A Letter To The Editor

Joe,

Yesterday afternoon on my way home from work, I received a call that my uncle, who works with me, had overturned his vehicle on Route 54 in Delaware. Thankfully my uncle was unhurt in the wreck. As soon as I got the call I headed towards where the accident was. Upon arrival I expected to see the police and fire company to be there. But to my amazement they were not. Fortunately a few other drivers had stopped to check on my uncle and were also directing traffic. I do not know these peoples names but I would like to thank those people for their help. So after I checked on my uncle and made sure he was ok, I also helped direct traffic while waiting for emergency personnel to show up. Amazingly we had to call 911 back to see if they were on their way. the response we got was that the police were very busy, nothing about the fire department was mentioned. Finally, about an hour after the accident, DELDOT showed up to help direct traffic. However it was about 80-90 minutes after the accident that a Delaware State trooper showed up. The fire department never showed. When the officer came over to ask my uncle questions, instead of asking how he was, the officer demanded to know who me, my father, and another coworker were and why we were still at the scene. This seemed like an absurd question because we were directing traffic until someone showed up. The officer then began talking to my uncle about the accident. Understandably, my uncle questioned the officer as to why it took an hour and a half for someone to show up and why the fire department wasn't there. My uncle also mentioned that he was lucky he wasn't seriously hurt because he would have bled out by the time someone got there. After my uncle said this, the officer became somewhat irate and told him that if he had a problem with how long it took, my uncle could contact command and complain. He then very arrogantly said he didn't appreciate the questions that were being asked of him and didn't like my uncle's tone. Correct me if I am wrong, but wouldn't anyone be irate after they had just flipped their vehicle and it took emergency responders that long to respond?????? Anyways the accident scene was cleared and we were waiting on the officer to hand back the insurance information when he decided to write my uncle a ticket for driving unsafely. The crazy thing is that he was driving the speed limit....Well my uncle then asked the officer even if he was half dead in the hospital would he write him a ticket to which the officer responded yes....This blows me away considering some officers let politicians and their friends drive off without a DUI. So needless to say I am very disappointed and angry at the Delaware State Police.

On another note, some completely arrogant jerk decided that when we had traffic stopped that he was better than everyone else and he deserved to pass everyone in line and try to go by the accident. As soon as I saw him I told him to stop and wait a minute. This is what the DELDOT employee told us to do while he was moving his truck. When I waved this guy on after a couple minutes he threw his hands up in disgust. He then stopped next to me and tell me that we were causing a bottleneck and he also began yelling profanities at me and my father and also insults about my weight. So after just seeing how close my uncle had came to dying I lost my temper and responded to him to step out of his truck if he had a problem. The spineless coward then drove off with nothing to say. I hope he reads this and realizes what a non-caring pompous jerk he was. Thanks for letting me rant.

DRUDGE: MICHELLE CAMPAIGNED INSIDE POLLING PLACE?

First lady Michelle Obama appears to have violated Illinois law -- when she engaged in political discussion at a polling place!

The drama began after Mrs. Obama stopped off at the Martin Luther King Center on the south side of Chicago to cast an early vote.

After finishing at the machine, Obama went back to the desk and handed in her voting key.

She let voters including electrician Dennis Campbell, 56, take some photos.

"She was telling me how important it was to vote to keep her husband's agenda going," Campbell said.

According to a pool reporter from the CHICAGO SUN-TIMES at the scene, the conversation took place INSIDE the voting center, not far from the booths.

Sheriff Michael A. Lewis Endorses Matt Maciarello For States Attorney

October 15, 2010

It is with great pleasure that I announce my full endorsement of Matt Maciarello in his candidacy for State’s Attorney for Wicomico County. I’ve come to know Matt well over the past several months, and I’m impressed with his dedication, his strong desire and his relentless determination to serve the citizens of Wicomico County. As a twenty-six year veteran of law enforcement, and as Sheriff of Wicomico County, I believe Matt Maciarello possesses the necessary skills to lead the Office of State’s Attorney, to effectively manage his resources, including personnel, and to become a very good trial attorney.

I have no doubt that Matt will continue to forge very close working relationships with all of the law enforcement agencies within Wicomico County. In truth, he has already promoted cooperation between agencies in different areas, including community policing. His honesty, his integrity and his hard work ethic are admirable traits worthy of recognition, and certainly making him a most desirable candidate.

Without a doubt, Matt Maciarello has my unequivocal support in his bid to become the next State’s Attorney for Wicomico County.

A Letter To The Editor

Joe,
I currently have my home phone and cell phone numbers on the telemarketing Do-Not-Call list.  This is good for telemarketing, but what about when there's an upcoming election?  I've received more phone calls late at night (some just after my kids have gone to sleep) in the past month than I ever did before I was on the Do-Not-Call list.  This is ridiculous.  I did not sign up for any of this and since they are non-profit, they can call whenever and however much they want?  I'm already sick of seeing all of the obnoxious campaign signs everywhere (and I mean everywhere.)  Not only that, but I get more campaign junk mail than I can literally go through.  I end up just throwing it out.  I consider myself an informed individual when it comes to politics and who I'm going to vote for (or vote against.)  But all of this just makes me sick to my stomach.  I cannot
imagine how much money is spent on campaigns.  Much more money than the elected official will ever make if elected.  There should be a limit on the amount of money they can spend in advertising and a limited time frame where they can put up signs and send out mailers.  Say, from Sept to election day, that would suit me fine.  So, my question is this.......I'm already on the Do-Not-Call registry for telemarketers, how do I get on the Do-Not-Call registry for voters to keep them from calling me at all hours of the day and night?  I DO NOT want to answer questions as to my voting preferences or views.  You will find them out on voting day.  Anyone else sick of the calls, mailers and signs?

