First Wife Gets It All

The Supreme Court says a dead federal employee's benefits go to his ex-wife despite his remarriage. Warren Hillman made his first wife the beneficiary of his Federal Employees' Group Life Insurance policy before their divorce. He never changed the designation after he remarried. When Hillman died, his first wife got the money. The second wife sued. Despite Virginia law, no luck. The court says named beneficiaries get the money.

"We have spoken with the restaurant and confirmed that the shells were never served to customers,” company officials replied on its Facebook page in response to a copy of the photograph. “This is completely unacceptable and we are taking the appropriate action against everyone involved."

Rocket Launch Scheduled Tonight June 4 From Wallops

WALLOPS ISLAND, VA – A Black Brant XII suborbital rocket carrying the Cosmic Infrared Background ExpeRiment (CIBER)is scheduled for launch between 11 and 11:59 p.m. EDT, June 4, from NASA’s launch range at the Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia.

The backup launch days are June 5 through 10. The rocket may be visible to residents in the mid-Atlantic region.

With CIBER, scientists will be studying when the first stars and galaxies formed in the universe and how brightly they burned their nuclear fuel.

Jamie Bock, CIBER principal investigator from the California Institute of Technology, said, “The objectives of the experiment are of fundamental importance for astrophysics: to probe the process of first galaxy formation. The measurement is extremely difficult technically.”

This will be the fourth flight for CIBER on a NASA sounding rocket. The previous launches were in 2009, 2010 and 2012 from the White Sands Missile Range, N.M. After each flight the experiment or payload was recovered for post-calibrations and re-flight.

For this flight CIBER will fly on a larger and more powerful rocket than before. This will loft CIBER to a higher altitude than those previously obtained, thus providing longer observation time for the instruments. The experiment, which will safely splash down in the Atlantic Ocean more than 400 miles off the Virginia coast, will not be recovered.

The NASA Visitor Center at Wallops will open at 9:30 p.m. on launch day for public viewing of the launch.

The mission will be available live on Ustream beginning at 10 p.m. on launch day at:http://www.ustream.com/channel/nasa-wallops

Mission status on launch day can be followed on Twitter and Facebook at:http://www.twitter.com/NASA_Wallops orhttp://www.facebook.com/NASAWFF

Mission status also is available on the Wallops launch status line at 757-824-2050.

More information on CIBER and the NASA Sounding Rocket Program is available at:http://www.nasa.gov/soundingrockets

The Obama Veto

The White House says President Barack Obama will veto a pair of national- security spending bills moving through the House unless they come with other measures to bolster education and the economy. At issue are the fiscal 2014 appropriations for Homeland Security and for military construction and Veterans Affairs. They are mostly kind to the affected agencies. But the White House says Congress must agree on a topline discretionary budget before passing individual bills. Otherwise, it says, bills like these would lead to draconian cuts elsewhere. The House plans this week to consider the first of 12 spending bills.

Sebelius Won't Intervene In Girl's Transplant Case

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The U.S. health secretary said she won't intervene in an "incredibly agonizing" transplant decision about a dying Pennsylvania girl, noting that three other children in the same hospital are just as sick.

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told a congressional panel Tuesday that medical experts should make those decisions.

However, relatives of 10-year-old Sarah Murnaghan said Sebelius' remarks confused them because they want a policy change for all pre-adolescent children awaiting lung transplants, not just Sarah.

The Newtown Square girl has been hospitalized at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for three months with end-stage cystic fibrosis and is on a ventilator. Her family wants children younger than 12 to be eligible for adult lungs because so few pediatric lungs are available.

One Walmart's Low Wages Could Cost Taxpayers $900,000 Per Year, House Dems Find

Walmart wages are so low that many of its workers rely on food stamps and other government aid programs to fulfill their basic needs, a reality that could cost taxpayers as much as $900,000 at just one Walmart Supercenter in Wisconsin, according to a study released by Congressional Democrats on Thursday.

