Victims Say Abortion Doctor Scarred Them For Life

FIFTEEN-YEAR-OLD Robyn Reid didn't want an abortion. But when her grandmother forcibly took her to an abortion clinic one wintry day in 1998, Reid figured she'd just tell the doctor her wishes and then sneak away.

Instead, Kermit Gosnell barked: "I don't have time for this!" He then ripped off her clothes, spanked her, wrestled her onto a dirty surgical stretcher, tied her flailing arms and legs down and pumped sedatives into her until she quit screaming and lost consciousness, she told the Daily News yesterday.

Nicole Gaither got an abortion from Gosnell in 2001. After four days, she said, the pain was so bad she could barely walk. She returned to the clinic, where, she said Gosnell blithely told her he'd left fetal remains in her.

"Stand up! It don't hurt that bad!" he yelled at her, she said, before suctioning - without any medication - her insides.

In 2001, Davida Johnson changed her mind about aborting her 6-month fetus after seeing Gosnell's dazed, bloodied patients in his recovery room, she said. But in the treatment room, Gosnell's staffers ignored her protests, smacked her, tied her arms down and sedated her into unconsciousness, she said. She awoke no longer pregnant.

Did U.S. Agency Smuggle Guns To Mexico To Justify Its Budget?

The death of a U.S. Border Patrol agent north of Nogales, Ariz., on December 14, 2010 might turn out to be the death knell for the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, or ATF.

Allegations have surfaced suggesting that one of the guns used by Mexican bandits during the firefight in which Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was killed might have been smuggled into Mexico with the knowing assistance of ATF officials. If these allegations prove to be true, it is quite possible that the long troubled agency could be dismantled. Even if there proves to be no connection with Agent Terry's death, the scrutiny generated by an investigation could crash the agency.

There are actually four separate but connected accusations against ATF officials:

First, that they intentionally arranged to have hundreds of firearms "walked" across the U.S. border into Mexico.

Second, that they instructed U.S. gun dealers to proceed with questionable and illegal sales of firearms to suspected gunrunners.

Third, that they intentionally withheld information about U.S.-sanctioned gun smuggling from the Mexican government.

Fourth, that one of the guns ATF allowed or helped to be smuggled into Mexico was involved in the death of Agent Terry.

Md. Gov. O'Malley Considers Raising Taxes

WASHINGTON -- Hours before he presented his new budget proposals for next year, the Maryland governor told WTOP on Friday he is open to raising taxes on some common amenities.

Gov. Martin O'Malley said he would consider petitioning the state legislature to raise the alcohol and gas taxes -- two fees that have remained unchanged for decades.

He warned any potential funds raised would still fall short of stemming a $1 billion state budget shortfalls.

"I'm going to have, by Constitution, the first word on the budget," he said Friday. "But it's not going to be the last one."

O'Malley stipulated that raising these taxes "won't do the heavy lifting that's needed to close a billion dollar gap."

He also noted there are some other potential changes that might not necessarily lead to increased taxes. The gas tax is currently a flat rate of 23 cents per gallon, O'Malley said. He proposed Friday implementing an index on that tax that would keep pace with inflation.

He introduced this to the state legislature four years ago, he said, and it was "shut down pretty summarily."

Those currently involved in state governance aren't the only ones weighing in on the issue.

HISTORICAL COMMENTS BY GEORGE CHEVALLIER

Ice

Something we all take for granted in this day and age is ice. All refrigerators are electric and have a freezer within them. Some make their own ice cubes that can be readily accessed at any time. The earliest refrigerators were equipped with trays that had to be filled with water, which was then frozen to make the desired cubes.

The predecessor to the refrigerator was the ice box. This originated back in the 1800’s and was responsible for extending the life of the family’s food. It got the name “ice box” because that is what it was. The earliest ones were no more than an insulated wooden box into which ice had to be put in regularly to keep everything in it cold. A more sophisticated version made of oak and doors with brass hinges appeared in the late 1800’s and is sought after by antique collectors today. The earliest suppliers of ice were George W. Collins, who operated on the corner of Lake and W. Isabella Sts., and the Salisbury Ice Mfg. Co. that was located near the railroad tracks and the N Y P & N railroad station. There are still members of society that remember the ice man that delivered ice for the W. F. Messick Co. The ice boxes of the 1920’s were contraptions into which you had to put a piece of ice in a compartment on the top that would drip its chilling water to keep everything refrigerated. The size of the block of ice depended on the size of your ice box. Someone also had to empty the “drip pan” daily or they would have a lot of water on the floor of the kitchen. The ice company provided signs that housewives would put in the window when they needed ice, and it also indicated the size of the block of ice. The familiar tongs with which the ice man would pick up the block and sling it onto his leather covered shoulder are seen now only if you go to an ice house. The ice houses of today no longer have to deliver to residences, and most of the ice is dispensed to the many trucks hauling produce, seafood or chicken.

Usually the ice man was a welcome sight to the local children. They would flock to him for a sliver of ice to help them cool off on a hot summer’s day.

