SALISBURY, Md. (WJZ)– Hundreds of people showed up for house parties in Salisbury and chaos followed. Beer cans were thrown at police—and that’s not all.
Mike Hellgren explained police had to use pepper spray to break up the rowdy crowd.
Police responded to what they called an “unsafe situation.” They’re still looking for those who threw full beer cans at officers.
Huge off-campus house parties in Salisbury spilled outside and out of control. Police say 600 people showed up, a number fueled by social media. It caused alcohol-soaked chaos.

Two warnings to disperse then bring out the rubber bullets. Sick and tired of antics like this. These youngsters need to be taught that there are guidelines to be met. Look at the havoc that occurs after a athletic contest with kids setting fires, overturning cars, etc. Should no be tolerated and controlled with what ever force it takes.
ReplyDeleteAs usual an idiot college student was interviewed and guess what? "The police overreacted". Thank God for the college Salisbury would be nothing without it. My *as!
ReplyDeleteAllow drinking on campus were else can they go...
ReplyDelete9:09. Why do they "have to" drink. Aren't they here to get an education?
DeleteI agree.. the increase in the drinking age has had some negative effects..
ReplyDeletethe old saying you can die for your country at 18 but not have a drink--
I drank on campus and there was never any of these issues.
Except when Mike Mammano got killed playing that game where they jump out of the dorm window to grab a tree branch. I think that was an issue 9:16.
DeleteI didn't realize college kids still lived on smith an hazel ave. I thought the 4-2 law had forced them out to make room for the ghetto
ReplyDeleteReally? Throwing beer cans at officers? Fine- the cops should have a "do not respond" policy when these little turds call because they get robbed or assaulted.
ReplyDeletePerhaps your MAYOR should re think the City's agreement with any and ALL SU Student Parties. Laws obviously have done NOTHING to curb this problem.
ReplyDeletePerhaps its time the Mayor have the SU Police respond to ALL SU Student parties throughout the City/County.
IF SPD has to respond, the City should BILL SU for their services.
After all, the Mayor wanted to create a Lockout Ordinance against ALL businesses and property owners, why not SU?
SU PAYS NO TAXES! Now, you tell me, who's actually abusing City resources???
Joe, I think we all know what happened with the election. A "fix" as such couldn't have been pulled off without the aid of the Almighty S.U.
ReplyDeleteJoe, only a small sliver of SU is actually in the city.
ReplyDelete@Jack Richards. Two warnings and bring out rubber bullets? For drinking? Was there any evidence of beer cans being thrown? Where there couches burned? Cars flipped? The crowd looked rather subdued on the police video. "What ever force it takes" to stop these kids from chugging a natty light? You sir are out of your mind.
ReplyDeleteNo doubt Salisbury PD would rather mind college kids than church street or worry about cleaning up the vagrants that roam this small city.
anonymous 10:10, Please do tell EVERYONE viewing these comments WHO actually responds to the majority of SU related calls. I rest my case. Also, I carefully worded my comment stating, "Perhaps its time the Mayor have the SU Police respond to ALL SU Student parties throughout the City/County".
ReplyDelete@ 10:12
ReplyDeleteFirst, many of the students were drinking underage.
Second, the police subdued the situation BEFORE cars got flipped and things burned. Don't forget about past parties of this nature.
Third, Smith Street is the most dangerous neighborhood in Salisbury. Period. Check the crime maps that the city publishes. The students should be thankful nobody got shot or robbed.
Its probably those darn Delta Tau Chi frat boys again. "Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son."
ReplyDeleteWhy are we just hearing details about this today? The incident happened Saturday. It took WBOC and the Daily Disgrace three days to get any coverage at all. Don't we deserve better from our official media news sources?
ReplyDeletethe university and its students should pay millions in restitution to the neighborhood and the neighbors for what day and its students have done to it over the years.families have chosen to leave because they don't want their children exposed this behavior, property is damaged it's a nightmare and Salisbury University should do something and she take charge of their student.
