I know many of you are waiting to hear about what happened at the Planning & Zoning Meeting this afternoon. I'm going to give you the quick version. Capitol Investments was tables for the third time and it looks like these guys have pretty much run out of air.
As for the Hearne/Orchards Property, the Board passed their changes and they will move forward with 8 conditions. I'm going to stop there and wait for the Daily Times to come out with their article tomorrow because I believe they are going to throw a Comegys Twist to the entire thing and if they do so I'm sitting pretty with information to blast away at them.
I also expect the Daily Times to go after me for what I had to say in the meeting but we'll see what happens in the morning. Could be a fun day tomorrow!
Joe, by your comments it shows you stand with the developers, you have no clue how this project will and does affect the residents in this area. You are not a resident, even though you own property in the vacinity. The council (excluding Mrs. Bartkovich) is blind and deaf. Notice, the members voting in favor have students in their neighborhood and want them out! Mrs. B. travels S. Div. every day and knows what our gripes are. I'd like to see this occur in your backyard

ReplyDeleteThere's no question we're all not going to agree on everything. However, please remember I attended this meeting as well as weekly and biweekly and monthly meetings all over the City & County. I put in more effort to attend these meetings than anyone else I know.
My post in the morning will clearly show how I feel about this issue but I'll give you a slight hint. YOU voted for certain Council Members and you got what you voted for. You can't blame me simply because I agree with the "LAW" and what can and can't go in that zoned area. YOU need to blame Dunn, Comegys, Cathcart & Shields and NEVER forget Campbell tried making sure the proper language was in place and they voted her down trying to protect YOU 4 to 1! More in the morning.
would really like to know your feelings on the Hearn prperty... I think its a great place for student housing. You have the assholes over in the Camden area crying because of students, this would help. Its close to the school, and I really dont think traffic would be a major problem as I believe many students ride bikes. I believe its a good thing to let the student housing there.

Once again we must revisit the fact that the property was annexed under the condition that it was to be 55 and over. It's quite possible that it wouldn't have been annexed at all under the current plan.
ReplyDeleteAs Joe pointed out we got what our representatives created when they didn't allow the criteria to be more specific, Debbie Campbell did try to have the language worded to assure the neighbors got what was intended in to be built at the time of annexation.

Not in my backyard because I live in Pittsville. Not sure what your point is here. It is a great place to put student housing and get them out of the residential ares that people are complaining about.
The school is growing and students have to live somewhere. Its close, they can bike, and is away from most niehborhoods.
If not approved the University will try and go after the city to condem houses in the area to build housing and dorms.
Like it or not this is a college town, and students need housing.

ReplyDeleteNo.. you need to think about it... it is becoming a college town. It used to be a small college and now has outgrown their property. They have now put buildings on their parking lots where I used to park when I went there. they are building left and right and running out of room.

I am just giving my perspective. It is a grat place for student housing in a town that the college is growing. If you cant see that than you really are an old fart. For me it really isn't about the students, that is a logical area.
ReplyDeleteMy gripe is that Debbie Campbell tried to make annexation agreements more specific and the majority shot her down and not even one second the motion to allow her to present her plan.
If the University doesn't step up to the plate to assist with student housing Salisbury will always be 80% rentals and reduce the value of homes that now pay 80% more in their tax assessments after the recent hike.
As a resident of the Eirean Mhor Subdivision, I believe that this new development is going to take a huge toll on all of the residents in the area. We already have a ton of traffic issues. Dykes Road is already backed up in the morning from the buses, now you want to add over 1,000 more cars into the mix. You say that the students take bikes, I can assure you that a lot of these students drive to school. You can see them all coming in and out of the student housing development on Milford. Traffic is not the only concern. If you look on the police department web site at the crime in the area (around Eirean Mhor), you'll notice that a lot of the crime done in our area is in the student housing locations. So now we are bringing that into our neighborhood. You say about getting the students out of the houses over on Camden, so what, you just drop them into our neighborhood, that's not fair either. If you wanted this to be a college town, it should have been sectioned off like most college towns are, not stick student housing with residential housing. Hindsight 20/20, I guess. It's just not fair. Why couldn't they leave it as it was supposed to be, a retirement community. Or how about more single family homes.

This is not good planning, despite it being a "good location" for students. Tell that to the folks who have put 25-45 years of their lives into their homes and neighborhoods over there.

The vast majority of students "invest" in Salisbury for 4 years. And not to the degree these folks have.
This isn't a slam on the U. or the kids.
But the reality of Salisbury is, welcome the new and to hell with the old. You know, the ones that made this an attractive place for the U. to be in the first place.
"Many" students bicycle? What movie have you been watching out there in Pittsville, Jim? The U. isn't building another parking garage because so many of the kids bike.
I'm glad there will be more housing for the kids, but I remember the "promises" from the developers. I can still recall the council carrying on, the Debbie Campbell bashing, the protest, the nights the lights went out in GOBeorgia, and the pounding of Dream Team rubber stamps. Welcome to the circus that is Salisbury.
Good planning, my a$$.
