A Viewer Writes: John Phoebus Hit & Run

John Phoebus, attorney with Anthenelli, Phoebus, and Hickman (from Crisfield MD) was involved in an accident Friday night around 7pm. Mr. Phoebus was (allegedly) drunk and crossed the center line and hit a car. He did not stop and fled the scene. A car following behind him saw the accident and followed Mr. Phoebus. He parked his car behind a brick building next to Circle Inn restaurant and was seen running on Jacksonville Road in Crisfield, MD .

The cops went to his place of residence where he resides with his mother. His mother was questioned and she told law enforcement he was not home.

An attorney from Easton, MD, representing Mr. Phoebus, contacted the Somerset County Sheriffs Dept. and he was advised to have his client, Mr. Phoebus turn himself in. Will Mr. Phoebus do the right thing, or will he think he is "above the law?"

Sheriff Mike Lewis To Encourage Deputies & Citizens To Arm Themselves At Church

This week, I’ve been prompted to meet with local church leaders in an effort to better protect our congregations and our communities from future attacks. We’ve only just begun. In the weeks ahead, the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office will be hosting a comprehensive training session for all our regional churches. We wish to open this training session to our business communities as well. A date and time will be announced in the near future.

We have a duty and responsibility to protect our greatest assets; our people. Our goal is to provide instruction on how to respond in the event of a mass shooting in your church or your business. Do you have a plan? Do you have an SOP in place. We want to identify key people within our churches who we can provide assistance in this area.

While I’ve always advocated for off-duty deputies and police officers to be suitably armed, many choose not to carry off-duty because it is a tremendous responsibility to carry an off-duty weapon every day. I realize that first-hand.

However, from this day forward, every off-duty cop should be ARMED at all times. And, that includes church service on Sunday morning. My heart is heavy just thinking about carrying my gun in church. But, from this day forward I will be armed, and I won’t hesitate to protect those around me.

For those men and women with Maryland concealed carry permits, if you’re authorized to carry it, carry it! Don’t become a statistic. Protect yourselves!!! Be vigilant! Maintain situational awareness. Your LIFE and the LIVES of your loved ones depend on it.

A Viewer Writes: Parkside Suicide

Good morning Joe,

I've never written to you before but I'm outraged at the latest "shenanigans" of the WCBOE. Apparently a young Parkside student took her life recently and they denied a moment of silence in her memory. I'm appalled and disgusted at how far they have allowed bullying to go. What will it take for a zero tolerance policy to be put into place? I can't tell you the number of parents I've spoken to who have attempted to go to the board with bullying issues only to be told nothing can be done. This is a disgrace and an outrage. Something needs to be done NOW before more lives are lost!

Signed,

A concerned Wicomico County resident

Attorney John Phoebus Posts His Side Of Incident

5 hrs · Crisfield ·

This weekend, I was charged with several traffic citations, the most serious of which charged me with failing to remain at the scene of an automobile accident and provide insurance information to the other driver. This occurred on Friday evening.

Although I initially and incorrectly perceived that this was a private matter, after further reflection, I realized that it was wrong for me to leave. Through counsel, I worked with law enforcement over the weekend to provide them with the necessary information and I have personally accepted the traffic citations that were issued to me.

Danica Roem of Virginia to be first openly transgender person elected, seated in a U.S. statehouse

Virginia’s most socially conservative state lawmaker was ousted from office Tuesday by Danica Roem, a Democrat who will be one of the nation’s first openly transgender elected officials and who embodies much of what Del. Robert G. Marshall fought against in Richmond.

The race focused on traffic and other local issues in suburban Prince William County but also exposed the nation’s fault lines over gender identity. It pitted a 33-year-old former journalist who began her physical gender transition four years ago against a 13-term incumbent who called himself Virginia’s “chief homophobe” and earlier this year introduced a “bathroom bill” that died in committee.

“Discrimination is a disqualifier,” a jubilant Roem said Tuesday night as her margin of victory became clear. “This is about the people of the 13th District disregarding fear tactics, disregarding phobias . . . where we celebrate you because of who you are, not despite it.”