ReplyDeleteThis is going on all over the county. our neighbor hood has 2 houses owned by a local slumlord, that he bought in foreclosure in what is a really or was a really nice neighborhood. He's put 4 college punks in each one. 4 of them female in one. all of whom are highly praised athletes on their volleyball team, one a scholar. But nonetheless, they have no clue how to fit into a residential neighborhood. They are a danger to the children. They are drunks, keep the neighborhood up. constant cars coming and going, up to 10 at a time at the house.. speeding. Squealing tires.
ReplyDeletePunks. The sheriffs department turns a blind eye, and Mike Lewis knows of the problems. And it's only spreading.
anyone who has pictures or videos of this should send them to Joes so that they can be posted. People need to understand just how I aggregeous this was. it happens all the time but no one is talking about it.
ReplyDeletejoe,
ReplyDeleteCurious does the college get 2 strikes and you out two?
PS Stop calling these college "KIDS" they are ADULTS, and its time the college Expels some of these fools to make a example out of them.
ReplyDelete@9:38
ReplyDeleteThey already have that policy. SUPD doesn't do a darn thing about real crime. Might as well rename that department the Party Patrol.
SU has a huge economic impact on the region. It is unfortunate that the students at his party got out of hand. I drank in college and grew up to be contributing memeber of society. Salisbury is by no means a colleg town, like College Park, Towson or Pen State. I hope that there can be common ground between SU and the city.

ReplyDeleteSorry students, but when college kids move into the neighborhoods, you cause trouble, a great deal of noise, litter (beer cans, bottles, etc.), parking congestion, and generally destroy the peace and quiet of property owners who pay taxes.
You are attending school to learn and prepare for your careers, not party central. Your parents worked long and hard to make enough money to send you to school and you waste their efforts on your behalf on drunken parties destroying property...very intelligent.
Home owners don't like SU students in their neighborhoods because of their behavior. The college can put a PR spin on it by the "helping clean-up the neighborhoods", "raking leaves" ect. but that doesn't change the facts. It just helps with damage control publicity for the college.
Yes, college kids are away from their parents control and get wild because no one is watching them and they don't answer to mom and dad. That doesn't mean you still shouldn't honor your parents who are footing the bills. Act like responsible semi-adults if you want to be taken seriously.
You, the party kids, give the honest hard working students that have to work, study, and maybe take care of a family a bad name and image. I feel sorry for them. The party-animals we can all live without.
SU needs to be a college that actually teaches rather than a landfill of patrons looking for recognition. In the end, the students haven't really developed well. Their behavior is your verification.
This seems to be a yearly event. The last 2 years have not gone very well. Maybe the college would let them use the stadium to have their party instead of a city street.
ReplyDeletecreate a fraternity and sorority row like a lot of campuses. It provides housing and keeps a party this size in one area.
ReplyDeleteI used to live in two college neighborhoods, and I never had a problem with the students. I treated them with respect, and they did the same for me.
ReplyDeleteI would keep watch over their houses during breaks (actually chased away suspicious people a couple times). They did a great job of complying with reasonable requests that they be good neighbors. And one house kept the mailbox empty and front lawn mowed while I was on vacation.
The summer I moved in, I would find a crack pipe or other bad things on my lawn every few weeks. When the students were in their houses, all that stuff stopped. It's better to have a porch full of drunks as witnesses to scare away the riffraff at night than a crackhead a few feet away from your child's open window.
Worst I ever dealt with was somebody puked on my car. The party hosts noticed it and took it upon themselves to wash the car the next morning. I didn't even realize it until they asked if they could use my hose to clean up their mess.