Though the study assumes that most workers who qualify for the public assistance programs do take advantage of them, it injects a potent data point into a national debate about the minimum wage at a time when many Walmart and fast food workers are mounting strikes in pursuit of higher wages.

The study uses Medicaid data released in Wisconsin to piece together the annual cost to taxpayers for providing a host of social safety net programs, including food stamps and publicly subsidized health care, to workers at one Supercenter in the state.

Perdue Expands Va. Soybean Exports To China

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Perdue Agribusiness is expanding exports of Virginia soybeans to China.

Dandong Port Group has agreed to buy up to 29 million bushels of soybeans from this year's crop.

Since an agreement signed in September 2011, Dandong has purchased more than 30 million bushels of soybeans.

Gov. Bob McDonnell says the recently signed agreement was reached during a trade and marketing mission to Asia in April.

McDonnell's office says the new export commitments will help Dandong meet a rapidly increasing demand for soybeans in China.

Perdue Agribusiness operates an export terminal in Chesapeake.

White House Promises Veto of GOP Spending Plan

The White House stepped in Monday with a veto threat against a House GOP plan to advance a round of 2014 spending bills that would ease sequester-imposed cuts on the Pentagon while forcing even deeper cuts on non-defense programs.

Those cuts would come in areas like education, energy and water development and foreign aid.

In a statement, the White House budget office said the cuts called for in the GOP plan would force thousands of poor children off of Head Start, harm special education, cut federal law enforcement and dent medical research grants to thousands of scientists. It called on the Democratic Senate and GOP House to reach a broader agreement on the budget before advancing spending bills.

Iraq Collapse Shows Bankruptcy Of Interventionism

May was Iraq's deadliest month in nearly five years, with more than 1,000 dead - both civilians and security personnel -- in a rash of bombings, shootings and other violence. As we read each day of new horrors in Iraq, it becomes more obvious that the US invasion delivered none of the promised peace or stability that proponents of the attack promised.

Millions live in constant fear, refugees do not return home, and the economy is destroyed. The Christian community, some 1.2 million persons before 2003, has been nearly wiped off the Iraqi map. Other minorities have likewise disappeared. Making matters worse, US support for the Syrian rebels next door has drawn the Shi'ite-led Iraqi government into the spreading regional unrest and breathed new life into extremist elements.

The invasion of Iraq opened the door to Al-Qaeda in Iraq, which did not exist beforehand, while simultaneously strengthening the hand of Iran in the region. Were the "experts" who planned for and advocated the US attack really this incompetent?

Ryan Crocker, who was US Ambassador to Iraq from 2007-2009, still speaks of the Iraqi "surge" as a great reconciliation between Sunni and Shi'ite in Iraq. He wrote recently that "[t]hough the United States has withdrawn its troops from Iraq, it retains significant leverage there. Iraqi forces were equipped and trained by Americans, and the country's leaders need and expect our help." He seems alarmingly out of touch with reality.

Irreconcilable Differences: Conflicting Marriage Laws A Problem For Gay Couples

When it comes to marriage laws, America is now a house divided.

With Illinois failing to approve a gay marriage bill late last week, the number of states expected to legalize gay marriage may be topping out and, unless the U.S. Supreme Court decides otherwise, there are few signs that a large number of other states will follow suit anytime soon.

Can the United States live with such irreconcilable differences?

What happens when a lesbian couple married in New York relocates to North Carolina, which passed an amendment to the state constitution last year banning gay marriage? Can a gay person visit his spouse in the hospital room if there’s a car accident in a non-gay-marriage state? Does a Virginia employer — where gay marriage is not recognized — have to offer spousal benefits, including 12 weeks of federally mandated family leave, to a gay worker who is commuting in every day from the District of Columbia, where gay marriage is legal? Do the laws of the state where the marriage takes place take precedence over the laws of the state where a couple may subsequently reside?

