With new technology like pagers, scanners and cell phones, are these obnoxious and extremely loud sirens necessary any longer for fire and or ambulance calls?
They are necessary. I've lived 2 blocks from the Delmar fire dept for 25 years and it doesn't bother me a bit. It also lets the public know how often their first responders are needed.
11:56, Can't we use the ODDS of what you suggest might happen compared to Gary Comegys talking about the odds of the draw bridge being up if the new station 16 gets a call?
That being said, I would agree with you, however, with this exception. How about IF the network is down they can in fact use the sirens.
How many people live close enough to the first department to HEAR the siren? Many rely on their pagers. If you can sleep through a pager the sire will not wake you up. Those pagers are loud!
Wrong! The siren has awakened me on many occasions when my pager did not. Also, if Im outside cutting the grass, I never hear my pager but always hear the siren.
They are extremley annoying and wake people up at all times at night they all have cells, pagers, telephones but the clueless people at dispatch dont use these first they blast the sirens its actually a game the dispatchers play to piss off people trust me i know lol.
You're ignorant. Dispatcher's go by protocol. And use the siren when they are required to do so. And I don't trust you because you have no idea what the SOP's are.
Listen to the cry babies about the sirens. These sirens alert the public. As well as the volunteers, and responders, who risk their lives to save yours. Next time you move, don't move near a fire siren.
They do not sound for the first not the second alert for an EMS call unless there was an automatic medical assist alerted as well. They are sounded for the third alert if the ambulance has not marked up as responding. Each EMS alert is 2min apart.
Bs i listen to a scanner when they go off a umit will get assigned the call and the damn alerts still go off ,what they are doing is they dont want the county ambulace going to the job so they CONTINUE the sirens.
The sirens are as obsolete at the Post Office. Other than a few lone VFD's who uses a siren? Many people today have A/C with windows shut and few people would hear a siren anyway.
That "fire" siren can save many, many lives when it sounds for an emergency like a tornado. It's not just about fire and ambulance calls to first responders. It is an emergency notification system for the public within earshot, as well, and that may be more important than just alerting volunteers to the need for their assistance.
These are necessary, not only alerts the first responders, but also the community that there may be emergency vehicles responding near this area. I agree with 11:56 and 12:17. 8:07 is also correct.
Yes, the networks can go down, you sleep through the call, the battery dies. All sorts of reasons to keep a loud backup running.
ReplyDeleteYeah ok.
DeleteThis is because of the good ole boy ff wanting to show off GET RID OF THESE.

ReplyDeleteRead the post it says for fire and ambulance emergencies.
It wouldn't be so bad during the day but when they ring a few times a night because no one is responding it gets annoying!
There is absolutely no reason why people in the next town should be able to hear a fire whistle. They are just too loud.
100% Correct
DeleteThey are only sounded for fires, not ambulance calls.
ReplyDeleteIt is activated on the third alert of an ambulance call in the county.
Delete3:43
ReplyDeleteThat is a lie. They may not ring as long for an ambulance call but they do ring!
Dorkchester md they ring 9 Times for a stupid ambulance call.

ReplyDeletePost 9/11, the DHS has been having FD's reactivate and repair fire sirens. even offering grants to help pay for it..

ReplyDeleteWell Pittsville must get a lot of third alerts! The siren just went off one round only.
Vote to get rid of them.