I'm not saying that every house is responsible, but of the 8 or so that I dealt with around me they all made acceptable neighbors. Kindness and respect go a long way. Welcome them to the neighborhood when they arrive, and keep the dialogue open with them during their stay on your street. Don't be afraid to ask for compliance when they get out of hand. If they are hanging out and offer you a beer, accept the act of kindness and spend some time chatting with them. If their lawn looks like crap and they just moved in, maybe they need a mower. Lend yours, and often they'll mow your lawn as thanks. :)
If their judgement skills fall out of line it's more likely that they are still practicing being on their own and thinking of others than any malicious intent that you may perceive. You probably don't have to call the cops - just walk over and let them know how they are affecting you. Most of these students want to be good neighbors. Help them become the person they are learning to be by giving them a great example to live up to.
9:18--Many of the well connected slumlords were able to get "EXEMPTIONS" from the 4-2 law when it first was implemented. GNI, Insley, Captain Investments, Eric Davis, Bill Martin , Stu Leer etc. etc. etc. all were granted exemptions from the law. You can thank the zoning appeals board. Jake Day was recently on that board wondered why no one ever asked if he had voted to exempt any more properties. Why aren't the landlords partly responsible for the damage cost of these "gatherings" as well??????
ReplyDeleteAs an alumnus 96' and former SU partier, I have gotten my company to recruit at SU. We have hired 15 qualified hard working grads and interviewed about 50 over the past 5 years. Not all are bad, and not all that drink in college turn out to be degenerates.
ReplyDeleteSalisbury University needs to house ALL of their students on campus. The slum lords get big bucks by renting these houses etc and don't really care about the residents that live in the area! I know Salisbury slum lords don't want to hear this but they do not live in these areas and don't care! Our mayor and council majority are up the slum lords butts so don't expect it to change but it just goes to show all the regular residents of this city are chopped liver. Shameful that our city resources as well as our police have to endure such craziness! Make an ordinance or whatever you have to do that these students are NOT allowed to live off campus!!
ReplyDelete2:12....OK, have ALL students live no campus. Where? I can hear your response, "they need to cut their enrollment." Right? Sounds good but the State of Maryland mandated that SU "grow." Take that one up with the Governor. To every commentor who says that students are here to learn and thats it. Sounds honorable. Did you ever attend or throw a party? Never? WOW! You sure are an angel. I agree, students are ADULTS and not kids and should be held accountable. The problem lies in many places. They cant drink on campus, no matter what age they are. Plus, as one commentor said, you can die for your country at 18 but dont dare have a beer. I really need to know how that makes sense. I say one of those ages needs to change. Pick one, just change it. Blaming SU is stupid. Put the blame on the few ADULTS where it belongs (and their parents for raising idiots).
ReplyDeleteDistrict 2 could have changed it--but they fell for the allure of Jake Day and Jim Ireton, once again they got suckered. Well District 2 if anyone will feel the impact of more owner occupied turned student/section 8 rental it is YOU. You voted the "boys" in and you get what you deserve.
ReplyDeleteToo bad that the police don't have water cannons like they use in Europe to break up "events" like this one.
ReplyDeleteI live a road over from the party. The zoo has gotten out of control these past 2 years. A party (10people or so) used to be ok. Now parties are not a party until it hits 50 people. The noise and trash is stupid. I have put up with it for long enough. I am tired of picking up beer cans. I am tired of people peeing on the front lawn. I am tired of the yelling screaming and the music. I really hate to do this, but I am going to start calling the Police for every little party or infraction that I see. Maybe these college KIDS will begin to learn something called respect.
ReplyDeleteI have reliable information that everyone's favorite City Councilman Jakey Day was at one of these house parties with his fiancee and her college friends.
ReplyDeleteI dont know which is worse...partying students or fully mature (not age 18-22) adults calling for rubber bullets, expulsion and water cannons.
ReplyDelete@3:50 You are either a student or one of the many parents that never taught their little sperm cells to respect authority. Why is it so hard to understand that when a complaint is filed and the police respond, those causing the complaint should comply and do as told ie: break up the problem that is causing the complaint. If you are able to read newspapers or watch news on tv, you should know that there is a huge amount of disrespect for authority, be it teachers, LEOs, parents etc. And if you cannot see this you have your head up your rectum.
