(HAGERSTOWN, MD) — Maryland State Police homicide investigators are continuing their investigation into the apparent murder of an inmate last night at a state prison in Washington County.
The deceased victim is identified as Benjamin Hall, 26, an inmate at the Maryland Correctional Institute Hagerstown (MCI-H). According to Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) officials, Hall was serving a sentence of 7 years for theft.
A suspect has been developed during the investigation, but he has not been charged and will not be identified until that occurs. The suspect is an inmate at the same institution.
At about 11:00 p.m. last night, the Maryland State Homicide Unit was contacted by members of the DPSCS Internal Investigations Unit (IIU) regarding an inmate death at the Maryland Correctional Institute Hagerstown. Troopers were informed an inmate was lying on the floor of his cell and unresponsive.
State Police homicide investigators responded to the prison and worked throughout the night, assisted by DPSCS investigators and prison staff. The preliminary investigation indicates that around 10:30 p.m., Hall may have been involved in an altercation with another inmate inside Hall’s cell. At approximately 10:30 p.m. the fellow inmate called for a correctional officer. Correctional officers in the area immediately responded, along with personnel from the medical unit. Hall did not respond to the immediate medical treatment and was pronounced deceased.
Hall was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy to confirm the cause and manner of death.
Forensic analysts from the Maryland State Police Forensic Scienced Division conducted scene processing. Upon completion of the investigation, reports will be forwarded to the Washington County State’s Attorney’s Office for a review and determination regarding criminal charges. The investigation is continuing.
