Recount Underway Of Early Balloting in Rep. West's Disputed Florida Re-Election Bid

A recount of early votes is being conducted Saturday in Republican Rep. Allen West’s disputed re-election bid in Florida.
St. Lucie County is recounting all of its early-voting ballots after election officials voted late Friday in favor of the move.
County election officials made the decision just hours after a Florida circuit judge declined to order a recount in the state’s 18th congressional district, where West is seeking re-election against Democratic challenger Patrick Murphy.

Ranchers, Farmers Brace For 'Death Tax' Impact

Rancher Kevin Kester works dawn to dusk, drives a 12-year-old pick-up truck and earns less than a typical bureaucrat in Washington D.C., yet the federal government considers him rich enough to pay the estate tax -- also known as the "death tax."

And with that tax set to soar at the beginning of 2013 without some kind of intervention from Congress, farmers and ranchers like Kester are waiting anxiously.

"There is no way financially my kids can pay what the IRS is going to demand from them nine months after death and keep this ranch intact for their generation and future generations," said Kester, of the Bear Valley Ranch in Central California.

Two decades ago, Kester paid the IRS $2 million when he inherited a 22,000-acre cattle ranch from his grandfather. Come January, the tax burden on his children will be more than $13 million.

For supporters of a high estate tax, which is imposed on somebody's estate after death, Kester is the kind of person they rarely mention. He doesn't own a mansion. He's not the CEO of a multi-national. But because of his line of work, he owns a lot of property that would be subject to a lot of tax.

The Sheriff’s Office received information that Neal was leasing the Shamrock building from an Elizabeth Thorton, and was selling beer and liquor from that building. Deputies later executed a search and seizure warrant on the property and recovered liquor, beer, a sawed off pump shotgun, and a small amount of suspected marijuana. Through the investigation, the Sheriff’s Office learned that Neal did not have a business license, or a license to sell liquor or beer.  The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by agents from the Comtrollers Office, and CID State troopers from the Princess Anne Barrack.

The FHA Is Blowing Up: Bad News For The Housing Market

A very important article came out from the Wall Street Journal yesterday titled “FHA Nears Need for Taxpayer Funds,” and it outlines the serious financial problems facing the Federal Housing Administration.  For those that are unaware or need a refresher, the FHA has been the key element to the phony “housing recovery” the government has been trying to create.  In the wake of the collapse of 2008, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac blew up and what was left to pick up the pieces was the FHA.  No private player would issue loans with down payments of 3%, but this was no problem for the FHA!

Interestingly enough, a lot of the subprime borrowers that blew up the housing market the last time became the primary customers of the FHA.  Let’s see, 3% down and subprime borrowers…what could possibly go wrong?!  From the WSJ:

22 Signs That Voter Fraud Is Wildly Out Of Control And The Election Was A Sham

After what we have seen this November, how is any American ever supposed to trust the integrity of our elections ever again?  There were over 70,000 reports of voting problems on election day, and there are numerous eyewitnesses that claim that they saw voting machines change votes for one candidate to another candidate right in front of their eyes.  In several of the swing states there were counties where the number of registered voters exceeded the total voting age population by a very wide margin.  How in the world does that happen?  Some of the vote totals that were reported in some of the most important swing states were completely and totally absurd, and yet we are just supposed to accept them on blind faith without ever being able to ask any questions.  Of course the Romney campaign has already totally given up, so it isn’t as if there is any chance that the results of the presidential election could be overturned anyhow.  But if massive election fraud did take place and nobody is held accountable, what kind of message will that send for the future?  Will we ever be able to have faith in the integrity of our elections ever again?
The following are 22 signs that voter fraud is wildly out of control and the election was a sham…

#1 According to the Election Protection Coalition, voters across the United States reported more than 70,000 voting problems by 5 PM Eastern time on election day.

TRUTH IS TREASON IN AN EMPIRE OF LIES – RON PAUL’S FAREWELL ADDRESS TO CONGRESS

Farewell to Congress
This may well be the last time I speak on the House Floor. At the end of the year I’ll leave Congress after 23 years in office over a 36 year period. My goals in 1976 were the same as they are today: promote peace and prosperity by a strict adherence to the principles of individual liberty.

It was my opinion, that the course the U.S. embarked on in the latter part of the 20th Century would bring us a major financial crisis and engulf us in a foreign policy that would overextend us and undermine our national security.

To achieve the goals I sought, government would have had to shrink in size and scope, reduce spending, change the monetary system, and reject the unsustainable costs of policing the world and expanding the American Empire.

The problems seemed to be overwhelming and impossible to solve, yet from my view point, just following the constraints placed on the federal government by the Constitution would have been a good place to start.

Is The "Fiscal Cliff" A Fiction?

John Weeks: The fiscal cliff has simply been created by Congress in order to push austerity which is no solution during a recession.