ReplyDelete350 whats your address so we can set up a mob in front of your house?

I remember that incident when he missed and landed on the AC unit below. I think his brother was a student on campus as well.

What is a "member" of society?
What is a "colleg" town?
Where is "Pen" State?
Where did you say you went to college? Did you graduate? What do you contribute to society?
Yep, I'm sure you spent more time drinking in college than you did studying.
My question is why were the police not called before the crown got to 600? In our neighborhood we called when there was 50-100 in a single house. Because you could hear them and the music from inside everyone else's house and of course they would tumble out in the streets, climb on the roofs and it is a miracle that someone wasn't killed in their drunken frenzies, or die over over intoxication. There are major questions still to be asked about why it continued so long!
ReplyDelete4:08 Dear God I hope you are not in law enforcement. Your comment was obnoxious.
ReplyDeleteHa haha you voted for even more of the slumlord tactics suckers???salisbury and md gets what they deserve when voting for dumbocrsts
ReplyDelete@5:55 Was an LEO years ago not that has anything to do with it. Guess you cannot see the path that this country is taking. Guess you agree with the complete disrespect for authority that exists with many????? If so, you are an idiot and I swore I was not going to use derogatory terms, Excuse me but sometimes it is necessary
ReplyDelete@Jack K Richards, why respect an authority that has does not offer respect in return?
ReplyDeleteEvery time one of these posts pops up its nothing but a bunch of old people crying the proverbial "get off my lawn." People from Salisbury calling college students degenerates? Now that's just funny considering the rest of Maryland considers Salisbury to be the arm pit of the shore.
I wish Salisbury would move the campus, why associate with a town made up of criminals and cranky geezers? If you believe losing the university would not negatively impact the region then you obviously are not intelligent enough to contribute to this conversation.
SSU "is" Party Central. I have friends that came from Western Md to SSU just for that reason. Lets just say SSU has a rep.
ReplyDelete@ 7:31, that fact that you call it SSU shows your age. Every school in the UMD system has a rep, I'ts a Maryland thing. If I were going to choose a school all over again I would not have picked Salisbury to attend school, It gets old feeling like Charlton Heston stranded on a primate planet when ever you leave the safety of the campus.
ReplyDeleteAlright. The Salisbury University Police's jurisdiction is limited to the campus. They may assist other agencies but, just as a berlin police office cannot sit on a busy street in salisbury and trap people with a radar gun, the Salisbury University Police are also limited to their respective jurisdiction.
ReplyDeleteI am a student but I don't condone the behavior of the those that were causing the problems (which, i can promise, was not all 700 participants or whatever the number actually is). That being said, I also disagree with the manner in which the police attempted to disperse the crowd. In fact, two of the individuals harmed by the macing weren't even students but rather a father and his young daughter.
So, in keeping with my original point, it's apparent to me that anyone suggesting that Salisbury City "bill SU for all student-related police calls" is, quite simply, close-minded and illogical. This entire problem is being perpetuated by this type of thinking. Instead of holding the individual responsible, we punish the masses. Furthermore, Salisbury University educates people. They do not sit us down, teach us how to perform keg stands, and then turn us loose in the streets to reek havoc.
So, in closing, I apologize on behalf of my fellow students for those that took something fun a bit too far. However, I implore the readers of this blog to entertain more reasonable and logical responses to issues such as these. Students are not Salisbury's only problem, friends. The 700 person block party produced 0 deaths and 0 injuries excluding those inflicted by the police via their mace canons. However, lest we forget that someone was just murdered on Smith Street not too long ago. Haven't heard much about that...Priorities.
For what reason were they throwing projectiles at POLICE?
ReplyDeleteThey are all F.I.A.+ FUTURE INMATES of AMERICA...
Dear 8:16. Thank you for being reasonable. However, the university has long shown too much tolerance for this kind of thing.
ReplyDeleteGreat, there were no deaths or injuries. Because the bottles and cans MISSED their targets - the police officers. Assaulting an officer is a serious offense.
