and is truly remorseful.

2. A student at Delmar text a student at Wi-Hi about the statement and
it has spread like wildfire.

3. Now the rumor has morphed into a shooting at JMB and/or a shooting
at Parkside. I have also heard the bomb threat version.

We are actively talking to students who think they have credible
information. We take every student seriously and so far today - it all
goes back to #1 (see above). We are talking to parents who are calling
since their child has text them and telling them exactly what I have
shared with you. We have increased SRO presence today and will continue
to have it at dismissal.

If you have a student that has information and needs to talk to
administration, please feel free to send them down and be discreet so
they are not afraid of retaliation.

Thank you for contacting us and please feel free to share this with any
concerned parents who ask.

  1. Your right to stay on top of this, but it does look like the youngsters have found a way out of school for a day. However, you can never be sure these days, so best to get it controlled now rather than after a shooting.

  2. Yeah, the possibility is there and if the rumor is true the students lives are being threatened. We need not run that risk.
