What Does Bike Week Mean To Me

While I am the owner of two Harley Davidson Motorcycles, I chose the first three days to drive my car to each event this year. Lugging around my cameras and equipment, it just made life easier.

I have had no trouble whatsoever getting anywhere I want to be and my hat is tipped to ALL of the Law Enforcement Agencies taking care of traffic control in Wicomico County and Worcester County.

Some representatives from Wicomico County were concerned that Winter Place Park was too far away from where the event was originally held, (Ocean Downs). I find this statement ridiculous and let me explain why.

Maybe its just me but I enjoy getting on my Bike and going for a ride. Hanging out at the same location can quickly grow old for me and the more I can get out and do and see, the better I enjoy myself.

It's kind of like Spring Fest. You know how it is. You go to ONE location and you walk through the Inlet Parking Lot and see the same vendors over and over again, year after year. BORING!

So if you can get out and go, perfect! These 5 mile long Poker Runs, yeah, they can be fun at times but come on now, 5 miles? I'd prefer to get on my Bike from OC and head 20 miles or more to a location where there's more to see and with all hope, different.

Granted, I believe Winter Place Park has had more of a day time crowd because of the lack of beer sales. Nevertheless, that place was packed on Friday afternoon. It did slow down quite a bit Friday evening but lets face it, Winter Place Park is NOT Ocean City. We don't have places like Seacrets and from what I heard Friday night, that place was packed!

I believe Wicomico County stated that they expected to raise around $750,000.00 worth of business from Bike Week. In this economy, be happy with anything you get. Hopefully next year the Harley Davidson Shop reconsiders getting a liquor license for a few days and more of the Bar/Restaurants in Wicomico County step up to the plate earlier and start marketing their own events around the Salisbury area.

All that being said, I'd like to thank all of the people involved, especially the Bikers. I hope they enjoyed Wicomico County and Winter Place Park and I look forward to many more years of this event taking place around the Eastern Shore.

Can Our Star Wars Shield Protect Us from a New Cuban Missile Crisis?

This from Saturday's Press TV

Iran’s Foreign Minister says Washington’s missile shield project is a realization of star wars on earth which is aimed to confine Russia.

“The US missile shield is aimed at bringing Russia under control,” Manouchehr Mottaki said in a meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Moscow Friday.

The Iranian senior official described cooperation among the nations as the best way to thwart the ‘conspiracy of crisis’ in the region.
Lavrov for his part maintained that the US missile shield is aimed to contain Russia’s power, saying Moscow is ready to expand “security cooperation” with Iran and with countries in the Caucasus region to restore regional stability and tranquility.

“In addition to regional cooperation, dialogue with Europe can also be put on the agenda because of its potential and promises to establish stability and peace in the Caucasus region,” the Iranian minister continued.

Georgia launched a large-scale attack against South Ossetia last month, triggering a conflict which prompted Russia to send armed convoys and military combat aircraft to the breakaway region to protect South Ossetians, most of whom have Russian citizenship.

Georgia’s military intervention in the region resulted in the killing of Russian peacekeepers and dozens of civilians, according to the Kremlin.

Relations between Russia and the West have slumped to a tense post-Cold War low, particularly after the US sent its warships to the Black Sea to send what it calls humanitarian aid to Georgians.

Russia which blames the US for orchestrating the crisis in its backyard responded with similar measures.

On November 10-14, four Russian ships and 1,000 soldiers will hold joint military maneuvers with Venezuelan aircraft and submarines in the Caribean Sea.

The four ships will include the Peter the Great nuclear-powered guided missile cruiser and the Admiral Chabanenko anti-submarine ship, Nesterenko told a briefing in Moscow.

“The exercises will not be targeted against any third party,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Andrei Nesterenko said.

Russia has also announced that the country is renovating the Syrian port of Tartus permitting Moscow to develop and enlarge the port for a naval presence in the Mediterranean.

On Friday, Russian president Dmitry Medvedev compared the invasion of South Ossetia by Georgia to the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States.

“For Russia, August 8, 2008 was almost like September 11, 2001 in the United States.”

“The world changed almost immediately,” Medvedev added suggesting that the backwash of the short-lived armed conflict has a long way to go.

Dick Morris: Prepare for Sarah Palin versus Hillary Clinton in 2012

Sarah Palin is an "authentic model of feminism" and her vice-presidential candidacy "could well" lead to an historic all-female White House race in 2012 against Hillary Clinton, according to a former senior adviser to President Bill Clinton.

Dick Morris, who was a top aide to Bill Clinton from 1994 to 1996 and has since become a harsh critic of the former president and his wife, said that a John McCain victory in November would make the two women the front-runners for 2012.

"McCain will be 76 in 2012," he said. "I wonder if he'll even run for re-election. And Obama has put Joe Biden on the ticket this time. It's very hard to imagine Biden [who would be 69] running in 2012 with any chance of success, particularly after being drowned out by Palin like he is now.

"So I think that Hillary would have as easy a shot at the Democratic nomination as she did this time - but she blew it this time. You can't take these things to the bank."

The 2008 US presidential election could force a realignment of how women vote, Mr Morris said.

"In Palin, you have an authentic model of feminism and in Hillary you have a counterfeit one.