Perhaps you are not old enough to remember the deaths at SU from binge drinking over the years. We do.
Perhaps you are not aware of the elderly couple who were terrorized when a 2 x 4 went through their front window into their living room. Drunk lacrosse players.
The gardens ruined and trampled and urinated on. The property damage to boats, cars.
The party ended with 0 deaths and 0 injuries because THE POLICE DID THEIR JOBS and broke it before the drunk morons on the roofs had an opportunity to fall off and break their necks.
You talk about the murder on Smith Street. We remember. We remember the one across from Bennett, too. The police that were targets of the bottles and cans are the same police force who caught those murderers.
Thank you for apologizing for your fellow students. They are the ones who should do the apologizing, not you. And that is the problem. Year after year, the consequences are so minor or so few affected, that the students don't take it seriously. It's just another cool story to tell their friends when they go drinking next time.
You are right these students aren't Salisbury's only problem. But when they become a problem, they take police away from doing the "more important" work. Because this many people out of hand are a danger to themselves and those around them.
If you do not understand that, then that is part of the problem.
8:16, read about the lucky 14-year-old in Ocean City in the post below.
ReplyDeleteThen you will know it was just a matter of time and luck for some student at that party.

Um... Dumb, Dumb.. you are forgetting one key common denominator! Who do you think brought the partying college students to Smiff Skreet? I will give you three guesses and the first two don't count. Ok, here you go: the Slum Lords!
Also please don't forget these same illegal voting college students voted for Jake Day and Jim Ireton in the recent election. See how quickly Jim Ireton turned on another group of "friends" and supporters like he has always done. When will you people learn.
The drinking age should be 18. You want this kind of thing to stop? The only way to do that is to lower the drinking age. Allow 18 year olds to grow up and learn to drink at a bar responsibly. Not only would students be given the opportunity to prove themselves worthy. We would weed out the drunks and drunk drivers quickly, students would grow up much faster, and the economy (local bars, restaurants, etc.) surrounding universities would boom. The US system is backwards. Take freedoms away, people become dependent on the system. Give more freedom to individuals, they will learn how to properly manage that freedom.

Can someone tell me where SSU is located? Last time I checked our local university was called SU (Salisbury University).
You can change the name but the song remains the same. IDIOTS! If you're an SU student and you're not from this community go home and pull this crap there.
DeleteWhat 5 police agencies assisted Salisbury city police?
ReplyDelete10:03 Wow, such an intelligent comment.
ReplyDeleteBan colleges, after all the parties the little turds throw are destructive. How proud their parents must be and what lovely additions they will make to society. SMH
ReplyDeleteWhy does public works have to CLEAN up for them? Their little butts needed to be out street cleaning from winder to beyond monticello early the next morning. why did mayr have to put public works at work doing the street cleaning, paying overtime? THE COLLEGE SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE! Yet mare states there's no strain on our relationship with su.
ReplyDeleteMY FOOT!
The policeman should have carded the little bastard who told him to piss off when the officer told him he had to get off the street with an open can of beer. (on the first video aired, on Winder st.)
ReplyDelete8:16pm
ReplyDeletebetcha you're against any new gun legislation...not wanting to punish the masses for the actions of a few. Be like the Marines. Your brothers will get you thru, so's not to punish them all.
@10:00pm:
ReplyDeleteHow can lowering the drinking age help in any way? These problems will just begin earlier.
If everyone underage at this gathering had been arrested,@ least fined, then we could believe something was being done. As it is the taxpayers have to pay for overtime for public works, when the college needs to be held responsible & do any cleanup required and the city has to put up with it. DUH. Something's wrong with this picture.
The college students can't handle the "freedoms" they have now. What makes you think lowering the drinking age will make you more responsible? Most of you have proven you can't handle the responsibility with your out of hand drunken parties.
ReplyDeleteIreton is going his smoke and mirrors act again. No strain between neighborhoods and SU???? Are you completely mad? or just a bad case of crazy?????