GARY COMEGYS AND THE "UNFAIR TAX PLAN"

During the past few weeks we’ve heard huge hoopla about an ad that accused Andy Harris of supporting a new 23% federal sales tax – without stating that it would replace the federal income and other taxes under the so-called Fair Tax Plan that Dr. Harris favors. Subsequently, Frank Kratovil has tried to avoid criticism for approving that ad by shifting the focus of his attack ads to the Fair Tax Plan.

Meanwhile, Salisbury’s Gary Comegys is shilling for new City sales taxes on meals, electric power usage, telephone service and various other things – possibly even a "piggyback" income tax as well – that would not replace or reduce the City’s property tax or other sources of revenue. A really "unfair tax plan," and that’s putting it mildly.

Comegys didn’t conceive this scheme on his own – the minions of Maryland Municipal League (he’s the current president of that consortium of cities and towns) has come up with a plan to have more taxes paid to its members. Last summer, in a letter over Comegys’ signature, they asked each town and city to pass a resolution asking the Maryland Legislature to provide them with authority (enabling legislation) to impose a wide variety of taxes. But, the proposed resolution does not say that in so many words. Instead, it asks the General Assembly "to provide more diverse revenue raising authority to municipalities" by "significantly" broadening their "authority to raise own-source revenues." There’s no suggestion that the real purpose is to tax-tax-tax.

The plan has been largely unnoticed by the mainstream media and thus far most residents of towns such as Salisbury and Delmar – both of which have passed the resolution without significant public awareness – have no idea what may be coming as soon as next year if the members of the General Assembly who are elected this fall confer on the municipalities the power to tax whatever they wish.

The cleverly worded resolution conceals the fact that Comegys and his comrades want to extract more money from local residents and businesses – the real source of those "own-source revenues". This scam should remind you of the basis for another political ad that’s being run: "Hey, Bob, a fee is totally a tax" and "we didn’t raise taxes." – well, not yet. The scam being perpetrated by the Comegys crowd has at last been outted. And, fortunately there’s a chance to avoid this one before it matures by voting in the election this fall for General Assembly candidates who really mean "no new taxes" when they say it.

Even those who reside outside of a municipality should be diligent in voting this fall, and for good reason. If the towns and cities get approval in Annapolis to impose sales taxes on meals, electric and telephone bills, etc., is there any doubt that counties like Wicomico that have a solid property tax revenue cap would not be there asking for the same?

If Seth Mitchell Knocks On Your Door …

What happens if Seth Mitchell knocks on your door?  Well it might depend on whether or not you have a Matt Maciarello for State’s Attorney sign in your front yard.
We’ve been receiving reports for a while that Democrat Mitchell has a habit of knocking on doors with Maciarello signs and asking voters why.  Alright, that may show Mitchell to be a tad rough around the edges, but you would have to give him credit for chutzpah.
That was until the other day.  I spoke with an elderly lady who was literally grilled by a man she believed to be Mitchell:
Why did she have a Maciarello sign?
When the lady responded that her son-in-law was an acquaintance of Maciarello’s …
Who’s your son-in-law?
And the grilling continued. …
Bad form Mr. Mitchell!  Whether it was you (the description fit), or a surrogate, it’s bad form.  I don’t go through my neighborhood asking my neighbors why they have Seth Mitchell signs in their yards.  Well, actually, the only signs in my neighborhood for State’s Attorney candidates are Maciarello signs; but you get the point.
Maybe that explains why I’ve seen a few yards with signs for both candidates.  ????

Salisbury Fire Department To Participate In Princeton Avenue Block Party

The Salisbury Fire Department will be participating in a block party at the Princeton Avenue Service Center, Saturday, October 16th, from 10am-12pm. The block party is being sponsored by Allen Memorial Baptist Church. In conjunction with our recent Fire Prevention Week 2010 campaign, the Salisbury Fire Department will be handing out free smoke alarms and batteries to those in need, as long as supplies last.

Pastor Bruce Glisson, Pastor of Outreach at Allen Memorial Baptist Church, says, "I have assisted families who have been devastated by fires. I have seen what a difference a smoke alarm can make."

Approximately 65% of reported home fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke alarms at all or no functioning smoke alarms. Having a working smoke alarm cuts the chances of dying in a fire in half. The Salisbury Fire Department urges every home to have at least one working smoke alarm. Make sure your smoke alarm has working batteries by testing it at least once a month.

The Princeton Avenue Block Party is a free, family oriented event. The Princeton Avenue Service Center is located at 117 Princeton Avenue, Salisbury.

Schools Ban 'Boobies' Cancer Bracelet

'A lot of kids don't want to do pink ribbons,' nonprofit says

A $4 rubber bracelet meant to raise breast cancer awareness has done that and more: Students nationwide are wearing the "I (heart) boobies" wristbands, and running afoul of school administrators.

