Maybe we should protest cameras at ATM's and in banks, at Wal-Mart etc. They are all for one thing....to catch people that break the law. Now we are going to "protest" people being accountable to the law by breaking the law and destroying private property. Why exactly is it okay to break the law and exceed the speed limit by over 12 mph? School Zone or not, it is illegal. Many of you complain because he vehicle owner gets the ticket. What happens with a parking ticket? The car gets it. Nobody has had an uproar over that and it has been the way it has been done for 75 years. Don't speed and don't lend your car to people that speed or be prepared for a ticket. Would you all be happy for your taxes to increase so more officers can be hired to babysit motorists that have no regard for the rules of the road? Driving is privilege, NOT a right. The number one cause of motor vehicle accidents is driving too fast for conditions. The actual problem is that the people that have been able to get away with speeding because they know the cops are far too busy, now can't have their way. If you disagree with a speed limit, there is a way to request the speed to be analyzed. The Federal Highway Administration recommends that speed limits be established within 5 mph of the 85 percentile speed. All of you that live in subdivisions that believe that everyone should follow the speed limit except for you, or have some crazy notion that it is people from "outside" of your subdivision are delusional. Most of the people that get pulled over in subdivisions are the ones that asked for radar to be set up. You can't pick and choose which streets you can follow the rules and which you can't.

It is not much better when practiced by those I normally agree with. Speed limits, and the evolving technologies to enforce them, are just not that big a deal.

I like this "user fee" that we have with these cameras. Let the lawbreakers help to fund the police departments. I don't break the law, let those that do pay for the enforcement.

I may be wrong, but I don't think grant money is involved. I believe the owner of the cameras split the proceeds with the city. A portion of the "fine" goes to the police department.
Request a trial if you get a ticket. Make it more expensive for them then they are going to collect in fines.

Maybe that's why there are murders and rapes going on in Salisbury, because there certainly isn't a damn cop around when a REAL crime is being committed.

No child has any business crossing that road. If you look on the opposite side where the school actually sits, there are no cameras or police.

I see nothing wrong with the cameras. They cost the taxpayers zero, the proceeds they produce comes from people that break the law and fund things that otherwise would require more tax money, they keep the cops from babysitting on the side of the roads and put them on more serious things. What exactly is your issue other than some of you are obviously upset because you have been busted for travelling 12 MPH OVER the speed limit? They should be allowed everywhere. Good for technology. Some of you people complain to complain. How many of you actually know the facts about these cameras? How many of you showed up at the meetings when the various councils passed the resolutions to authorize their use? How many of you even know who voted for them or even when they were passed? Maybe you should get involved in your government. If you dont, deal with what happens.

Set them at 70 and they should be good for any state....or better yet, why not place a wireless device at the beginning of speed zones that will communicate with the computer in the car and automatically adjust the governor in the engine? Seems very possible to me...

ReplyDeleteHere's the deal, if citizens break any laws no matter how insignificant we are punished to the max. Obama can violate his oath, violate the constitution, break laws on a daily basis and there is never a consequence. People really do need to stand up and demand change. A good start would be recalling most of our elected officials because they rarely do what is best for the citizens, only what is best for themselves.
ReplyDeleteI live in the state of Florida. There are no speed cameras. We have red light cameras that were supposed to help stop accidents at intersections. Guess what they don't. People that are going to run a light do so cameras or not. Anyone speeding that is going to hit a child is going to do so camera or not. Many of these cameras are not accurate and if you go to court you can beat them as proven by many that have. Several judges want to make them unconstitutional. Florida is in the process of passing legislation to remove the red light cameras. The problem seems to be a human one. What idiot isn't going to slow down when they see kids crossing the street. We all grew up without these cameras and most of us were not hit by cars. People have changed and just don't care. There would be no need for these things if people went back to acting like caring human beings.

I have lived here for 25 years I was unaware that we had such an epidemic of children being hit by cars. These cameras are only for revenue. Why don't we just put up a camera everywhere someone is hit by a car. Government folks snow alot of you by pulling the "kids" string. I mean who wants to hurt kids. Why don't we get these cameras to ticket for seat belts and cell phone use. just think of all the money we are leaving on the table. Another point is that we have had these cameras for a while. I havent seen a real reduction in crime because the officers time can be used for more important things. This whole thing is just another tax or fee not to mention the other info that is being gathered like travel patterns but hey most of you don't mind if they read your emails or listen to phone calls either..what's the point...freedom and liberty matter

ReplyDeleteSo the solution was to take a picture of a speeding car and send it to the owner of the car, not the driver who was speeding. So the person driving the car keeps on speeding through the school zone. Was the car stopped? Nope. Would it be better for a cop to witnessed the speeder and stop them on the spot? Yes. Think the cop would write a ticket to the owner of the vehicle and not the driver? Nope. Cameras are no good in the drug dealing areas because there is no money to be made. How can a law be made that fines the owner and not the violator? Plain and simple. People are just that stupid to let them do it.