"Even Hillary's best friends agree that Hillary would not have been where she is if her husband had not been president. Palin's worst enemies concede that Palin would be where she is no matter what her husband does."

Mrs Palin is poised to attract significant numbers of Hillary Clinton supporters, he suggested. "There are three kinds of Hillary voters.

"First are the early supporters who are dedicated feminists and liberals who followed Hillary for decades and love her. They will almost all vote for Obama

"Your next group are racists who voted for Hillary because she was running against a black guy. And Obama's still black so they're going to vote for McCain.

"Then your third group are kind of impulse voters, more women than men, who realised that there's a woman running and gee it would be nice to have a woman as president. They're not dedicated pro-life, not dedicated feminists. Those women could well be drawn over by McCain-Palin."

Bill and Hillary Clinton, he argued, are determined to avenge her defeat in the Democratic primaries by allowing Mr Obama to lose in November.

"They desperately want McCain to win so she can run in 2012.

"But at the same time they can't let the Democrat party base think they're being anything less than aggressive in campaigning for Obama.

"But fortunately for her, the more she campaigns for Obama, the more it becomes clear that she's not on the ticket as vice-presidential candidate, as she should be, and the more that hurts Obama."

It was notable that Mrs Clinton had not taken on Mrs Palin, he said. "Right now, the Clintons are just getting out of the way and letting Obama hurt himself with Sarah Palin," said Mr Morris, 59, now an author and Fox News commentator.

"You have to ask why Hillary was not in the forefront of the attacks on Palin. She's not about to damage her political capital with women by defending Obama for not picking her."

Both Clintons would campaign vigorously for Mr Obama in public, he predicted. "But their hearts won't be in it and Bill will send signals to that effect in offhand comments he'll drop that won't be helpful."

By choosing Mrs Palin as his running mate, Mr McCain had burst the balloon of wild enthusiasm for Mr Obama.

"When you deal with charisma, it's kind of like love. You can only really be in love with one person at a time. And Palin pulled the spotlight off Obama."

Mrs Palin, he predicted, would appeal to the "single moms" who could be the key voting bloc in 2008, just as "soccer moms" were in 1996 and "security moms" in 2004. "About 27 per cent of the national vote is unmarried women and they're a core constituency of the Democratic party.

"Democrats have to carry them by four or five to one in order to win.

"The Republicans have made inroads among them with Palin's selection and with the Democrat attacks on her," he said, making Mrs Palin an "existential threat" to Mr Obama.

A 2012 general election between Mrs Palin and Mrs Clinton was a distinct possibility, he concluded. "It could well be."

Remember The Park That Was Completely Fenced In With No Access?

Obviously Salisbury News embarrassed them enough to go out there and simply remove a section of fence to allow PEOPLE and Lawn Mowing Equipment in to enjoy and or care for the Park. Dee, Dee, Deeee!

City Workers Hit Pedestrian Using Cross Walk

"Hello,

I would first like to start by saying how much I enjoy your blog and how I can tell how dedicated you are to your job. Thank You for that.

I am a senior at Salisbury University and a life-long native of Salisbury. I would like to give a 'Notice' to all pedestrians and/or college students around the camden/campus area. For as long as I have lived in Salisbury, being able to walk around the streets of Salisbury has been something I have cherrished. Yea, we can all get in our cars and drive but walking around downtown Salisbury or around the campus is something that I see as a blessing to Salisbury since we can simply walk around our town and see just how beautiful our city is (I am mostly talking about the camden/campus area). Well, the point of this email is to notify all pedestrians that you are NOT safe. While walking along the crosswalk from campus on Smith St. and College Ave. I was abrubtly put to a halt when all of a sudden a huge City truck slammed on its breaks not to hit me. And stopped a mere 2-3 feet from me. You may ask your self...has this student walked in front of a moving vehicle?...NO. This student used the crosswalk like we are supposed to do and are urged to do just so things like this (or worse) do not happen. This truck wasn't even driving either way on the street. It was turing from Smith onto College ave going towards Rt. 13. At this specific moment, there were not cars driving on either direction of the road, simply a stopped City truck with 2 city workers inside. And if you think I am just irritated because my life was almost taken from me it gets worse. Not only is both windows of the vehicle down, neither city worker even breathes a word of 'i'm sorry'. They simply put on a sly grin as I began to get frustrated. I mean, how are we as citizens of Salisbury supposed to feel safe in our own city with care-less people working for our city or even getting employed by the city. I will be graduating this December and consider myself a VERY well educated woman. And having CITY workers who obviously do not care a bout the city working for us is unacceptable. Not a smart move! The second after this incident occured I just looked at the driver with his sly grin on his face. Waiting for him to say at least "I'm sorry." I finally had to say something myself to this worker. I believe I said something along the lines of, " What are you doing? Because I know what I'm doing. I'm using the crosswalk like I am SUPPOSED TO! What the hell are you doing?" And still no response. I would just like to tell ALL pedestrians, and students to look both ways, even if you are walking in a cross walk. We know to use the cross-walks, and have known to use them. Now its time for the rest of the city to follow the standards too.

Thank you,

Salisbury Senior"