Schools from California to Florida have banned the bracelets because they believe the "boobies" language is inappropriate.

The bracelets are marketed by a California-based nonprofit created to raise breast cancer awareness among youth. The Keep A Breast Foundation has sold 2 million of the bracelets so far, with the money going to breast cancer research and education programs.

1 In 22 Blacks Will Get HIV, New CDC Report Says

Black Americans have highest risk of being diagnosed with the AIDS virus

Health officials estimate that 1 in 22 black Americans will be diagnosed with the AIDS virus in their lifetime — more than twice the risk for Hispanics and eight times that of whites.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported the numbers Thursday. The report says the lifetime risk is 1 in 52 for Hispanics, and 1 in 170 for whites.

Asian-Americans had the lowest lifetime risk, at about 1 in 222.

The data is not considered surprising. Earlier research has shown blacks, especially, have a high risk of HIV infection.

The estimates are based on 2007 death certificates, population figures and HIV surveillance data from 37 states and Puerto Rico. They update similar calculations reported two years ago.

Obama, Biden Campaign To Hold VP's Old Senate Seat

Delaware stop offers opportunity to portray O'Donnell as symbol of far-right GOP

It's a rare bright spot on the campaign trail for President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden: a visit to Delaware to rally support for keeping Biden's old Senate seat in Democratic hands.

With Tea Party-backed Republican Christine O'Donnell lagging badly in the polls against Democrat Chris Coons, the trip Friday could as much as anything serve as a chance for Obama to highlight O'Donnell's hardline views and argue that she's a symbol of a far-right GOP.

It is part of a busy campaign homestretch that will send Obama from coast to coast trying to raise money and generate enthusiasm for Democratic candidates trying to hold the party's majorities in the House and Senate. He's wrapping up the week with additional trips to Massachusetts and Ohio.

NY County To Register Animal Abusers

FARMINGVILLE (AP)— You’ve heard of Megan’s Laws, designed to keep sex offenders from striking again. Now there’s a law created in the hope of preventing animal abusers from inflicting more cruelty — or moving on to human victims.Suffolk County, on the eastern half of Long Island, moved to create the nation’s first animal abuse registry this week, requiring people convicted of cruelty to animals to register or face jail time and fines.

“We know there is a very strong correlation between animal abuse and domestic violence,” said Suffolk County legislator Jon Cooper, the bill’s sponsor. “Almost every serial killer starts out by torturing animals, so in a strange sense we could end up protecting the lives of people.”The online list will be open to the public, so that pet owners or the merely curious can find out whether someone living near them is on it. Some animal abusers have been known to steal their neighbors’ pets. Cooper is also pushing legislation that would bar anyone on the registry from buying or adopting a pet from a shelter, pet shop or breeder. The law was prompted by a number of animal abuse cases in recent months, including that of a Selden woman accused of forcing her children to watch her torture and kill kittens and dozens of dogs, then burying the pets in her backyard.

Animal welfare activists hope the law, passed unanimously Tuesday in the suburban New York City county of 1.5 million people, will inspire governments nationwide in the same way Megan’s Law registries for child molesters have proliferated in the past decade.

A spokesman for county Executive Steve Levy said he intends to sign the legislation. It then requires a 30-day review by state officials before it goes on the books.

As Fred Surbito took his Yorkshire terrier, Sasha, in for grooming at a Farmingville pet store this week, he applauded the legislation. “It’s very, very important,” he said. “If you don’t love an animal, you should not have an animal. An animal is part of your family. Like your children, they should never be neglected or harmed. Anybody that does should never own a pet again.”

More than a dozen states have introduced legislation to establish similar registries, but Suffolk County is the first government entity to pass such a law, said Stephan Otto, director of legislative affairs for the Animal Legal Defense Fund.

The Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will administer the database, to be funded by a $50 fee paid by convicted abusers. All abusers 18 or older must supply authorities with their address, a head-and-shoulders photograph and any aliases. Convicted abusers will remain on the registry for five years. Those failing to register face up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.

After the 2009 arrest of Sharon McDonough, accused of burying kittens and as many as 42 dogs in her yard, neighbors whose pets had disappeared feared the worst. But authorities later concluded that McDonough — who is expected in court this month and could get up to two years in prison if convicted — bought the animals or adopted them through shelters or other traditional outlets. While some abuse is motivated purely by cruelty, Suffolk SPCA Chief Roy Gross said, some recent cases are linked to the poor economy. For instance, an emaciated Doberman mix was recently found near death inside a foreclosed-on home, he said. And sometimes, pet rescuer Cathy Mulnard said, elderly people on fixed incomes must decide between eating, or feeding their pets. “They don’t mean to be bad to the animal, but they get overwhelmed and don’t know how to ask for help. They may be innocent abusers,” said Mulnard, a founder and co-director of Second Chance Rescue, a Suffolk animal shelter that works closely with the SPCA.Mulnard called the legislation “a godsend for the animals.” “We take care of our animals and love our animals the way you do your children,” she said. “We need to protect every animal that’s out there because they don’t make the decisions in their life; human beings do.”

Pelosi's Family, Staffers Fly The Friendly Skies

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and members of her family and staff took 85 tax-paid trips on military aircraft between March 2, 2009, and June 7, 2010, according to new documents uncovered by Judicial Watch.