TRANSCRIPT:

PAUL JAY, SENIOR EDITOR, TRNN: Welcome to The Real News Network. I'm Paul Jay in Baltimore.

Well, the election was hardly minutes old when the news media was already talking about the coming fiscal cliff. Well, just what is it, and who supposedly is about to go over it?

Now joining us from London to talk about all of this is John Weeks. He's a professor emeritus at the University of London School of Oriental and African Studies. He's an author of the books Capital, Exploitation and Economic Crisis and a soon-to-be-released book, The Economics of the One Percent. He's the founder and contributor to JWeeks.org. Thanks for joining us again, John.

JOHN WEEKS, PROF. EMERITUS, SCHOOL OF ORIENTAL AND AFRICAN STUDIES (SOAS): Well, thank you for inviting me.

Lincoln's Greatest Failure

"Every other country in the world got rid of slavery without a civil war . . . . How much would that cost compared to killing 600,000 Americans when the hatred lingered for 100 years."

~ Ron Paul to Tim Russert on "Meet the Press" in 2007

The new Steven Spielberg movie about Lincoln is entirely based on a fiction, to use a mild term. As longtime Ebony magazine executive editor Lerone Bennett, Jr. explained in his book, Forced into Glory: Abraham Lincoln’s White Dream: "There is a pleasant fiction that Lincoln . . . became a flaming advocate of the [Thirteenth] amendment and used the power of his office to buy votes to ensure its passage. There is no evidence, as David H. Donald has noted, to support that fiction". (Emphasis added).

In fact, as Bennett shows, it was the genuine abolitionists in Congress who forced Lincoln to support the Thirteenth Amendment that ended slavery, something he refused to do for fifty-four of his fifty-six years. The truth, in other words, is precisely the opposite of the story told in Spielberg’s Lincoln movie, which is based on the book Team of Rivals by the confessed plagiarist/court historian Doris Kearns-Goodwin. (My LRC review of her book was entitled "A Plagiarist’s Contribution to Lincoln Idolatry").

Obama Will Not Extend Bush-Era Tax Cuts, Economists Warn Against Austerity

Some GOP members conceded that the modest tax increase for the wealthy in the president's budget plan "is not going to break their backs."

Tensions are growing in Washington as the year-end "fiscal cliff" approaches, and in his first press conference since June, President Obama confirmed that he would not compromise on allowing Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthy to expire while extending tax cuts for the middle class.

The president's budget plan would raise $1.6 trillion in revenue, including new revenue from tax increases on Americans making more than $250,000 a year.

Congress could soon reach a familiar gridlock as a combination of tax cuts, spending initiatives and unemployment benefit extensions are set to expire on January 1.

Obama, who is expected to launch Congressional negotiations at the end of the week, said today that Congress must "provide certainty" to middle-class families making less than $250,000 year that their taxes will not go up. After that, Obama said, lawmakers can set a structure to deal with tax reform and entitlements in order to stabilize the deficit.

BP & The U.S. Govt. Held Info Back From Each Other As Oil Poured Into Gulf

It’s like a scene on some crime show where the crook gets away because the local cops and the FBI aren’t telling each other everything. Except this wasn’t some hour-long piece of TV fluff; it was a huge environmental disaster that unleashed untold amounts of oil into the Gulf of Mexico.

The Houston Chronicle’s FuelFix blog has a revealing story about recent closed-door testimony to the Justice Dept. by Marcia McNutt, head of the U.S. Geological Survey, regarding deception and secret-keeping on the part of BP and the U.S. government following the 2010 explosion and oil spill in the gulf.

Jeremy Grantham On Phosphate And Potash

Jeremy Grantham is the legendary mind behind investment firm GMO, where he predicted bubbles in Japanese stocks in 1989, U.S. stocks in 2000, and most risk assets in 2007.
But lately, nothing concerns Grantham more than climate change and its effects on commodity prices and food supplies.
He discusses it in a new piece for Nature.com:
I have yet to meet a climate scientist who does not believe that global warming is a worse problem than they thought a few years ago. The seriousness of this change is not appreciated by politicians and the public. The scientific world carefully measures the speed with which we approach the cliff and will, no doubt, carefully measure our rate of fall. But it is not doing enough to stop it. I am a specialist in investment bubbles, not climate science. But the effects of climate change can only exacerbate the ecological trouble I see reflected in the financial markets — soaring commodity prices and impending shortages.
One of the most urgent aspects of this impending crisis is the shrinking supply of fertilizer, most of which comes from just three parts of the world.

Woman Moves 10 Miles, Gets Hit With 25% Health Insurance Hike

Health insurance companies are allowed to charge different rates depending on where you live, but one would think that moving within the same region you’ve been in for more than a decade would not have a serious impact on your monthly rate. Try telling that to the woman in California who now faces an additional $1,272 in insurance premiums after moving 10 miles.

