A very easy way to tell is to look at fixed structures that have been in the water for 50 years or more. Look at the residue left behind from rising and ebbing tides......Those marks haven't moved an inch. They know this because divers regularly are checking out the pilings on the Bay Bridge. Especially the east bound one. When the bridge over the Sassafras river was replaced in the mid 80's the water level in the river as the exact same as it had been in 1917 when the original bridge was built. Satellite imagery tells us the ocean surfaces are the same level they were almost a 1000 years ago. It is happening all over the place. Remember the rain across the bay last year? It washed out a 200 year old town's foundations. I forget the name of the town . . . but it was a huge rain in one day. There are a lot of these events happening in the middle of the Country - in the Mississippi River valley.