Pelosi's daughter, son-in-law and two grandsons were on the June 20, 2009, flight from Andrews AFB to San Francisco where Pelosi resides, according to the documents. On July 2, 2010, Pelosi took a grandson on a flight from Andrews to Travis AFB, north of San Francisco.

Judicial Watch obtained the documents as a result of a January 25, 2009, Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.

Previous documents received by the non-profit watchdog group revealed that Pelosi's travel "cost the United States Air Force $2,100,744.59 over a two-year period — $101,429.14 of which was for in-flight expenses, including food and alcohol," according to Judicial Watch.

POLL: Voters More Likely To See Democrats As Dominated By Extremists

Likely voters in battleground districts see extremists as having a more dominant influence over the Democratic Party than they do over the GOP.

This result comes from The Hill 2010 Midterm Election Poll, which found that 44 percent of likely voters say the Democratic Party is more dominated by its extreme elements, whereas 37 percent say it’s the Republican Party that is more dominated by extremists.

The revelations in a survey of 10 toss-up congressional districts across the country point to problems for Democrats, who are trying to motivate a disillusioned base and appeal to independents moving to the GOP ahead of the Nov. 2 election.

The polling firm Penn, Schoen and Berland conducted the survey, contacting 4,047 likely voters by phone between Oct. 2 and Oct. 7. The margin of error for this sample is 1.5 percent.

More than one in every five Democrats (22 percent) in The Hill’s survey said their party was more dominated than the GOP by extreme views. The equivalent figure among Republicans is 11 percent.

Results for independent voters reflected the larger sample. Forty-three percent of likely independent voters said the Democratic Party is more dominated by its extreme elements, compared to 37 percent who thought the GOP had fallen under the sway of extreme views.

Obama Wants $1.25 B To Compensate Up To 66,000 African American Farmers

President Barack Obama is requesting $1.15 billion from Congress—to add to a $100-million earmark he pushed through Congress in 2008 when he was a senator—to create a $1.25 billion federal fund to settle discrimination claims by what the Justice Department says is 66,000 African Americans who “farmed or attempted to farm” and were allegedly the victims of discrimination committed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) during the period from Jan. 1, 1981 to Dec. 31, 1996.

During that 16-year period, however, the number of African American farm operators in the United States peaked at 33,000 in 1982, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. By 1992, says the Census Bureau, the number of African American farmers had fallen as low as 19,000. (There were 2.24 million total farmers in the United States in 1982 and 1.93 million in 1992.)

A "farm operator," according to the Census, is "a person who operates a farm, either doing the work or making day-to-day decisions." Farm operators include both individuals who own farms and who rent them.

A Department of Justice spokeswoman told CNSNews.com that the $1.15 billion the administration is requesting from Congress to settle what is called the Pigford II case is based on complaints of discrimination from 66,000 individual African American farmers who allege the Department of Agriculture wrongfully denied them federal farm loans or benefits between the beginning of 1981 and the end of 1996.

Ballot Questions To Be Decided November 2nd

QUESTION 1: STATEWIDE QUESTION
Maryland Constitutional Convention – Sense of the Voters
Chapter 9 of 2010 (Senate Bill 26)

Summary
This question asks Maryland voters whether a convention for the purpose of changing the Maryland Constitution should be called.

Section 2 of Article XIV of the Maryland Constitution requires the General Assembly every twenty years to ask the voters whether a constitutional convention should be called.
If a majority of voters voting at the 2010 general election vote for calling a constitutional
convention, the General Assembly, at its next session, would be required to provide by law for
the assembling of the convention and the elections for delegates to the convention.

If a constitutional convention is called by Maryland voters, any new constitution or
change or amendment to the current Maryland Constitution that may be adopted by the
constitutional convention would be submitted to the voters of the State for adoption or rejection
at a later election.

QUESTION 2: CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT
Civil Jury Trials – Amount in Controversy
Chapter 480 of 2010 (Senate Bill 119)

Summary
This constitutional amendment would provide that legislation may be enacted to limit the right to
a jury trial in a civil proceeding in which the amount in controversy is not more than $15,000 instead of
not more than $10,000, as currently specified in the Maryland Constitution. The dollar amount specified
in the constitutional amendment excludes attorney’s fees that may be recoverable in the civil proceeding.

Legislation passed in the 2010 session of the General Assembly, contingent on the approval of
this constitutional amendment by the voters, would provide that a party may not demand a jury trial in a civil proceeding if the amount in controversy does not exceed $15,000, excluding attorney’s fees if
attorney’s fees are recoverable in the proceeding. In that case, a judge, rather than a jury, would determine
the verdict.

QUESTION 3: CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT
Baltimore City – Orphans’ Court Judges – Qualifications
Chapter 481 of 2010 (House Bill 417)

Summary
This constitutional amendment would require that, in addition to the current eligibility
requirements, each of the three judges of the Orphans’ Court for Baltimore City be a member in
good standing of the Maryland Bar who is admitted to practice law in Maryland.

An orphans’ court hears all contested matters regarding a decedent’s estate, including
validity of wills and legal questions involving transfers of property. The orphans’ court also
supervises estates that are probated judicially; approves accounts, awards of personal
representatives’ commissions, and attorney’s fees in all estates; and has concurrent jurisdiction
with the circuit courts in the guardianship of minors and their property.