The woman tells the L.A. Times’ David Lazarusthat shortly after notifying Anthem Blue Cross about her move, she was told her monthly rate was jumping from $418 to $524. That’s on top of an annual $5,000 deductible.

How to End Blackouts Forever

Come hell or high water — and Sandy brought both to many Americans— most of us can’t get the electricity we need. More than two weeks after the storm’s departure, 25,000 homes were still without power. We live high in the Rockies and were unaffected, but a couple of Februaries ago snowstorms knocked out our neighbors’ electricity on five different days. But ours stayed on — by design. Our house’s efficient lights and appliances save most of the electricity. This shrinks the solar power system that runs our meter backwards and sells back its surplus to the grid. But unlike most solar-powered buildings, ours is wired to work with or without the grid.
That’s where the Pentagon is headed with its own power supplies. Warfighters need their stuff to work. They’ve concluded that the vulnerability of the commercial power grid is far too great to ensure mission continuity. So they’re switching to efficient use, distributed and often renewable energy sources on or near their bases, and reorganizing their wiring into “microgrids.” These neighborhood power systems normally interconnect with the larger grid around them, but can stand alone as needed, disconnecting fractally and reconnecting seamlessly.

Butterball Facing Animal Abuse Allegations Just In Time For Thanksgiving

Another Thanksgiving, another controversy starring its big bird, the turkey. An animal advocacy group is leveling claims at Butterball again, accusing the turkey-centric company of abusing and neglecting birds at some of its locations. Tis the season, after all, and no one wants their main course to come from an unhappy turkey.

Mercy For Animals, which also accused Butterball of turkey cruelty last year, said it had operated undercover in several Butterball facilities in North Carolina, and come up with evidence of cruelty and neglect.

BLAZING BROOKS: MEL SAYS 'SADDLES' COULDN'T BE MADE IN 2012

It's a good thing Mel Brooks' inspiration for "Blazing Saddles" struck in the early 1970s and not 2012. Had Brooks come up with the western genre spoof today, it wouldn't pass muster at any major studio.

Brooks himself shared that sad truth during a visit to "Jimmy Kimmel Live" last night. "Blazing Saddles" starred Gene Wilder, Cleavon Little, Harvey Korman and Madeline Kahn in a zany send up of classic western films. And while "Superbad," "Bridesmaids" and "Project X" push the boundaries of modern cinema, they couldn't compare to the outrageous gags Brooks sprinkled throughout his 1974 comedy classic.
"It couldn't be made today," Brooks tells Kimmel flatly before launching into a classic story about an early preview of the film, and how a man high up at Warner Bros. told him to make some major cuts ... or else.

HOUSE DEMS: GOP 'BATTERING,' 'MUGGING' RICE BECAUSE SHE'S A BLACK WOMAN

Today, the Democrats opened their playbook to page 213 – the section labeled “Racism and Sexism” – and read directly from it with regard to Ambassador Susan Rice. Rice has been under fire, justifiably, for lying to the American public on the Sunday after the murder of four Americans in Benghazi; President Obama has defended her in bizarre fashion, suggesting that she cannot be criticized because she is “an easy target” and was acting on his orders anyway.

Now, the Democrats of the House have decided that the real reason Americans are attacking Rice isn’t her incompetence, or her lying. It’s that she’s a woman, and she’s black.
Today, twelve female members of the House suggested that Rice was under scrutiny because she’s a black woman. “It is a shame that anytime something goes wrong, they pick on women and minorities,” said Rep. Marcia Fudge (D-OH), who will be taking over the Congressional Black Caucus. Fudge conveniently ignores that one of Rice’s main critics has been Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), who is female. She also ignores that President Obama is black, and that he has been criticized for his poor performance for years.

Hide Your Valuables Where No One Will Ever Look

The best way to keep baddies from stealing your valuables is to not own anything valuable in the first place, but that’s no fun. Instead, consider hiding your valuables in places no one will look. Jewelry box? The obvious place to keep your grandmother’s pearls. An aspirin bottle in the medicine cabinet? Not so much! And who would look for a wad of cash wrapped in foil in an old Gardenburger box in your freezer?

Other ideas compiled by Lifehacker:

In your kid’s room. Perform stuffed animal surgery and hide the item there. Hint: use a toy that isn’t your kid’s favorite, so they don’t take it anywhere.

The aforementioned aspirin bottle. You can also try a soup can or coffee can. Warning: make sure other household members know not to throw this container away. Though writing “VALUABLE STUFF – DO NOT TRASH” on it in Sharpie probably isn’t going to help.

Veterans Killed In Train Crash Were War Heroes

The four veterans killed when a freight train barreled into the parade float they were riding on were decorated military men who served on the front lines multiple times in Iraq and Afghanistan.