ReplyDeleteThe neighborhoods that have to put up with the SU college parties that start Wednesday nights and extend through Sunday nights have more than strain.
The noise, the trash, the property damage, peeing on private property, having sex on private property, so drunk they fall out of first floor screened-in windows. The trash collector has to get out of the truck and pick up the empty bottles because the garbage cans are over-flowing it is plain stupid. Then the mayor and council and neighborhood compliance wants to hammer the homeowner but does NOTHING TO STOP the college kids (idiots) from destroying our property.
This college has gotten too big to be located in town. They could use their patron's money and build the college out in the county where they can have all the room they need. They aren't responsible citizens and they haven't been for years and years. I'm not paying taxes for them to abuse the priviledge of not paying any taxes.
The mayor and council (little Day) better start to get a case of the smarts and wise up. The city is losing millions of tax revenue from the college. Take the burden off the paying tax paying home owner instead of increasing taxes for us.
The college should be make to pay for all damages, and all clean-up without question. I've seen small children act more responsible than these so-called educated adults...Not! Until the president of the college gets off her high horse and makes the kids responsible, this will happen over and over again.
Jakie Day at the party??? Then he should be removed from the president's position on the Council. He has demostrated he is just a irresponsible as the college kids he likes to hang out with. But then again, most of us already knew that didn't we????
ReplyDeleteWhat a waste of oxygen.
@5:14
ReplyDeleteThis is 1:18. I graduated from SU in the mid 90's (then SSU). I did drink in college and still drink today. I attended college parties maybe not as large as this one but large enough to probably make some people upset. As contributing member of society I paid over 40k in taxes last year, donated to several charities and volunteered my time teaching financial literacy. I also mentored an inner city kid to get into college. I also recruit some of these "SU punks" to work for my company. I am maybe not the best at typing but oh well. I am also a local. I am sure you and all other that are so upset live on Hazel or Smith st or right around where this party was. AGAIN it was unfortunate but these kids are not all bad. And I hope that the somehow SU and the town can come to some common ground.
514 what do you do other than troll on these blogs all day? I check this blog on my lunch break.
I'm really sorry to hear that you have to work. Sucks to be you!

(1) My brother is a Marine. You should be worshipping the ground those men and women walk on. You clearly have no concept of why you enjoy the rights and freedoms that no other country affords their citizens.
(2) You better bet every hair on your head and blade of grass in your lawn that I oppose any and all regulations that go against our constitution. If 700 college students are on your front lawn, peeing in your flower beds, breaking your windows, and disturbing your peace, I believe that you have every right to march into the epicenter of that congregation point your firearm to the heavens, and let it rip as fair warning anybody that trespasses on your property.
(3) I believe whole heartedly that individuals should deal with the consequences of their actions. I, however, will not suffer the consequences of those who chose to make bad decisions.
You are sorrily mistaken if you think that there is any merit to your little comment. You do not deserve the privilege of living in the United States of America if you refuse to honor and respect the people that die for your rights, the sacred document that outlines those rights, and the foundation of our great nation. Shame on you. I pray that something or someone will be able to enlighten your soul. And, although this might be "politically incorrect," I'll pray for you because you need it.
Blah blah blah. Keep a copy of your post 7:11. Look at it ten years from now so you can see how naive you are today. In the meantime go get educated.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone remember the death of Danny Ball? It was tragic and related to the influences of the 20% of SU students who rape and pillage our neighborhood. SU, step.up. This is a disgrace to your good students (and the degrees they earn) and to YOUR NEIGHBORS. We deserve better.
ReplyDelete@11:24 How about the 90% of locals who rape and prey upon the college students? Heh, I can make up facts too!
ReplyDeleteI love reading these comments just to see how slow Salisbury residents are.
Thank you 8:12. All the more reason to tear down the college and turn it into an amusement park or maybe a larger zoo. The income it would generate would make up for the income lost when the rich students are no longer here. Dang I'm a genius!