Currently, the Maryland Constitution provides that, in Baltimore City and in each county
(except Harford and Montgomery counties) three orphans’ court judges be elected. The only
requirements to qualify for election as an orphans’ court judge are that an individual be a citizen
of the Maryland and reside for the prior 12 months in the jurisdiction from which the individual
is elected.

Currently, in Harford and Montgomery counties only, the circuit court for the county
also serves as the orphans’ court for the county. Because circuit court judges must be attorneys,
only in Harford and Montgomery counties are the judges who sit as orphans’ court judges
currently required to be attorneys.

For this constitutional amendment to be implemented, it must be approved by both a
majority of the statewide voters and a majority of the voters in Baltimore City.

Cities, Counties Can't Stop Federal Immigration Checks

ICE won't honor requests to opt out of Secure Communities — and it won't say why

Cities and counties can't stop federal officials from sifting through local police records to root out illegal immigrants, even though U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has characterized the program in place as voluntary since it started up two years ago, federal documents show.

When a local law authority arrests someone, it submits his or her fingerprints to the FBI to confirm identity and check for a previous criminal record. That's been a standard part of the booking process in every police agency in America for decades.

Why Does Digital Camera Repair Cost More Than Just Buying A New One?

Dan writes that he was very happy with his Panasonic camera, a point-and-shoot with a nice zoom lens. He would have been happy to pay $100 to get it back in working order and avoid buying a new one. Alas, this was not to be. Since a special part needed to be ordered from Japan, Panasonic wanted $488 to repair a camera that originally cost $300. Dan is better off buying a new camera--which won't be a Panasonic.

Ehrlich Strikes Again! O'Malley And CASA So Happy Together!

2ND EHRLICH -O'MALLEY DEBATE

Today's Washington Post hosted debate between former Gov Bob Ehrlich and current Gov Martin O'Malley was a barn burner.  And once again, Ehrlich nailed O'Malley to the wall for his blatant disrespect of our American culture, English language, values and the rule of law.  Brian Murphy supporters, Bob Ehrlich has again put it all on the line in opposing illegal immigration and the hate filled group CASA of Maryland!

It started with a simple question from the moderator concerning "aid to groups that harbor illegal aliens". "Would you or would you not end funding for such groups if proven they supported illegals "?

When Ehrlich's responded, he did so with a barrage of facts and figures that left O'Malley totally defenseless and numb.

He nailed O'Malley for "celebrating the new CASA headquarters in PG County", all the while knowing that CASA harbors Hispanic illegal aliens and distributes booklets telling illegals how to avoid law enforcement. Ehrlich called CASA a gross example of lawlessness and wasted Maryland tax dollars, and stated he would terminate all funding for CASA.

He also ridiculed O'Malley for allowing illegal aliens to keep their drivers' licenses for 5 years, jeopardizing the safety of Maryland citizens.   Lastly, he again stated for the record that illegals will never get In-State tuition if he is elected Governor again.

The question left O'Malley dead in his tracks.

When O'Malley finally opened his mouth, the hate and disrespect for the citizens of Maryland was quite obvious.  He truly had no answer but instead threw out terms like, "Comprehensive Immigration Reform", "its a Federal Issue", ""Nativitism is on the rise in Maryland".  O'Malley even tossed out the meaningless "New Americans" line again when describing illegal aliens, and then tried to accuse Ehrlich of "not wanting to help poor starving immigrants in need of medical assistance".

Ehrlich counting the bogus "New Americans" line by saying "so if someone breaks into my house, are they a new family member"?
We all knew that O'Malley was in the pocket of the lawless CASA of Maryland organization, but I never realized how deep that bond with Gustavo Torres, Hugo Chavez, La Raza and the hundreds of thousands of Hispanic illegal aliens in Maryland extended. In the end, O'Malley never actually answered the question about cutting off funds from lawless groups that support illegals.

I would hope that if Ehrlich is elected again that he would also terminate the Executive Order put in place by O'Malley that created Maryland's "New Americans" bureaucracy. Its a drain on the taxpayers and it fully overlaps federal programs already in place.

A Letter To The Editor

Joe,

Yesterday I received a phone call from a woman who asked to speak to me, she asked using my first and last name.  She said she had noticed that I had filled out a form for an absentee ballot.  She then proceeded to tell me to vote for Michael James.  When I filled out the application, I trusted the Board of Elections to keep my information for their own use.  It asked for my phone number and next to that is printed "in case there are any questions concerning your application".  I did not send my information so that anyone running in the election could have it.  The phone call yesterday was followed up today with an envelope today with information from the Michael James campaign.  Not only was my phone number given out but now my address has also been given out to people I do not know.  I don't like this at all.  Well, if they can hand out my phone number to anyone so can I.  The information from yesterday's phone call is "Howard N" 410-524-1881.  Thanks a lot Board of Elections.  You've proven it's not only the politicians who can't be trusted.

Ticked off voter!

Candidate Reggie Mason Provides Bio & Platform

My name is Reggie Mason, current Chief Deputy of the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office, and candidate for Sheriff. I have the proven experience, dedication, and leadership skills necessary to manage the Sheriff’s Office. I want to continue to make Worcester County a safe place to work and live.