Marshall, 73, who refused to debate Roem and referred to her with male pronouns, declined an interview request but posted a concession message on Facebook.

Another Business Bites the Dust!

The corner of College Avenue and Route 13 is darker as once again, a business closes permanently. How's that for progress? Most business analysts on Wall Street would say this looks like a big fail for Salisbury's local leadership.

Could it be the college driving away the businesses across from the campus or is it local leaders not paying attention to the business owners in town.

How many businesses have to close in Salisbury before voters realize the city is inhospitable to business? How many will have to close before people wake up and realize their elected officials are not working for them but against them?

Granted, fast food restaurants are not generally lifelong, career-building job creators, but they do employ people in our city and now 15-20-some people who used to work at the south-side Arby's get to claim unemployment.

It's a shame when you think about the employees who now look for a new job in the ever-shrinking work options in Salisbury. Of course, owners of these businesses can't be the sole reason for these closings. However, it seems awfully suspicious being right across the street from a well-staffed and well-attended university, fast food restaurants are dropping like dead flies.

Note the signage seen in the image above states the Arby's has been in this locale for 47 years. That's a lifetime for some and yet, here they are closing and referring patrons to Ward Street - a location on the fringes of the hood where no one dares to venture after nightfall.

Remember, it wasn't that long ago when Wendy's closed up shop, there as long as the Arby's, leaving more unemployed scrambling for jobs. Also don't forget about Radio Shack and Plaza Tapatia.

Even for those who don't like Arby's offerings, this is a stunning loss to the South Salisbury Boulevard community and should not go without notice.

What's next? Will it be Burger King, Hardee's, Taco Bell or Dunkin Donuts?

Guess time will tell, but for not... once again, another business bites the dust.

Thank you, Jake Day... you're doing a splendid job!

Salisbury's Liberal Mayor, Spend, Spend Spend The Taxpayers Money

It's Transformational Thursday, and we're getting into the holiday spirit! Check out the pic of our wonderful Field Operations crews assembling the City's new Christmas tree for the Winter Wonderland light display in the Park! The second pic gives you an idea of what it will look like completely assembled!

This tree will be located next to the Bandstand, right up against the river. It's going to be a stunner! Check it out at the Christmas Market and Lighting Ceremony for the Winter Wonderland displays on Saturday, November 25th!

Publishers Notes: I'm sorry, did the City start charging money to visit Winter Wonderland of Lights? Did they hold a fundraiser to afford such a display? Or did Jake Day just go out and spend taxpayer money because he's such a Christian and God told him this was a necessity and the peasants won't mind.

Be here Sunday Ladies & Gentlemen because the articles we will deliver will forever rock everyone's world.

DC Council takes step towards placing statue of Marion Barry in front of Wilson Building

WASHINGTON (ABC7) — The DC Council has taken a large step towards placing a statue of former Mayor Marion Barry in front of its home.

In a meeting Tuesday, the DC Council Committee of the Whole voted unanimously to a measure that would advance the possibility of adding a statue dedicated to the late mayor in front of the Wilson Building.

The matter was not actually passed today, Council Chairman Phil Mendelson said because someone forgot to publish it in the city register, as required by law. Mendelson said it is now on the Consent Agenda of non-controversial items that will be passed all together with one vote in the next council session.

That session could come in as little as two weeks.

Statement from Wicomico County Public Schools Following Death of Student:

The Wicomico County Public School System works to support all students as they grow and learn. We are deeply saddened when a student’s life is cut short. We grieve along with the family, friends, Parkside High and Pittsville Elementary and Middle schools, and the community at the loss last weekend of a ninth-grade Parkside student who died by what is presumed to be suicide.

The schools, with support from the school system, have responded to this heartbreaking loss with counseling services, compassion, and a willingness to listen. The school the student was attending, Parkside High, has been in close contact with the student’s mother since this tragic event occurred, and she has expressed her appreciation for the school’s communications to parents. She has also stated her agreement with the school’s decision not to hold a moment of silence. While the celebration of the student’s life will be held at the Pittsville Volunteer Fire Department from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, both schools were willing to serve as a setting for services.