It has always amazed me the way they procured ice a hundred years ago. They would go to the frozen ponds and lakes and cut the blocks out with a saw. It would then be hauled to an ice house and stored there packed in straw until it was needed the following summer. I have never figured out why the ice didn’t melt at the first sign of warm weather. But, without any mechanical refrigeration, this was the only way to get ice for use later on.

The things we take for granted today were a very busy part of life a hundred years ago. Just think how much the world has improved in regards to what are really the necessities of life. Transportation, electricity and communication are just three of the things we take for granted. Imagine what the world would be like today if we had to live as they did a hundred years ago. Wouldn’t you like to be around in a hundred years to see what else man can improve upon? I wouldn’t!

Limbaugh Demands Obama Release Birth Certificate

Top-rated talk radio host Rush Limbaugh on Friday questioned why new Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie has not gotten support from the White House in his efforts to resolve the doubts of so-called “birthers” about Barack Obama’s place of birth.

Limbaugh also says he finds it “stunning” that Abercrombie still can’t prove Obama was born in Hawaii as he maintains.

Abercrombie has stated that he wants to put to rest assertions that Obama may not have been born in the United States and therefore is not eligible to serve as president, assertions fueled by Obama’s lack of a hospital-generated birth certificate.

But Limbaugh noted that Abercrombie now says “a hospital generated birth certificate for Obama may not exist within the vital records maintained by the Hawaii Department of Health. He said efforts were still being made to track down definitive vital records that would prove Obama was born in Hawaii.

“Remember, he started out, the whole reason for doing this, was to get it off the table so it wasn’t an election issue for 2014.

“But he’s done the exact opposite now. How many of us could get away with saying, ‘Yeah, there’s a little notation somewhere there in the archives, but we can’t find the birth certificate.’”

Over A Million Immigrants Land U.S. Jobs

Over the past two years, as U.S. unemployment remained near double-digit levels and the economy shed jobs in the wake of the financial crisis, over a million foreign-born arrivals to America found work, many illegally.

Those are among the findings of a review of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and Census Bureau data conducted exclusively for Reuters by researchers at the Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University in Boston.

Often young and unskilled or semi-skilled, immigrants have taken jobs Americans could do in areas like construction, willing to work for less wages. Others land jobs that unemployed Americans turn up their noses at or lack the skills to do.

With a national unemployment rate of 9.4 percent, domestic job creation is at the top of President Barack Obama's agenda and such findings could add to calls to tighten up on illegal immigration. But much of it is Hispanic and the growing Latino vote is a key base for Obama's Democratic Party.

Many of the new arrivals, according to employers, brought with them skills required of the building trade and found work in sectors such as construction, where jobless rates are high.

"Employers have chosen to use new immigrants over native-born workers and have continued to displace large numbers of blue-collar workers and young adults without college degrees," said Andrew Sum, the director of the Center for Labor Market Studies.

"One of the advantages of hiring, particularly young, undocumented immigrants, is the fact that employers do not have to pay health benefits or basic payroll taxes," said Sum.

From 2008 to 2010, 1.1 million new migrants who have entered America since 2008 landed jobs, even as U.S. household employment declined by 6.26 million over that same period.

Somethin' Ain't Right Here

Statement by Dr. Chiyome Fukino, M.D., Director of the Hawaii Department of Health on October 31, 2008:

"There have been numerous requests for Sen. Barack Hussein Obama’s official birth certificate. State law (Hawai‘i Revised Statutes §338-18) prohibits the release of a certified birth certificate to persons who do not have a tangible interest in the vital record."

"Therefore, I as Director of Health for the State of Hawai‘i, along with the Registrar of Vital Statistics who has statutory authority to oversee and maintain these type of vital records, have personally seen and verified that the Hawai‘i State Department of Health has Sen. Obama’s original birth certificate on record in accordance with state policies and procedures."

Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie in an interview published January 18, 2011:

Q: You stirred up quite a controversy with your comments regarding birthers and your plans to release more information regarding President Barack Obama's birth certificate. How is that coming?

A: I got a letter from someone the other day who was genuinely concerned about it; it is not all just political agenda. They were talking on Olelo last night about this; it has a political implication for 2012 that we simply cannot have.

(Abercrombie said there is a recording of the birth in the State Archives and he wants to use that.)

It was actually written I am told, this is what our investigation is showing, it actually exists in the archives, written down ...

...What I can do, and all I have ever said, is that I am going to see to it as governor that I can verify to anyone who is honest about it that this is the case.

A ‘Medical Miracle’

Well-wishers lined Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’ ambulance route to the airport Friday, cheering, waving American flags, and hoisting signs urging “Get Well Gabby!” as the congresswoman embarked on a long journey of rehabilitation already being hailed as a “medical miracle” and “divine intervention.”

It was just two weeks ago Saturday that a deranged gunman shot Giffords in the head, wounding her so severely that several  news sources initially reported she had perished. Six people died in the attack that also left 19 wounded.

A bullet penetrated Giffords’ skull and passed through her brain. Doctors report that only 5 percent of patients suffering gunshots to the head survive – and most are unresponsive and mired in deep comas.