Forgotten Scandal: Gibson Guitars Still Being Persecuted for Doing No Wrong

Almost two years after Gibson Guitars was raided for violating an obscure law, Representative Marsha Blackburn (R–TN) is demanding a full explanation:
The recent scandals surrounding this administration raise a number of questions about who they choose to target and why. The arrogance and lack of transparency displayed by this President and his cabinet officials in events such as the raids on Gibson Guitar and the IRS targeting of conservative groups show a complete disregard for the rule of law.
In 2011, Gibson’s Tennessee factories were raided for allegedly violating the Lacey Act, a federal statute that makes it a crime to import tropical hardwoods in violation of foreign law.

Another Oligarch Wrist Slap: Citigroup Settles In Secret On Housing Fraud Charges

Guess what just happened? In case you forgot, the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) had previously accused Citigroup of violating securities laws and making misrepresentations of billions of mortgage bonds. Unsurprisingly, Citigroup settled, which is just a euphemism for an “oligarch wrist slap.” What’s really disturbing is that the settlement amount will remain a secret, which takes cronyism to yet another despicable level. After all, take a look at the man who runs the Treasury Department. From Bloomberg:

The conservator for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac was eager for publicity in September 2011 when it sued 17 financial institutions, accusing them of ripping off the two government-backed housing financiers. It isn’t so enthusiastic anymore.

This week the U.S. Federal Housing Finance Agency told a federal judge it had settled its case against Citigroup Inc. The agency won’t say how much money Citigroup is paying. Neither will Citigroup, which survived the financial crisis only because it got multiple taxpayer bailouts. The parties agreed to keep the terms confidential. The government has decided this is none of the public’s business.

Ocean City Fire Department Personnel Make Early Morning Water Rescue

On June 4, 2013, at approximately 2:40 a.m., Ocean City Communications received a call for a suicidal female in the area of Caroline Street and the beach. As Ocean City Police arrived in the area, the woman, whose name is not being released, entered the water and swam away from shore.

The Ocean City Fire Department (OCFD) was immediately dispatched for a water rescue in the in the area of North Division St. Ocean City Police remained on scene and kept a visual line of sight on the victim until Ocean City Fire and EMS arrived. As OCFD and EMS personnel were in route to the scene, additional reports from communications stated that the victim was drifting north between 1st and 2nd Street. Upon arrival, emergency responders located the victim in the ocean approximately 80 to 100 yards off the beach.

Ocean City Fire Department Water Rescue Unit member, Lt. Del Baker, entered the water and was later assisted by Lt. David Peterson and FF/Paramedic Bill Kuhn. The three rescue swimmers removed the victim from the water and she was treated by EMS crews and later transported to Atlantic General Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

“This was an excellent example of emergency responders working together to save a life,” said Ocean City Fire Department Chief Chris Larmore. “I am proud of the three members of our Water Rescue Unit who entered the water this morning, in addition to all of the fire, EMS, police and communications members that assisted.”

Senate Votes On Small Changes To Int'l Food Aid

The Senate on Monday voted to make modest changes to the way international food aid is delivered, a much scaled-back version of an overhaul proposed by President Barack Obama earlier this year.

Senators adopted an amendment by voice vote to a wide-ranging farm bill Monday that would slightly boost dollars to buy locally-grown food close to needy areas abroad. Currently, most food aid is grown in the United States and shipped to developing countries, an approach the Obama administration says is inefficient.

The Senate farm bill would allocate $40 million annually for a local purchase program - an increase from current dollars, but still a small portion of the $1.8 billion spent on food aid. The amendment sponsored by Republican Mike Johanns, of Nebraska, and Democrat Chris Coons, of Delaware, would boost that to $60 million annually.