Parkside is striving to balance many requests for remembrance with respect for the wishes of the family and other concerns, including the welfare of the entire school community. On Monday, friends who wished to have a special setting at the lunch table to remember their former classmate were supported in doing so. Many friends wore T-shirts personalized with the student’s picture, while students and staff throughout Parkside showed solidarity by wearing green. While some have suggested a moment of silence would be appropriate, many experts in the field of student suicide prevention and response recommend against a school sponsoring memorial or commemorative activities immediately after a student’s death. The National Center for School Crisis and Bereavement, for example, states that a more effective focus for a school after a student suicide is supporting the development of meaningful, thoughtful activities after the immediate crisis; this may be more therapeutic for students and staff. Parkside will work to honor and remember this student, while respecting the wishes of the family.

Efforts to provide support will continue to take place in this difficult time. Please know that the doors of the school administration, teachers and counseling staff of Parkside High School and Pittsville Elementary and Middle School will remain open to those who may need support.

Salisbury Zoo To Receive Yet Another Bear With Major Health Problems

With the Salisbury Zoo staff in Ecuador to pick up an andean bear and once again they are accepting  the bottom of the bottom when it comes to animals and their having major issues. So why does this matter, because YOU are paying a TON OF MONEY to the association you should've never been a part of in the first place. Then, when you need an animal they deliver you CRAP.

The last bear had massive mental issues and would rub his body all day and night against a concrete wall. The Zoo had to give the bear very expensive medication multiple times a day.

While I was not able to capture the best images above, this bear has bald spots on its neck and back. I'm telling you Folks, the Salisbury leadership constantly makes a joke out of each and every one of you. Between 5,000 dead animals at the Zoo that was covered up for many years, now they're paying millions of dollars to participate to get accredited by an organization designed to work with massive Zoo's, not the smallest free Zoo in America. This organization places demands on how you must build buildings and exhibits, all of which are a joke for such a small Zoo.
Remember this sign from the last bear?
And who can forget this deer in the Salisbury Zoo?

Wicomico County Councilman & Salisbury Resident Deals With Theft And Salisbury Maryland Police Department

Larry W. Dodd was feeling disappointed.
5 hrs ·

ted across the next chain link fence heading towards Phillips Avenue. I debated a minute and then called the Salisbury Police. The dispatcher wasn't pleasant to deal with. I told her I just got back from the hospital after 4 days and can't meet with anyone. She first said then can do extra patrol checks since no crime was committed. I said wait, someone climbs my fence, grabs my bike and throws it into the neighbors yard(vacant house for a couple of years) and then climbs back over my fence but that isn't a crime? I said someone jumped my fence 2 months ago and stole my daughters bike and it may have been them. I gave them enough information that hopefully they started someone in that direction to find someone that matches the description. She put me on hold for a little while then comes back and says something like if you can't meet with us then we can't file a report. I thought it wasn't a crime? Again I said Ma'am I just got out of the hospital and I am resting while on medications. I did not witness it, my neighbor across the street sitting in his van did. I let her know who I was and that I was going to contact the chief. I am so upset with her attitude that it's hard to fall back asleep. For the most part the Salisbury PD with it's chief is an excellent department, but occasionally there are some that makes you question why they were hired. Going back to bed to get my much needed rest.

AG JEFF SESSIONS SUGGESTS PROSECUTIONS FOR MARIJUANA GROWERS, SELLERS AND USERS IN LEGALIZED STATES

Attorney General Jeff Sessions suggested that the Department of Justice may crack down on people who grow and sell marijuana, even in the 29 states that legalized the plant, echoing the drawn-out argument that it is still against federal law.

Sessions made the non-surprising comments on conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt’s show after Hewitt asked whether the Department of Justice (DOJ) would be prosecuting marijuana growers and dispensaries for being criminal enterprises under RICO.

“A lot of states are just simply breaking the law and a lot of money is being made and banked,” Hewitt said to Sessions of marijuana growers and sellers. “One Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations prosecution of one producer and the banks that service them would shut this all down. Is such a prosecution going to happen?”

