Rockville Confederate Statue Removed

The nearly 13-ton statue will be installed at a private property in Dickerson later this week

The Confederate statue that stood next to the Red Brick Courthouse in Rockville for more than 100 years was removed Saturday and is set to be installed in a more private location later this week.

The 13-ton statue will be installed near White’s Ferry, the privately run ferry in Dickerson that connects Montgomery County across the Potomac River with Leesburg, Virginia, according to county officials.

The county didn’t provide advance notice of the move because similar Confederate statue removals across the country have generated backlash and protests, according to General Services Director David Dise.

Dise told Montgomery Community Media the county “wanted to be particularly careful” to keep the move date quiet to prevent possible incidents.

The statue was lifted by a crane and loaded onto a large flatbed truck to be moved to the ferry location. The county paid $100,000 to have the statue removed, according to county spokesman Patrick Lacefield.

But Harriet Tubman can have a federally funded memorial

What a bunch of cowards! The Confederate soldiers deserved to be honored! The war was more about states rights and govt tyranny than slavery.

It will take a couple of decades but one day the people of Rockville will be viewed as book burners and prohibition hystericals during the progressive era. They will be seen as people who not only didn't value the area's history and all the lessons learned, but also the ones who tried to exert Big Brother tactics to suppress citizens no better than the slave owners they claim to hate so much. History has a funny way of airing out all the rats and marking them negatively long after they're gone and unable to defend themselves and their actions. They must be so proud.

It doesn't matter how many statues they take down, it won't erase the fact that Maryland had slaves during the Colonial and Civil War Eras. Their removals are futile. You can't sedate that which you hate.

so wrong to ERASE our history; the good, bad and the ugly...BIG MISTAKE. Ignorance feeds on ignorance.

Harriet Tubman is hero while the confederate were traitors fighting to defending slavery.

What states rights exactly?

Why is there no mention of a court decision on this? Did I miss it or is the court denying involvement for fear of having their family members threatened? If I missed it please excuse me,but I saw everything BUT ais court decision. Why in Gods name would anyone arbitrarily move something like this without a court order? Judges and courts need to be held accountable & own up to their decisions. Some innocent person could get killed over this.

$100,000 of assuaged black animosity and white guilt?

"What states rights exactly?"

Why, the right to own slaves, of course.

Some people like to claim that this is about "heritage not hate". Unfortunately, it is a heritage OF hate.

Wow $100,000.00 for a crane and flat bed just to move one item?
Somebody made some good $$$$$
And again paid for by the tax payers

The Civil War was more about the North wanting to take over trade in the South. Confederate soldiers deserve the same recognition as Harriet Tubman.

Our world has gone batsh*t crazy.....

I suffer from neither black animosity or white guilt. $100,000 dollars wasted. History cannot and should not be done away with. I have taught my daughter all about the Civil War, since the public school system hasn't done such a good job of it.

What's the truth then? Anone fighting on the side to defend slavery do not need to be honored

This is an atrocity no Civil War statue should have ever been removed. You can't change history in our minds. Wonder if school books have deleted all Civil War facts, it is racist to change history. There is more than one race, and they fought and died in that war too. I wish Trump would put an end to all this. We have black history month when are going to have white history month or Mexican or other?

Some people will do anything so that they wont have to look in the mirror and liberals will keep making up excuses for them in return for votes.

Harriett Tubman was black 12:14. That is the reason for all the hoopla about her. The only reason period

One more reason to keep that sign about Gen. Winder at the courthouse in Salisbury.

What is the price of political correctness? It's immeasurable.
One day the American Civil War and "The South" will be only footnotes in a barely appreciated and selectively accurately recounted history.

I guess the Talbot courthouse is next. The statue in Rockville had so many trees planted around it,(deliberately),that it was obscured from view.If you didn't know it was there you would never known it was there.Sad.

I grew up 5 miles from Whites Ferry. There are many families in the area that are the descendants of Confederate soldiers. Much of the population of Maryland supported the South, which was why Federal troops occupied the state.

I have family still in that area. Still some nice places in the area but the majority of it has turned to crap. High taxes, traffic is horrible and most people you can't understand if you need help in a store. Monkey County is turning into Baltimore all due to the liberal policies.

"What's the truth then? Anone fighting on the side to defend slavery do not need to be honored"

As the saying goes, "You don't want the truth." I don't expect you to understand this, but the civil war was a conflict over constitutional interpretation. Slavery was a catalyst - one of many. Very few combatants, on either side, were fighting over slavery. The vast majority of confederates were NOT slave-owners, and the vast majority of Union soldiers were not fighting to 'free' anyone. And many union officers were, themselves, slaveholders - and legally retained their slaves after the Emancipation Proclamation.

You really should read a little - true history is much more interesting than the crap you're spoon-fed in school.