More On The Myth Of Lincoln, Secession And The 'Civil War'

Introduction: Thomas DiLorenzo is an American economics professor at Loyola University Maryland. He is also a senior faculty member of the Ludwig von Mises Institute and an affiliated scholar of the League of the South Institute, the research arm of the League of the South, and the Abbeville Institute. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Virginia Tech. DiLorenzo has authored at least ten books, including The Real Lincoln: A New Look at Abraham Lincoln, His Agenda, and an Unnecessary War (2003),Hamilton's Curse: How Jefferson's Arch Enemy Betrayed the American Revolution and What It Means for Americans Today(2009), How Capitalism Saved America: The Untold History of Our Country, From the Pilgrims to the Present (2005), Lincoln Unmasked: What You're Not Supposed To Know about Dishonest Abe (2007) and most recently, Organized Crime: The Unvarnished Truth About Government (2012). Thomas DiLorenzo is a frequent columnist for LewRockwell.com, lectures widely and is a frequent speaker at Mises Institute events.

Daily Bell: Remind our readers about one of your central intellectual passions, which is confronting academic "Lincoln revisionism." Who was Lincoln really and why have you spent so much of your career trying to return Lincoln's academic profile to reality?

Thomas DiLorenzo: Lincoln mythology is the ideological cornerstone of American statism. He was in reality the most hated of all American presidents during his lifetime according to an excellent book by historian Larry Tagg entitled The Unpopular Mr. Lincoln: America's Most Reviled President. He was so hated in the North that the New York Times editorialized a wish that he would be assassinated. This is perfectly understandable: He illegally suspended Habeas Corpus and imprisoned tens of thousands of Northern political critics without due process; shut down over 300 opposition newspapers; committed treason by invading the Southern states (Article 3, Section 3 of the Constitution defines treason as "only levying war upon the states" or "giving aid and comfort to their enemies," which of course is exactly what Lincoln did). He enforced military conscription with the murder of hundreds of New York City draft protesters in 1863 and with the mass execution of deserters from his army. He deported a congressional critic (Democratic Congressman Clement Vallandigham of Ohio); confiscated firearms; and issued an arrest warrant for the Chief Justice when the jurist issued an opinion that only Congress could legally suspend Habeas Corpus. He waged an unnecessary war (all other countries ended slavery peacefully in that century) that resulted in the death of as many as 850,000 Americans according to new research published in the last two years. Standardizing for today's population, that would be similar to 8.5 million American deaths in a four-year war.

Victims Track Cell Phone Right to Thief

Stanley Darnell Harris
On June 2, 2013, at approximately 2:15 a.m. Ocean City Police responded to 117 49th Street in
reference to the theft of three cell phones and credit cards. Officers arrived at the scene and met with the victims who advised that their cell phones, which were all IPhones, had been stolen and that they were tracking their whereabouts using the cellphones GPS tracking features.

During the search for the phones, which had been tracked to the 25th & 26th Street area of the Crystal Beach Hotel, one of the victims was able to activate the audible alarm feature on their stolen cell phone. Officers heard the alarm and located the source of the sound emanating from room 303.
Officers located an individual in room 303, who was later identified as Stanley Darnell Harris, 52, of Washington, DC. The phone with the alarm was coming from Harris’s pants pocket. Officers recovered the phone from Harris and determined it was one of the three stolen cell phones. While on scene, officers recovered the two other stolen cell phones and two wallets belonging to the victims.

In addition to the stolen phone, Harris was found to be in possession of a fictitiously altered Military identification. Harris was arrested and charged with the following:

· Theft under $100.
· Possession of a fraudulently altered military identification.

Harris was seen by an Ocean City District Court Commissioner and transferred to the Worcester County Jail on a $5,000 bond.

Drunken Driver Crashes into Ocean City Municipal Bus

Maxwell J. Mosscrop
On June 2, 2013, at approximately 2:45 a.m. Ocean City Police and EMS responded to the area of 7th
Street and Philadelphia Avenue, in reference to a motor vehicle collision involving an Ocean City municipal bus and a car which fled the area.

The initial investigation revealed that a City bus was travelling south on Philadelphia Avenue at 7th Street when a vehicle traveling west on 7thStreet attempted to cross Philadelphia Avenue, failing to stop at the stop sign striking the bus. The vehicle then struck an unoccupied parked vehicle and then fled the scene.