Sessions told Hewitt that he didn’t think “one RICO prosecution would be quite as effective as that,” but said he doesn’t think states that legalized the drug had the right to ignore current federal laws that ban the sale of marijuana.

“I do not believe there’s any argument that because a state legalizes marijuana, that the federal law against marijuana is no longer in existence,” Sessions said. “I do believe that the federal laws clearly are in effect in all 50 states and we will do our best to enforce the laws as we’re required to do so.”

Millennials would rather live in socialist or communist nation than under capitalism: Poll

‘This troubling turn highlights widespread historical illiteracy in American society’

A majority of millennials would prefer to live in a socialist, communist or fascist nation rather than a capitalistic one, according to a new poll.

In the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation’s “Annual Report on US Attitudes toward Socialism,” 58 percent of the up-and-coming generation opted for one of the three systems, compared to 42 percent who said they were in favor of capitalism.

The most popular socioeconomic order was socialism with 44 percent support. Communism and fascism received 7 percent support each.

Marion Smith, executive director of the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation, said the report shows millennials are “increasingly turning away from capitalism and toward socialism and even communism as a viable alternative.”

“This troubling turn highlights widespread historical illiteracy in American society regarding socialism and the systemic failure of our education system to teach students about the genocide, destruction, and misery caused by communism since the Bolshevik Revolution one hundred years ago,” Mr. Smith said in a statement.

Millennials are more likely to prefer socialism and communism than the rest of the country. Fifty-nine percent of all respondents chose capitalism as their preferred arrangement, compared to 34 percent who said socialism, 4 percent fascism and 3 percent communism.

Who Owns The Mayor & City Council, The Local Media Does, That's Who

No matter which way you look at it, this deal is corrupt inside and out. I mean, who remembers the City changing the legislation from the original contract of sale stating any usage must be arts & entertainment to, well, anything you want, all at taxpayers expense. No one remembers that happening!

The City and County spend millions of dollars in advertising and it is now extremely evident that one hand is washing the other. Keep in mind as well Folks, the City continues to GIVE the Daily Times huge tax breaks, even though they continue to downsize employees and they do not print the newspaper here.

Just the Good Ol' Boys slapping you right in the face, right out in the open.

A Viewer Writes: WBOC 16-2 Antenna TV

Yesterday the new WBOC Spanish channel appeared on my TV and 16-2 Antenna TV (old shows such as Bewitched, Newhart, Hazel, etc.) disappeared. I tried the channel search but cannot get 16-2. I emailed and called WBOC but they have not given me any satisfactory answers. I receive 16, 16-2 (I did receive it), Fox 21, 28, 47-1, 47-2, 47-3 and the 32(Escape, Grit etc.) channels from 47 -- all by outside antenna. I live in Nanticoke and they tried to say that 16-2 has been moved and perhaps I am out of range. I think this has happened to others. I know one person on Rockawalkin Rd. near Rt. 50 who also cannot get it. I'm not interested in the Spanish channel but I do want 16-2 back. I would like to know if any of your readers have this problem and if so they should start calling WBOC. Joe, perhaps you could look into it.

A Viewer Writes: Peninsula Eye Center

Anyone have problems obtaining a copy of eye prescriptions. My contact specialist changed my contact prescription and stated he cannot give me an eyeglass prescription. I would have to go back to my Ophthalmologist and make another appointment. Both doctors work for Peninsula and are across the hall from each other. Saw both at approximately the same time - dry eyes. Would it be that difficult to work out. Or are they looking for more money for another visit.

NFL Unhappy With Tax Reform Proposals that Takes Away Billions in Sports Stadium Subsidies

The NFL is not a big fan of recent Republican tax reform proposals that cancel the billions that teams get in tax subsidies to build and operate sports stadiums across the country, a report says.

The tax proposal would eliminate the big tax breaks cities and states receive on money borrowed to build stadiums meant to entice or prevent sports franchises from moving to another city.

“The proposed tax bill would target the tax exemption on municipal bonds,” Pro Football Talk wrote, “and those bonds have become a key piece of the $750 million in public funding that will build a new stadium for the Raiders in Las Vegas.”