Born and raised in Worcester County and a graduate of Pocomoke High School. I proudly served my country (1965-1969) as a United States Marine Corps Sergeant, serving two tours of duty in Vietnam, receiving many citations and my honorable discharge.

I started my police career at the Ocean City Police Department in 1970- a detective, Corporal, Sergeant, and acting Lieutenant K-9 Commander/Trainer. I served as a K-9 deputy with the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office 1979-1984. In 1984 I was appointed Chief Deputy, serving under two Sheriff’s, being the longest serving Chief Deputy in the history of Maryland. I am a graduate of the National Sheriff’s Institute, FBI National Academy class U11, a graduate of two Maryland Sheriff’s Executive Schools, and the Fire/Police Incident Command School. I have attended over one hundred other schools, including twenty-five in the field of leadership, management, and budget issues.

My Missions:
More deputies on Road Patrol
Command Staff Night Patrol
Deputy back in Community Policing
Check businesses to ensure they are not selling alcohol/tobacco to minors
Meetings in the county to discuss issues of importance

In March, a VA Trooper and three Accomack County Deputy Sheriff’s were sworn in with the WCSO, and our CET deputies were sworn in by these agencies. For months we have been crossing state lines helping each other on fighting drugs. This has resulted in many arrests and seizures of property in Pocomoke, Berlin, and Virginia. We will continue to go after them. It will take time, but we will get them.

Since I have been at the Sheriff’s Office, many changes have been made. SWAT Teams, CBI Investigations, CET (Criminal Enforcement Team), NDTF (Narcotics Drug Task Force) and more K-9 dogs have been added. School Resource Officers were added to make our schools safer and a DARE Deputy to teach our kids about alcohol and drugs. There is a deputy assigned to track sex offenders in our county, and we have formed a partnership with the US Marshals Office to assist when one might try to leave this area without checking in. By hiring part time deputies to handle five courts has saved tax payers over one million dollars. I have been a part of this over the years, making changes to better serve you.

I have served the citizens of Worcester County for more than thirty-eight years in making our county safe and would like to continue. I would like your vote on November 2, 2010.

DHMH Announces First Maryland Flu Case Of 2010-11 Flu Season

Mayor Rawlings-Blake, State and Local Health Officials Get Vaccinated
With H1N1 flu still in the mix, vaccination still the best protection

Baltimore, MD - The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) today announced the first official case of influenza for the 2010-2011 flu season. Laboratory tests have confirmed that the flu strain involved is the H1N1 strain the caused the 2009 pandemic. The Baltimore metro area adult has known health risk factors for influenza complications and was hospitalized but continues to recover. The announcement came as DHMH Secretary John M. Colmers, Deputy Secretary Fran Phillips, Baltimore City Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and City Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot received their seasonal flu shots at a city clinic this afternoon.

“Maryland’s first confirmed flu case of this season reminds us all that when you get vaccinated, you are protecting more than just yourself,” said John M. Colmers, DHMH Secretary. “The vaccine that keeps you from getting the flu, will keep you from spreading it as well. Getting vaccinated will help you protect your loved ones, friends, neighbors and co-workers. Remember, some people are more vulnerable to serious flu complications and are at risk of losing more than time from work or school.”

This year you’ll only need one type of flu vaccination to be covered (except for some children under age 9). The seasonal flu vaccine this year will protect you from H1N1 flu and two other flu strains that health officials believe will be the most prevalent this season. The vaccine is widely available this year and Maryland residents are urged to get protected now by contacting their health care provider, Local Health Department or neighborhood pharmacy.

“The CDC is now recommending that everyone above the age of 6 months get the seasonal flu vaccine,” said Fran Phillips, DHMH Deputy Secretary for Public Health Services. “Even if you’ve been vaccinated for H1N1 before, you should get vaccinated again to protect yourself and your loved ones against the flu strains we expect to see this season. Our seniors and anyone with serious underlying health conditions still face a higher risk of complications from seasonal flu.”

Baltimore City is among the many Maryland jurisdictions statewide that  have made the seasonal flu vaccine available to everyone through daily or specially scheduled public clinics.

“Getting vaccinated against the flu is the best way Baltimore residents can protect themselves and their families from getting sick,” said Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. “The effects of flu are far more severe than the common cold and can cause people to miss school, work and other important events. I encourage everyone to talk to their doctor or pharmacist or visit a free City flu clinic and get protected today.”

Find out more about seasonal flu vaccination clinics in your area by calling your Local Health Department or visiting Get Vaccinated (http://dhmh.maryland.gov/swineflu/getVaccinated.html) at the DHMH Flu website (http://dhmh.maryland.gov/swineflu/) for contact information and clinic schedules.

For more information about the seriousness of influenza and the benefits of vaccination, talk to your doctor or nurse, visit www.cdc.gov or Seasonal Flu Vaccine or call CDC at 1-800-CDC-INFO.

Makin’ Stuff Up: The Sequel

Leaders Lead, Politicians Use Clichés

ANNAPOLIS – From Washington D.C. to Annapolis, incumbent monopolies are spending money their citizens don’t have while kicking the reality can down the road.  Marylanders deserve a leader, not a politician.  Bob Ehrlich is the only responsible candidate in this race honest enough to deliver the truth to Marylanders about what we can afford and how to create jobs for families.