ReplyDeleteThese speed cameras are obviously not popular, however, they have been effective. I have received 5 or so tickets from them. Not thrilled but guess what, I DO slow down in those areas. When you slow down, not doubt its much safer.... youre more aware of your surroundings and you have more time to react. Im certain this is the same outcome with everyone else so clearly this is effective. Answer this, If a real police officer was sitting there everyday taking radar, would you still complain? Would you spray paint their car? Would you feel the same way? Would you prefer a higher fine and points added?

You are promoting crime (vandalism/destruction of property) because you are upset that you were or might have the chance to get caught committing another crime (speeding) and have to pay a fine. What is so glorifying about speeding thought school zones? Why get upset about it? You have gotten away with it for so long, all the sudden you are caught and you think its wrong you are penalized? Why do you feel so entitled?
Who cares where the money goes. The cameras pay for themselves. I would much rather have a uniformed police officers attention aimed towards more serious matters.
Everyone has their opinions about crime levels in Salisbury and the illusion of poor police reaction or activity. You cant blame the police because some unstable kid pulls a gun and shoots 2 people and then himself or deals drugs. Even if an officer were driving down that road during that time, how would it make a difference? Its the people in Salisbury that are the problem, not law enforcement. Everyone should take a minute to reflect where your aggressions and attentions are focused. Nobody is perfect. It feels much better to pass the buck then admit the truth.

It took you 5 tickets to realize you were going too fast in a school zone? They don't sound that effective to me but it sure sounds like its working out well financially for the town!
In the morning when schools in there so much traffic its impossible to speed same with when school lets out. So the only time possible to speed is when kids are not around.

Youre making is sound like everyone that abides by the law is bending over. They make laws for reasons more than profit. How can you say this doesnt help the schools. Slower drivers = safer conditions. Me being a parent makes sense to me.
Want to get a point across? Want to make a difference? Dont speed! If these cameras do not generate tickets which leads to funds, then their mission has failed and we prevail.
For those that are so concerned about following the law I would say to you "get upset over our president that breaks the laws of our country every day". Spray painting a object is a minor misdemeanor. What Obama does is unconstitutional and treasonous. Get your priorities straight and start worrying about our country instead of some kid spray painting a box on the sidewalk.

I’ve researched these cameras extensively because I got tickets when I wasn’t speeding. I read the law, researched errors, math and technology behind the cameras. I read proposals/contracts for other municipalities. I researched arguments for/against the devices. These are cash generating systems.
ReplyDeleteThough, whether you agree with cameras and/or the revenue is not my point. I see good and bad. What doesn’t seem to be discussed here are erroneous citations (a likely source for the vandalism). Each citation should be reviewed for plausibility. That’s not happening in my observations. Camera may achieve their stated purpose, but can’t be fully trusted.
For every ticket received, I’ve proven I was not exceeding the 12 MPH threshold, even within the timing margin of error. I’ve requested court dates, been issued dates and my tickets were voided before a hearing. Similar events happened to others. Some paid hundreds before understanding what was wrong. I’ve only talked to limited residents. At least one machine has been removed and tickets refunded en masse because of unexplained errors. They should not be blindly trusted and the law understands this by providing mechanisms for human review.
I’m not getting people out of valid tickets. If evidence shows speeding, I suggest paying. So far each citation I’ve suggested contesting has been voided. No court hearing. The question to ask is, “Why were the citations issued if the law requires proper review first?” In my opinion it’s easier (more profitable) to only review contested citations rather than all. Any citation not contested is profitable. Any citation contested and clearly not a violation risks profit by demonstrating failings in the system. The for-profit operator doesn’t want this showing up on the record.
From the Maryland Coastal Dispatch 8/12/2013 are some statements demonstrating errors do happen:
“Though the camera was checked and no obvious problems were discovered, the Sheriff’s Office made the decision to refund all citations issued by that camera for the week the peak occurred. . .”
“Councilman Joe Holloway stated Red Speed has captured drivers going 70 to 80 mph in neighborhoods that, following a review, Sheriff Mike Lewis and County Attorney Edgar Baker have found to be impossible to drive that fast in those areas.”
Note: Brekford operates the photo boxes and Red Speed is the mobile SUV system.

we had red light cameras installed in spokane to make us "safer". instead of utilizing them for that purpose, they shortened the time for the yellow light(to almost non-existent) to maximize the amount of revenue generated by people running red lights. They caused accidents, and people DIED. so throw away this safety BS. Its only about money.

This is a joke comment, right? Nearly all traffic laws, and all red light and speed cameras, are ways politicians extract money from citizenry. Neither speeding cameras, nor red light cameras, increase safety. These two things, as do most traffic tickets, are simply used as a way for politicians to take ever more money from citizens.
First for the record, I have never received a ticket from a red light or speed camera. With that said, are all you Anonymous people who support these cameras nuts! Chicago just added many of these speed/red light cameras for the sole purpose of revenue. Side impact crashes are reduced but rear end collisions have increased and the overall fatality numbers are about the same. Wake up people! I was in law enforcement for 12 years and the main purpose of our department was issuing citations not for safety but for county revenue. Why are ticket prices set to where they are at? Painful but at a price point where the courts are not flooded with people taking time off work and disputing them. Its all about the money!