But the tax reform idea does not sit well with the National Football League, according to Pro Football Talk.

“We believe that the construction of new stadiums and renovations of stadiums are economic drivers in local communities,” said NFL spokesman Joe Lockhart. “If the idea is to promote economic growth, this would be a step backwards.”

Eric Holder blasts 'orange man' Trump: 'We want the America of Barack Obama'

Former Attorney General Eric Holder says he is glad to be unshackled from his old job because employment with the National Democratic Redistricting Committee lets him lash out at Republicans like “orange man” President Trump.

Politico recently went on the road with the NDRC’s chairman in Virginia for get-out-the-vote efforts on behalf of Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam, the Democratic nominee for Virginia governor.

An interview at Rising Mount Zion Baptist Church in Richmond covered everything from NDRC’s efforts to raise over $30 million for gubernatorial races to Mr. Trump’s alleged role in empowering “neo-Nazis and white nationalists.”

“You don’t do politics when you’re attorney general, but as a private citizen and as a defender of the Obama legacy, I’m free to say what I want and to say it in the way that I’d like to,” Mr. Holder told the website for an “Off Message” podcast titled “Eric Holder Is Tired of Being Polite.”

“I probably would not have [attacked Republicans like] that while I was attorney general,” he continued. “I didn’t have an orange man who I was serving under, but, I mean, I would not have said that about a former president, for instance, while I was attorney general. But now, I’m just a citizen and I’ve got the full range of my voice back.”

John McCain Confirms: Tax Reform Is "DOA In The Senate"

It’s official: The Republican tax reform bill is dead on arrival in the Senate now that John McCain has become the third Republican senator to confirm that he plans to vote against it.

What’s worse for the Trump administration, McCain reportedly wants the bill to receive input from both parties – a criticism that he cited as his reason for voting against the Trump administration’s plan to repeal and replace Obamacare. This is particularly problematic because there’s approximately zero chance that any Democratic lawmakers will break ranks to vote with Republicans, despite President Donald Trump repeatedly saying that he expects to win a modicum of bipartisan support.

McCain reportedly confirmed that the bill in its current form is effectively DOA during an interview with Fox Business’s Charlie Gasparino.

Both Bush Presidents Lash Out At Trump, GHW Confirms He Voted For Hillary

The fading Republican establishment remains unable to reconcile its ongoing collapse, and continues to scapegoat Donald Trump for all the GOP's troubles instead of looking in the mirror.

Two weeks after an outraged George W. Bush lashed out at Trump, accusing him of emboldening "bigotry and white supremacy", on Saturday we learn just how deep the animosity toward Trump runs within the extended Bush household. In a new book to be released this month from historian Mark Updegrove, titled "The Last Republicans", and previewed on Saturday by the NYT and CNN, former President George H.W. Bush said he considers Trump a “blowhard,” only interested in feeding his own "ego." Meanwhile, his son, former President George W. Bush, thinks Trump fans public anger and came to office without any understanding of the job.

Spanking children increases their risk of depression

Spanking naughty children increases their risk of depression and becoming hooked on illegal drugs, a new study confirms.

Researchers also found the violent practice leaves a lasting impact on youngsters and makes them more likely to become suicidal.

The findings, based on data from 8,300 adults, has prompted calls for spanking to be considered as bad for children taken through a divorce.

Scientists now stress it is important to crack down on harsh parenting in order to prevent children from being consigned to 'the blues'.

The Air Force failed to enter the Texas gunman's domestic assault charge into a database that would have prevented him from buying a gun

A day after a gunman massacred parishioners in a small Texas church, the Air Force admitted on Monday that it had failed to enter the man’s domestic violence court-martial into a federal database that could have blocked him from buying the rifle he used to kill 26 people.

The conviction of the gunman, Devin P. Kelley, for domestic assault on his wife and infant stepson — he had cracked the child’s skull — should have stopped Mr. Kelley from legally purchasing the military-style rifle and three other guns he bought in the last four years. But that information was never entered by the Air Force into the federal database for background checks on gun purchasers, the service said.