O’Malley Kicks the Can, Supports the Status Quo: Governor O’Malley has no plan to fix Maryland’s pension system, which is $33 billion in the red.  In fact, Governor O’Malley supports the status quo which is on course to drive Maryland to fiscal ruin. Bob Ehrlich is honest about the reality facing our pension systems and has a plan to fix it.

Protecting Priorities Means Protecting Government: Every answer Governor O’Malley gave today included protecting and growing government and increasing spending.  Bob Ehrlich is focused on protecting Maryland families and decreasing the size of government.

Spending Money We Don’t Have: Once again, Governor O’Malley said he’ll spend $2 billion that Maryland doesn’t have to build mass transit lines. Bob Ehrlich is the only candidate willing to be honest about what Maryland can afford. He will build the Purple Line in a way that saves taxpayers upwards of $1 billion without losing rider capacity.

O’Malley Wants To Aid Illegal Immigrants: Governor O’Malley refused to say whether or not he would defund organizations that support illegal immigration. Bob Ehrlich was honest and pledged to protect Maryland citizens and defund organizations that encourage illegal immigration.

O’Malley Misleads Maryland About Casino Campaign Contributions:  Governor O’Malley likes to paint Bob Ehrlich as a casino lobbyist but Governor O’Malley is the only candidate in the race who is being funded by large gaming interests.  Penn National has donated $16,000 to the O’Malley/Brown campaign and donated $200,000 to pass Martin O’Malley’s slots plan.

Making Stuff Up About Standing Up To Big Utilities: Governor O’Malley took $33,000 from Pepco and subsequently gave them a $21 million government contract. Pepco was responsible for 240,000 residents losing their power this summer.   Bob Ehrlich was honest about the utility reality in Maryland in 2006 and he is still honest about it in 2010.

Spend, Spend, Spend: Governor O’Malley’s entire job creation plan is centered on spending government money. Bob Ehrlich understands that job creation requires getting government out of the way. He will reduce regulations and reduce taxes on families and entrepreneurs to create jobs.

Taking Undo Credit: Governor O’Malley touts a U.S. Chamber of Commerce study giving Maryland high ranking in jobs innovation, yet that study is based largely on Bob Ehrlich’s tenure in office when 100,000 private sector jobs were created.

ON HELPING PRINCE GEORGE'S AND MONTGOMERY COUNTIES, EHRLICH DRAWS A BLANK

Telling Moment in Debate: Ehrlich Has No Plan for Greater Washington Region Other Than Cutting Education Funding

Baltimore, MD -- In one telling exchange in today's gubernatorial debate, former Governor Bob Ehrlich drew a blank when asked to name one specific policy he would undertake to help Prince George's and Montgomery Counties.

In contrast, Governor Martin O'Malley responded with several specific plans to aid the region where he grew up, including a vision to build a world-class medical institution in Prince George's Community Hospital, plans to build Purple Line light rail connecting Prince George's and Montgomery Counties, and a commitment to continue the record investments in public education O'Malley made during his first four years in office.

"If you live in the Greater Washington region, you saw a very clear contrast between a governor who is on your side in Martin O'Malley and one who has no plan for the region in Bob Ehrlich," said Rick Abbruzzese, O'Malley-Brown Deputy Campaign Manager.

"Bob Ehrlich opposes a Purple Line that will boost economic development in the region, and he has actually pledged to cut public school funding to Prince George's and Montgomery Counties if elected.  The Greater Washington region can't afford another four years of Bob Ehrlich."

Governor O'Malley invested $4.1 billion in Prince George's County schools when he was Governor, a $1.1 billion increase over former Governor Ehrlich.  Governor O'Malley invested $2.4 billion in Montgomery Counties public schools, a 57% increase over former Governor Ehrlich.

The Greater Washington Board of Trade endorsed Governor O'Malley this year, after having having previously endorsed Governor Ehrlich in prior campaigns.  The endorsement was all the more remarkable because the board's former chairman, John M. Kane, is the husband of Ehrlich's running mate, Mary Kane.

GOVERNOR O'MALLEY ANNOUNCES PLAN TO PROTECT MARYLAND RATEPAYERS, CREATE RELIABILITY STANDARDS FOR UTILITIES

Baltimore, MD -- During yesterday's second gubernatorial debate, Governor O'Malley reaffirmed his fight on the side of Maryland ratepayers by announcing plans to create reliability standards for Maryland utilities. Interest in reliability standards reappeared among Maryland regulators when a storm resulted in more than 300,000 power outages in late July largely in Montgomery and Prince George's Counties, some for as long as five days in record heat.

"The people of Maryland deserve the highest standards of service from their utilities, but they also deserve to have some measure of reliability for the service they pay for," said Governor O'Malley.

"While Bob Ehrlich appointed his unqualified cronies to important positions on the Public Service Commission, we've restored professional regulators to the PSC and have fought on the side of Maryland's working families every step of the way."

In late August, Governor O'Malley formally requested that the Public Service Commission mandate reliability standards as part of their formal inquiry into Pepco's service interruptions. The Public Service Commission launched a formal inquiry following requests from Governor O'Malley to investigate a series of major storm-related power outage over several weeks.

"We can no longer accept that utilities are trying their best," Governor O'Malley continued.

"We must demand safe and reliable electric distribution service and responsive and meaningful customer communication as measured by objective standards."