They survived gunshots, explosions and grenade attacks that left some with brain injuries that slurred their speech and made it difficult to walk.

One had a wife back home battling cancer while he fought through a brain injury in Iraq after an improved explosive device hit his truck.

HISTORICAL COMMENTS BY GEORGE CHEVALLIER 11-17-12

FINAL RESTING PLACE

This probably doesn’t have anything to do with the history of Salisbury but it is a poignant and humorous part of my history. It shows how things were a hundred years ago. It shows that divorce was not an option for those that thought things were not “working out”. It shows that many children were the norm on a farm before the days of planned parenthood and modern, mechanical conveniences.

My grandfather’s mother, Sallie Mary Parsons Disharoon, is the focal point of this story. She had 11 children over a span of 20 years and must have had a rather hectic life. Her husband, Samuel Frank Disharoon, was by all accounts a rather stern individual. They owned a 100 acre farm on Anderson Road(now Pemberton Drive) about two miles out of Salisbury. Life was hard in those days and children on a farm were thought of as extra hands to do the many chores that could be done by children depending on their age.

Now, Frank had died in the 1920’s and Sallie lived until January, 1944. When she was in the last days of her life, her daughters tried to comfort her by telling her that they had taken care of everything. They had seen to it that she would have a place beside her husband in Parsons Cemetery. She told them that was not her wish. She wanted to be put to rest beside her mother in the Forest Grove Cemetery east ofSalisbury. The girls said they thought she would want to be beside Frank. According to a witness to this conversation, her next words will always remain with me – “I want to be buried next to Mama in Forest Grove. I lay next to that man for forty years; I’m not laying next to him for all eternity”.

Judging by the placement of her monument, she’s not laying next to anybody. Her very lonesome grave is placed at an angle to all of the other graves in the SE corner of Forest Grove Cemetery.

IRS Cries Fiscal Cliff Blues

The Internal Revenue Service is warning Congress: the fiscal-cliff limbo is messing up preparations for tax filing season. Acting Commissioner Steven Miller sent a letter to the leaders of the Senate Finance and House Ways and Means committees. In it, he said the filing season could be disrupted substantially because of uncertainty over the Alternative Minimum Tax and expiring tax breaks. Miller said the IRS normally starts preparing for the filing season the summer before. That's when it trains customer-service employees, modifies tax forms and reprograms its technology to reflect changes in tax laws. The Wall Street Journal published Miller's letter

A Comment Worthy Of A Post 11-17-12

Joe, maybe you can contact some of the other municipalities on the lower shore and ask what they have done to help Crisfield, and then report to us. Pocomoke has sent trucks and crews to help and I understand that others have contributed in similar ways. Crisfield is the beneficiary of lots of neighborly help but of course, they need lots more.

One other problem I have noticed is that our Baltimore neighbors do not even know that towns in their own state need help. The media in the metropolitan area has focused on NY & NJ.

Publishers Notes: You are absolutely right and some of the other municipalities should be recognized.

I do know at this point that John Phoebus contacted Mayor Carl Anderton of Delmar, Maryland early on when the Town of Crisfield, (as well as Somerset County) refused to allow Public Works to help out. Carl was able to send, (I believe) 4 people from Delmar. Carl immediately contacted Mayor Jim Ireton and Jim also sent 4 people down to Crisfield. Now, I could be wrong. They may have sent a total of 4 people. Nevertheless, it was an incredible gesture and a huge help either way.

There is a reciprocal agreement between ALL Maryland municipalities in which they are bound to help other communities in such disasters and that is why Congressman Andy Harris was upset that the STATE hadn't stepped in to do more.

Beyond that, I contacted my Brother on the Western Shore last night. I told him what was going on in Crisfield and he knew absolutely NOTHING about it. He own a very large company  with quite a bit of influence in the building industry. Because there is so much need in building supplies he is going to reach out on Monday to these companies to see if they are willing to join him is helping Crisfield as much as possible.

The Main Stream media has dropped the ball. Think about it like this. O'Malley probably thinks that Crisfield doesn't have a lot of voters, therefore, who cares. Think about it. 19 days have passed and those residents are still without heat and many still without electricity. Think about all the hell O'Malley put Baltimore Gas & Electric through the past two years over extended power outages on the Western Shore. You've heard nothing of the sort in Crisfield, as if they don't exist.

IF you have any connections on the Western Shore please contacts them. Encourage them to come to Salisbury News and use the search bar in the top left hand corner and simply type in Hurricane Sandy Crisfield and let them see for themselves just how bad things are down there. Unfortunately this will be the first time many have seen this disaster.

If we join forces, including all other Blogs, together we can help and make a difference. If you know of any other municipalities that have helped please let us know in comments.