Police broadcast a lookout for the vehicle involved in the crash and a Worcester County Sheriff’s Deputy who was patrolling in Ocean City located the vehicle a short time later at 13thStreet and St. Louis Avenue. The Death Of An Outrageous American Fraudster Raises A Tantalising Question... Was LBJ Behind Kennedy's Assassination?

Forget the Soviets, the CIA or the Mafia. Of all the extraordinary theories that have swirled around the 1963 assassination of President John F Kennedy, surely the most outrageous — and intriguing — is that he was killed on the orders of his own Vice President, Lyndon Baines Johnson.

As recently as 2003, a Gallup poll found that nearly 20 per cent of Americans believed that ‘LBJ’ had some hand in the assassination of the man he went on to succeed in the White House.

It is an astonishing claim to make of any U.S. President, but all the more startling given the peculiarly tragic circumstances of Kennedy’s murder.

The snapshot of Johnson being sworn in as President hours later on board Air Force One, with a stony-faced Jackie Kennedy by his side, must be one of the most emotive images in U.S. political history.

Beached Whale on Assateague Island

The other day Christopher Battersby was finishing up surf fishing at Assateague Island with his friends, as they were leaving the beach, they spotted a beached whale near mile marker 24. He jumped out of the truck and his friends AJ and Amanda started taking pictures They called the rangers and he immediately jumped in the surf to help the whale. He said … ”I didn’t even think I just reacted, jumped in, and started pushing. The whale was beached head first, I helped turn it around, and pushed it back into the surf. I thought about getting help from anyone else on the beach, but just reacted and tried to help. I did mash my foot a bit, but it is just bruised Eventually I had it headed back to sea, once past the waves we lost sight of it after 20 minutes. It was about 15-16 feet long, black with a squared head and long fins. Unfortunately I was told later that evening the whale beached itself again and did not survive”.

Personally I think Chris did a good thing trying to help this animal, other rescue organizations may say different, but when we see another creature in need of immediate help many times we just react. Usually whales beach themselves for a reason, such as being sick or injured. I know many fellow anglers that would have tried to do the same thing, no one wants to see a fish out of water so to speak. He tried his best to help this whale, without any thought of himself. Calling the rangers was a good move, and what everyone should do if you ever encounter one of these creatures or any other marine animal in trouble. Also contacting the MERR institute stranding team is a good idea in Delaware as well, and if in Maryland contact the National Aquarium in Baltimore, Marine Animal Rescue Program. I think Chris did a good thing regardless of the end result. He cared and he tried, had no one been out there this never would have been reported. If anyone ever encounters a stranded marine animal please contact the folks that can help.

Obama Orders New Economic Sanctions On Iran

Turning the screw on Iran and its nuclear program, the Obama administration imposed new sanctions Monday on Iran's currency and auto industry, seeking to render Iranian money useless outside the country and to cut off the regime from critical revenue sources.

The executive order from President Barack Obama broadens an already concerted and multifaceted sanctions campaign aimed at crippling Iran's economy, forcing it to comply with international demands that it prove its nuclear program is peaceful. The U.S. believes Iran is working to develop nuclear weapons, a charge that Iran denies.

Officials described the move as part of a dual-track effort to offer meaningful negotiations to the Iranian regime while continually upping the economic stakes.

Chatting At Cocktail Parties

Despite sequestration, Congress is offering staffers courses on chatting at cocktail parties, managing their credit score and how to get a good night's sleep on the taxpayer's dime. In our Congressional Spotlight sponsored by CenturyLink, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) is asking Democratic and Republican leaders to cut it out. In letters to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev), House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and others, Coburn says Congress needs to lead by example. He notes Congress gave itself a 72-percent budget increase in fiscal 2012, although it's done less work in Washington. He takes issue with the Capitol's on-site barber, shoe shine and gift shops.