After restoring professional regulators to Maryland's Public Service Commission, the O'Malley-Brown Administration secured more than $2 billion in relief for Maryland rate payers, and an additional $1.6 billion in savings is expected through 2013.

O'MALLEY WINS SECOND DEBATE WITH FORWARD-LOOKING PLAN FOR MARYLAND

Ehrlich Attempts to Mislead Voters About His Record, Launches More of the Same Desperate and Discredited Attacks That Fall Flat
Baltimore, MD (October 14, 2010) -- Governor O'Malley won the second gubernatorial debate with a clear focus on jobs and the economy, leveling with Marylanders about the tough choices we've made to move our economy forward.

In his closing remarks, O'Malley noted that Maryland is making the difficult choices to move forward in challenging times and will continue to move forward with the right leadership.

"We need a Governor who is on our side...I love the people of our state, I'm optimistic about our future, if we have the courage to move forward" said Governor O'Malley.

By contrast, Bob Ehrlich struggled to lay out a clear vision for the next four years, instead falling back on discredited and misleading negative attacks and pledging to take Maryland back to the failed policies of the past, when he raised taxes and fees on every Maryland family by a total of $3 billion, spent more than any governor in Maryland history, and jacked up college tuition 40%.

At a particularly telling moment in the debate, Ehrlich flatly denied that he raised the property tax, when in fact he raised property taxes on Maryland homeowners and businesses by $693 million.

Despite being asked repeatedly by panelists, Ehrlich refused to state how he would pay for the billion in new campaign promises he has proposed.

Debate Round Two: Ehrlich Wins

Leaders Lead, Politicians Use Clichés

ANNAPOLIS – The Bob Ehrlich for Maryland campaign released the following statement today from Communications Director Henry Fawell regarding today’s debate and Martin O’Malley’s latest attempt today to change the subject from his legacy of massive job losses, record tax increases, and ballooning budget deficits by making stuff up.

“Today’s debate once again reminded Marylanders of the two distinct choices they have for governor; one candidate who is focused on improving Maryland’s future and another who is focused on making stuff up, avoiding his own failed record, and spending more money that state doesn’t have.  Governor O’Malley has spent the last six months making false statements and today was no different.  Whether it is claiming he created 33,000 jobs when unemployment actually doubled or attacking Bob Ehrlich on taxes when he authored, passed, and enacted the largest tax increase in Maryland’s history, Martin O’Malley’s entire campaign is based on misleading Maryland voters, spending money we don’t have, and raising taxes.   Bob Ehrlich once again proved there is the only candidate in the race who has pledged to make job creation and tax cuts his first priorities for Maryland families.”

Fact Check: Education Costs Have Risen Under O’Malley

Claim: Record investment, tuition freezes, GCI investment.
Fact: Education costs have risen under O’Malley and the Governor plans to raise tuition again if reelected.
O’Malley increased cost of college by 26%:  The cost of going to the University of Maryland College Park, for example, actually increased $5,767 – or 26% -- since Martin O’Malley has taken office. These costs include tuition, room, board, and other mandatory fees.  The same can be said for several other public institutions in Maryland, such as Salisbury University and Towson University. So while O’Malley says he froze tuition working families are actually being forced to pay more to send their child to college under Martin O’Malley. (University of Maryland College Park, Annual Tuition and other Fees. Accessed 10/14/2010)
College Park President confirms looming tuition hikes:  Dr. Wallace Loh, president of the University of Maryland, tells WYPR in the linked interview that the biggest challenge facing UMD is, “constrained state support” and that there is “a little bit of room to have some increases in tuition” and “the question is not whether it will rise but by how much.” (Maryland Morning. The Low Down With Dr. Loh, WYPR,  8/18/10)
Even worse, O’Malley plans to raise tuition if reelected:
O’Malley plans a 26% increase in tuition after re-election: Tucked way towards the back of Martin O’Malley’s last budget it shows he’s planning a 26.5% increase in tuition if he’s reelected (5.3% per year) Appendix F: http://link.sc.states.gop.com/?65-1056-2585-125-10611

FACT CHECK: Maryland’s Job Climate

Claim: Maryland better off than other states
Fact: Maryland’s Business Climate Lags Behind Neighboring States
The Maryland Chamber Commerce recently reinforced how uncompetitive Maryland is with the neighboring states of Virginia, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania.  The study, done by Ernst and Young, measured corporate taxes in three important Maryland industries: financial services, bio-tech research and manufacturing, and professional services. Maryland ranks dead last in tax rates for each industry except one.
The Chamber study concluded:
·        Maryland has the highest tax rates for both financial services and professional services,
·        Business taxes in Maryland are higher for both the professional and financial services industries
·        Maryland has the highest state and local taxes paid by middle-class families,
·        Maryland is ranked worst in combined individual income tax rates,
·        Maryland has the highest electricity cost for both commercial and industrial users.
·        The study shows Maryland is competitive in biotechnology, thanks in part to Bob Ehrlich authoring an enacting the biotech tax credit in his first term.
BACKGROUND: According to a recent study of business confidence done by the Jacob Francis Institute, Maryland’s business confidence has declined 58% over the last four years.  A study done by the Tax Foundation concluded Maryland has dropped 21 spots in the Business climate index over the last four years to 45th worst in the nation.