In the hours after the shooting rampage, surgeons in Tucson temporarily removed a portion of Giffords’ skull to prevent swelling from causing further damage to her brain.

Once the risk of swelling passed, Giffords was taken off a ventilator that was helping her breathe. Her progress since then has astounded onlookers and delighted her physicians.

“I believe that Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords’ recovery, so far, is a medical miracle,” declared Marc Siegel, an associate professor of medicine and medical director at NYU Langone Medical Center, in an article posted on FoxNews.com.

“Through it all Congresswoman Giffords continues to respond to commands,” Siegel added. “A striking and optimistic fact in and of itself … divine intervention when viewed in the larger context; a sum of all the great luck and skill she's experienced so far.”

University of Arizona Medical Center doctors accompanied Giffords’ from Tucson to her new rehabilitation facility in Houston, where she will be closer to her husband and two daughters.

The doctors reported the “heart-wrenching” experience of faintly hearing the cheers of encouragement from onlookers as the ambulance, led by a police motorcycle escort, passed the crowd lining their route.

They said Giffords responded to the cheers, “smiling and at times tearing a bit. It was very emotional.”

The Rancher

A successful rancher died and left everything to his devoted wife. She was a very good-looking woman and determined to keep the ranch, but knew very little about ranching, so she decided to place an ad in the newspaper for a ranch hand.

Two cowboys applied for the job. One was gay and the other a drunk..

She thought long and hard about it, and when no one else applied she decided to hire the gay guy, figuring it would be safer to have him around the house than the drunk.

He proved to be a hard worker who put in long hours every day and knew a lot about ranching.

For weeks, the two of them worked, and the ranch was doing very well. Then one day, the rancher's widow said to the hired hand, 'You have done a really good job, and the ranch looks great. You should go into town and kick up your heels.' The hired hand readily agreed and went into town one Saturday night.

One o'clock came, however, and he didn't return. Two o'clock and no hired hand.  Finally he returned around two-thirty, and upon entering the room, he found the rancher's widow sitting by the fireplace with a glass of wine, waiting for him. She quietly called him over to her.

'Unbutton my blouse and take it off, she said. Trembling, he did as she directed. 'Now take off my boots.' He did as she asked, ever so slowly.

'Now take off my socks.' He removed each gently and placed them neatly by her boots.

'Now take off my skirt.' He slowly unbuttoned it, constantly watching her eyes in the fire light.

'Now take off my bra.' Again, with trembling hands, he did as he was told and dropped it to the floor. Then she looked at him and said, 'If you ever wear my clothes into town again, you're fired.'

Get Ready For $4-A-Gallon Gas

With the economy kinda sorta picking up, and consumers in China, India and Brazil buying cars in droves, gas prices are expected to keep going up, and may hit $4 a gallon by early spring, when Americans finish scraping the ice off of their windshields and begin planning road trips. And unlike 2008, when gas last broke the $4 barrier, only to later drop to lower prices, $4 may be a new baseline, followed by $5 gas as early as next year.

SHOREBIRDS LAUNCH 2011 HIT THE BOOKS READING PROGRAM

Over 40,000 Students on the Eastern Shore Participating

Salisbury, Md. – The Delmarva Shorebirds, class “A” affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, have officially kicked off the 2011 “Hit the Books” reading program.  The program is designed to encourage children all across the Eastern Shore to read outside of the classroom.  The Shorebirds have partnered with Sylvan Learning Center and Schwartz Orthodontics in order to organize and execute this program.

To launch the initiative, the Shorebirds, Sylvan Learning Center and Schwartz Orthodontics honored Yumin Jeong of Bennett Middle School for winning the Bookmark Design Contest.  Children from participating schools were asked to submit a bookmark design for the Hit the Books program.  Jeong’s bookmark showed an outstanding combination of artistic talent and creative spirit.  Each child will receive a bookmark featuring Jeong’s winning design.

The “Hit the Books” program has evolved into one of the biggest reading programs on the Eastern Shore.  This year, over 100 schools with over 40,000 combined students are enrolled in the program.

“We really take a lot of pride in the ‘Hit the Books’ program because of the impact that it has on all the children that participate,” said general manager Chris Bitters.  “We look forward to rewarding each child that excels in reading with a fun night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.”

The “Hit the Books” program mandates that all children read four books outside of the classroom.  Each child that reads four books receives two free tickets to a Shorebirds game during the 2011 season.  Students have until February 28 to finish all four books.

Schools will be notified shortly as to when their night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium will be.  The students will be recognized at the stadium during a pregame ceremony where each child will have the unique opportunity to parade around the field.

“We are extremely proud of the participation in this year’s reading program.  Being able to reach over 40,000 students across the Eastern Shore and to see them excited about reading is fantastic,” said Arthur Maonde of Sylvan Learning Center.  “Sylvan is looking forward to honoring these students and we the hope the Delmarva community will join us in honoring them as well.”

“Schwartz Orthodontics is extremely excited to partner with the Delmarva Shorebirds for the Hit Books Program, said Dr. Schwartz.  “We look forward to rewarding the students as they reach their reading goals.  We believe that education through literature leads to good oral hygiene and dental health.”
